Fantasia keeps on keepin' on

"American Idol" winners tend to wind up everywhere, or nowhere. At the pinnacle, you have Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, who probably would have had substantial careers even if they'd never been on the show. And down at the bottom are past winners like Lee DeWyze and Kris Allen, who are showing little sign of staying power beyond their moment of "American Idol" glory.

Another winner will be crowned on May 16, and it's too early to say which end of that continuum that Garner homeboy/season 10 winner Scotty McCreery will wind up at. If he's lucky, he'll come to rest in a middle ground somewhere in the neighborhood of season three winner Fantasia, who still has a surprisingly healthy commercial career nine years after winning "American Idol." The High Point native is on her fourth album, "Side Effects of You," which just became her second straight album to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart. It also ties her best showing on the main Billboard 200 album list, debuting at No. 2.

Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino return to 'American Idol'

North Carolina is getting plenty of exposure on "American Idol" this season.

2011 winner Scotty McCreery performed on "Idol" last week, and the show welcomes back 2003 runner-up Clay Aiken (left) and 2004 winner Fantasia Barrino tomorrow night.

Both Barrino and Aiken are scheduled to perform. Barrino has a new single out called "Lose to Win."

"American Idol" airs on Fox at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

What to Watch on Thursday: McCreery sings on 'Idol,' more tragedy on 'Glee'

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - The six finalists perform songs they wish they had written, and 2011 "Idol" winner Scotty McCreery performs his new single, "See You Tonight."

The Office (9pm, NBC) - Dwight coerces Stanley to make a crucial sales call, while Nellie and Toby help Pam and Jim with their marital challenges. Roseanne Barr guest stars.

Glee (9pm, Fox) - As the glee club prepare for Regionals, an unthinkable event puts things into perspective. (I'm worried about Brittany's cat, Lord Tubbington, seen at left. Which means even if I still watched this show, I wouldn't be watching tonight!) Also, a former "Glee" character makes a surprise cameo appearance.

Archer (10pm, FX) - In the Season 4 finale, Archer infiltrates an underwater laboratory.

Hannibal (10pm, NBC) - Will teams up with Jack to hunt down a killer who buries his victims alive in order to grow mushrooms. Meanwhile, Hannibal begins to gain Will's trust during therapy sessions. "Scandal" and "Elementary" are both reruns tonight, so watch!

The Moment (10pm, USA) - In this new reality series, "average Joes" (and we're assuming, Josephines) try out their dream careers to decide if they should pursue the job for the long term or return to their regular careers. Tonight, an amateur photographer interviews for a job with Sports Illustrated.

Tabatha Takes Over (10pm, Bravo) - Tabatha attempts to retool an outdated nightclub in Riverside, Cal., only to discover that the three owners are stubborn and the staff is indifferent.

Legit (10:30pm, FX) - The first season ends with a prostitute clamming to be pregnant with Billy's baby.

The House I Live In (2am, UNC-TV) - Set your DVRs tonight for the winner of the 2012 Grand Jury Prize from the Sundance Film Festival: Eugene Jarecki's documentary about the failure of America's war on drugs.

Scotty McCreery returns to 'Idol' to perform new single

With his new single released to radio and iTunes this week, Scotty McCreery will return to the show that made him famous to perform the song Thursday night.

McCreery, the Garner native who won the 10th season of "American Idol," will sing "See You Tonight" on the results show, which airs at 8 p.m. Thursday on Fox.

McCreery wrote the song with Ashley Gorley and Zach Crowell. It ranked 47th on the iTunes singles charts Wednesday. It's one of several songs on his upcoming album that he played a part in writing.

Albemarle native Kellie Pickler will compete on 'Dancing with the Stars'

ABC announced this morning that Albemarle native and country music star Kellie Pickler will compete on the new season of "Dancing with the Stars."

26-year-old Pickler, who finished sixth in the fifth season of "American Idol," is partnered with the show's most successful dance partner -- Derek Hough. Hough has won the coveted mirror ball trophy three times.

After "American Idol," Pickler's debut album "Small Town Girl" was certified gold, selling more than 800,000 copies. Pickler released a second album in 2008, "Kellie Pickler," and her 2012 album "100 Proof" was picked as one of the year's top albums by both the Washington Post and Rolling Stone magazine. Pickler married songwriter Kyle Jacobs in January 2011.

The new season of "Dancing with the Stars" debuts on March 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

You can follow Pickler on Twitter at @KelliePickler

Here are the other stars signed up for the new season (I've actually heard of most of these people!).

1976 Olympic gold medalist ice skater Dorothy Hamill (with Tristan Macmanus)
Actor and comedian D.L. Hughley (with Cheryl Burke)
Actor and comedian Andy Dick (with Sharna Burgess)
Baltimore Ravens football player Jacoby Jones (with Karina Smirnoff)
Country music star Wynonna Judd (with Tony Dovolani)
Reality show star Lisa Vanderplump (with Gleb Savchenko)
Welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz (with Lindsay Arnold)
U.S. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman (with Mark Ballas)
Soap opera actor Ingo Rademacher (with Kim Johnson)
Disney actress and singer Zendaya Coleman (with Val Chmerkovskiy)

So much for those N.C. 'Idol' contenders this year

North Carolina residents hoping for the next Scotty McCreery, Fantasia Barrino or Clay Aiken on this season of "American Idol" are likely disappointed with the show's Top 20 males and Top 20 females.

Two Tar Heel residents were sent packing before the final cut to the Top 40, which was shown Thursday night.

Particularly surprising was the elimination of Kez Ban, right, a 27-year-old street musician and fire performer from Durham. Kez Ban had received a lot of airtime earlier this season because she was like no one else — a quirky troubadour wearing boots wrapped in crime-scene tape. But her unique voice blew the judges away.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Cat fights and McCreery on 'American Idol'

Big Rich Atlanta (8pm, Style) - Another reality show set in Atlanta. Adrienne has the details.

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - Footage from the Charlotte (well, Concord) auditions is on tap tonight, and so is a bit of the nasty fighting between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey that we've been hearing about for months now. The North Carolina audition, which took place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, is where the two judges had their infamous, profanity-laced spat. Also, even more importantly, Garner's own Scotty McCreery, the 2011 "American Idol" winner, stops by the auditions to wish the young singers luck. If you're going to watch one "Idol" this season, this is the one.

Nature: Attenborough's Life Stories - Life on Camera (8pm, UNC-TV) - In part one of a three-part "Nature" special, wildlife filmmaker David Attenborough revisits key places and events from his 60-year career. He also reflects on how technological breakthroughs have increased the understanding of the natural world, including advancements in underwater photography, the invention of infrared films, remote control cameras, time-lapse photography and digital slow-motion cameras.

Kimora: House of Fab (9pm, Style) - In this new series, Kimora Lee Simmons becomes president and creative director of the online fashion company JustFab. Adrienne reviews.

Suburgatory (9:30pm, ABC) - George needs some space when Dallas is overenthusiastic about his business, so he persuades Noah and Fred to start a band just for guys, but George breaks his own rule after he hears Sheila sing.

American Horror Story (10pm, FX) - In the season finale, Johnny (Bloody Face Jr.) aims to complete his father's work by murdering his mother. Meanwhile, Lana attempts to shut down Briarcliff.

Necessary Roughness (10pm, USA) - The second half of the season starts with Dani seeing a therapist (Peter MacNicol) in order to get her own career back on track. Also, TK returns to the Hawks but finds that another player has taken his position.

A unique Durham presence on "American Idol"

"American Idol" doesn't air its North Carolina auditions episode until next week. But an unusual performer from Durham was featured on Thursday night's show, which was devoted to auditions from Chicago last year.

Kez Ban, a 27-year-old street musician who says she also sometimes performs with fire, doesn't look anything like your typical "Idol" auditioner. With her jaunty hat and a boot wrapped with crime scene tape, Kez Ban, right, seems like the kind of quirky cannon fodder we often see on the auditions. Somebody who sings terribly and gets giggles and pained faces from the judges.

But when the Durham resident sings, we're all in for a surprise. Kez Ban is actually pretty good! She sings "I've Got No Strings" (yes, from "Pinocchio") first. Then she asks if she can play her guitar and perform one of her original compositions. The song, "Wandering," is nice. And it certainly stands out amid some of the overwrought ballads or screechy rock anthems that other hopefuls audition with.
