Anderson Cooper takes on 'The Slammer'

Isaac Cornetti, the owner of Raleigh's "The Slammer" newspaper, will get grilled by Anderson Cooper on tomorrow afternoon's episode of "Anderson."

The Slammer is a tabloid that publishes mugshots of people arrested in several areas of North Carolina and in six other states.

The topic of the episode is making money off of murder and about public shaming. Anderson asks Cornetti if he's doing the community a service or if the practice ruins people's lives. (Full disclosure: The News & Observer also publishes mugshots online here.)

"Anderson" airs at 2 p.m. on Fox 50.

CNN's 'Heroes' tribute tonight

CNN received more than 10,000 nominations from over 100 countries for this year's 2010 Hero of the Year award.

A panel of judges (which included Muhammad Ali, Richard Branson, and Yo Yo Ma) whittled that list down to ten, and on Thanksgiving night, the network will celebrate those nominees and unveil their fourth Hero of the Year.

"CNN Heroes" is hosted by Anderson Cooper and seeks to illustrate the best of humanity through stories of selfless acts of kindness, courage and perseverance. The tribute show features performances by Bon Jovi and John Legend, and appearances by Demi Moore, Halle Berry, Aaron Eckhart, Gerard Butler, Renee Zellweger, Jessica Alba, Marisa Tomei, Keifer Sutherland, Kid Rock, LL Cool J, Holly Robinson Peete, and Sugarland.

The rescued Chilean miners will also be saluted at this year's show.

We had a local guy in the running last year, but no locals in this year's list.

Anderson Cooper interviews Chilean miners, rescuers

CNN has a "worldwide exclusive" tonight when Anderson Cooper sits down to interview some of the Chilean miners who were trapped in a mine for 69 days.

The miner interview, part of the "CNN Heroes" special (airing Thanksgiving night), runs tonight on "Anderson Cooper 360." Cooper will also interview some of the rescuers. Here's a video preview of the segment.

"Anderson Cooper 360" airs at 10pm on CNN.

Will Anderson Cooper be the next Oprah?

The New York Times is reporting that Anderson Cooper has signed a deal for a daytime talk show to run in syndication on local stations next year.

Cooper is the host of "Anderson Cooper 360" on CNN, a serious news program that runs weeknights at 10pm, and he'll stay on there. Cooper's new daytime venture is described as a light-hearted show focused on current events and pop culture, and could be a good fit for stations looking to fill next year's Oprah void.

Cooper regularly fills in for Regis Philbin on "Live with Regis and Kelly," and he's actually very funny on the show. He has great chemistry with Kelly Ripa, but there's no indication that he'll have any type of co-host or sidekick on his new show.

"Hope for Haiti" airs on most networks tonight

George Clooney, Anderson Cooper, and Wyclef Jean host tonight's telethon benefit for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Expect musical performances by Bono, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Shakira, Sting, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Keith Urban, Kid Rock, Christina Aguilera, and others.

Clooney hosts from Los Angeles, Jean from New York City, Cooper from Haiti, and "Twilight" actor Robert Pattinson will host from London.

Some of the stars scheduled to man the phones include Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Leonard DiCaprio, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Bradley Cooper, Renée Zellweger, Courteney Cox, Colin Farrell, Gabby Sidibe and Emily Blunt.

What to Watch on Thursday: Let TV bring the party to you

Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest (10pm, ABC) - Dick Clark is essentially Mr. New Year's Eve, but Ryan Seacrest will pull most of the weight hosting their joint project. Fergie, Jennifer Lopez, and Daughtry are among the entertainers scheduled to perform.

New Year's Eve with Carson Daly (10pm, NBC) - Look for Green Day, Rihanna, and Jay-Z.

Billboard's New Year's Eve Live (11pm, Fox) - Carmen Electra hosts Kris Allen, Allison Iraheta, and Sean Kingston. I'm sorry, but yawn.

WRAL News First Night Raleigh (11pm, WRAL) - WRAL will have special coverage from Downtown Raleigh's First Night, so tune in here if you want to see the Acorn drop.

New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin (11pm, CNN) - And bingo, we have a winner. For the thrill of pure unpredictability, this is the show to watch tonight. What's more fun than watching entertainment's biggest loudmouth completely mortify CNN's golden boy? And because of her previous New Year's on-air episode, Griffin told Craig Ferguson last week that CNN made her sign a contract in which she promised that if she uses profanity again, she has to write the check back to them. She says it wasn't that big of a check, so ...

A rally at NCSU for North Carolina's own CNN Hero

CNN is hosting a celebratory rally in Raleigh tomorrow at noon for Doc Hendley, who has been named one of the network's Top 10 Heroes of the year. (Read N&O profile of Hendley here).

The 30-year-old Blowing Rock bartender, who works to bring clean drinking water to people in need, was chosen from over 9,000 entries by a panel which included notables such as Gen. Colin Powell, Sir Elton John, and Ted Turner.

Hendley is eligible to win the #1 "Hero of the Year" spot through voting going on now. Hendley has already been awarded $25,000 and could win $100,000 if he's chosen as "Hero of the Year." You can vote until November 18. The winner will be announced on November 26.
