"Steel Magnolias": Black or white, it's good all over

It's one of those movies that people watch over and over, laughing in the same places, and despite knowing the ending, crying with the same abandon. So a remake faces some scrutiny, and perhaps, some skepticism.

But it's OK.  With a strong cast led by Queen Latifah and few tweaks to the story, the new "Steel Magnolias" (9 p.m., Sunday Lifetime) retains its mix of humor and tragedy. You'll still laugh and you'll still need the Kleenex nearby.

The rhythm's off a bit on the "Memphis Beat"

Sometimes watching a TV show about the South when you're living in the South can be a burden. Even a Northern transplant like me gets bugged by a labored Southern accent, gets hung up on whether the location is actually the South  or not, and recognizes when the quirkiness (there's always quirkiness) gets a little too thick.

All of that went through my mind as I watched "Memphis Beat" (TNT, 10 p.m. Tuesdays), a promising, but unfocused series about a quirky (see I told you) Memphis detective who loves his city and his Elvis.

"Three Rivers: Become an organ donor

It's pretty clear that's the message behind CBS's new show "Three Rivers," premiering tonight at 9.

The network has even partnered with Donate Life America to raise awareness; you soon might see a lot of lime green rubber bracelets.

So if you're planning to selfishly covet some perfectly good innards should you die, and you're fine with that position, you probably shouldn't watch this.
