Scotty goes back to 'Idol' for its last shows of the season

Scotty McCreery is heading back to the show that made him famous this week as "American Idol" crowns its newest winner.

Scotty, the Garner High School student who won Season 10 of the popular singing show a year ago, will perform on Tuesday night's show and then be on hand for the blowout "Idol" finale on Wednesday night.

On that show, either Phillip Phillips of Leesburg, Ga., or Jessica Sanchez of San Diego will be named the winner of Season 11. (Even without hearing their final songs, we'd bet the ranch on Phillip.)

Clay Aiken mentioned in Taft murder trial

Well, this came from out of nowhere: Raleigh native Clay Aiken, a singer and Broadway actor who got his start on "American Idol," got a random name-check in yesterday's Kathy Taft murder trial.

Jason K. Williford, 32, is on trial for raping and murdering Taft in 2010, but apparently, Williford also had a sort of run-in with Aiken at some point in his past (both Aiken and Williford attended Leesville Road High School at about the same time in Raleigh, but it's unclear when the following incident took place or if the two even knew each other).

According to the story by The N&O's Josh Shaffer, Williford's lawyer chronicled the man's lifelong pattern of drug abuse and bizarre behavior:

What to Watch on Wednesday: A departure in 'Criminal Minds' season finale

Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis (9pm, Bravo) - Jeff and Jenni provide a design makeover for comic Mark DeCarlo in the season 1 finale.

Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 (9:30pm, ABC) - James freaks out when a sex tape of him and Chloe is leaked to the public because he fears how it will affect his status on "Dancing with the Stars."

Law & Order: SVU (10pm, NBC) - Police dive into an underground world of self-mutiliation and ritual amputation while searching for a missing woman.

Clay Aiken discusses gay marriage on 'Face the Nation'

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing Clay Aiken is the first "American Idol" contestant to appear as a guest on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Clay, who is also a finalist on the current season of "The Celebrity Apprentice," was in-studio this morning on the Sunday morning news issues program to discuss gay marriage and the passing of North Carolina's constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Host Bob Schieffer identified Clay as "American Idol singer and activist," and his first question to Clay was if he believed President Obama's recent statement supporting gay marriage "pretty much ensures" that he's going to lose North Carolina in the presidential election.

Clay Aiken Q&A: 'American Idol' star could win 'Celebrity Apprentice'

Raleigh native and current Durham resident Clay Aiken, a runner-up on the second season of "American Idol," is currently a favorite (at least by the way I call it!) to win the top spot in this season's "Celebrity Apprentice" show on NBC.

Clay's time on the show has served him -- and his charity -- well (he is playing to earn money for The National Inclusion Project, a charity he helped form). Viewers this season have discovered that Clay is pretty proficient at a lot of things besides singing and acting. For many of the tasks he and his teammates have been charged with, Clay has written, produced, directed, managed and designed. And he wowed us during one project with his puppetry skills -- skills he said he learned attending Vacation Bible School while growing up in Raleigh.

Earlier this week I got a chance to talk to Clay by phone about his experiences on the show. The interview is below. "Celebrity Apprentice" airs this Sunday night at 9 on NBC, and the season finale will air next Sunday at 9.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Sally Draper drops in on 'Apartment 23'

Nova: Secrets of the Sun (9pm, UNC-TV) - Examining the sun, which is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit at its core. Included, spacecraft- and Earth-based telescopes that enable scientists to glean information about how the sun works.

Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 (9:30pm, ABC) - June lands a demanding internship on top of her job, and then must clean up a mess from one of Chloe's half-baked ideas. Meanwhile, James Van Der Beek is thrilled to be cast in a body-switching film opposite Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sally Draper on "Mad Men."

Revenge (10pm, ABC) - Emily uncovers the identity of her father's killer. Also, while Declan testifies in court, jeopardizing his romance with a fragile Charlotte.

Law & Order: SVU (10pm, NBC) - A reporter and a vigilante group criticize the police for not finding a rapist on the loose in West SoHo, and the detectives keep hitting dead ends until one of the vigilante members is assaulted.

Another awards show, another nomination for Scotty

It’s becoming a bit old hat for Scotty McCreery — another country music association announces award nominees, and the Garner High School student is a contender.

On Monday, CMT announced that Scotty’s music video for “The Trouble With Girls” has been nominated for “Breakthrough Video of the Year” at this year’s CMT Music Awards, to air on June 6 on the country music cable channel.

Fans can go online to vote for Scotty at www.cmt.com through June 4. Carrie Underwood – like Scotty, a former “American Idol” winner – leads the nominations with five.

Scotty’s fellow nominees in the breakthrough category have all competed against him before – Lauren Alaina, who has runner-up when Scotty won the 10th season of “Idol” a year ago; Brantley Gilbert and Hunter Hayes, both of whom were nominated against Scotty for Best New Artist at the Academy of Country Music Awards earlier this month; and Pistol Annies and Thompson Square, both of whom were nominated against Scotty for Top New Artist in December’s American Country Awards.
