At NCCU, the Rivera House wins a reprieve

The battle over the aged Rivera House near the N.C. Central campus continues.

Durham's Historic Preservation Commission denied this morning the university's request to tear it down.

NCCU will appeal.

Stay tuned.

Rivera House gets reprieve

The Alex Rivera house on Fayetteville Street won a reprieve from demolition Tuesday morning, but its future remains insecure.

Durham’s Historic Preservation Commission unanimously denied a request by N.C. Central University for permission to tear down the run-down residence to make way for campus expansion. But NCCU vice-chancellor Zack Abegunrin said the university will appeal the denial “as soon as possible.”

Rivera House teardown on Tuesday agenda

In April, the state of North Carolina declared the 96-year-old house at Fayetteville and Lawson streets to hold “statewide historic significance.”

Next week, N.C. Central University is going to see about tearing it down.
