Wednesday deals (May 23-29)

Memorial Day weekend is coming up and the supermarkets have some really nice bargains on all the fixings for backyard picnics. There are deals on ground beef, chicken, produce, paper goods, soda and ice cream.

At Harris Teeter, I especially like the Steamfresh veggies for 19 cents, split chicken breasts for 99 cents per pound and the Breyer's ice cream for $1.
At Lowes Foods, there's free Kraft barbecue sauce and Country Time lemonade or Kool-Aid mix, 20-cent Milky Way candy bars and Sun Drop soda for 25 cents -- all with a little coupon magic.
At Food Lion, be sure to take note of the 20-cent ears of sweet corn and green peppers for 69 cents each.
And finally, Aldi has lots of produce deals, including cantaloupe for just 99 cents each.

For easier price comparisons, I've added the Kroger deals from Sunday to the bottom of the list along with a few new Kroger deals from a new 4-day sale that begins Friday and runs through Monday. Most noteworthy: ground beef for $1.79 per pound and cherries for $3.99 per pound.

Keep reading for all the deals and coupon match-ups. And feel free to add the deals you spot as you're shopping this week.

The big grocery store news this week, of course, is Triples at Harris Teeter. Check my separate Triples post to read my incredibly long list of good deals, including more than a dozen freebies and more than 30 other items under $1.

Beyond Triples, you can score some nice produce deals at Lowes Foods, Food Lion and Aldi this week. Food Lion also has a great deal on whole chicken fryers for just 79 cents a pound. With the help of coupons, Lowes Foods has a great deal on Pepsi 12 packs and Lance Crackers.

For easier price comparisons, I've also added the Kroger deals from Sunday to the bottom of the list.

Wednesday deals (May 2-8)

It's Cinco de Mayo this Saturday so the grocery stores are loaded with sales on everything to throw a party. There are deals on chips and salsa, grilling meats, taco kits, tortillas and black beans -- just to name a few.

You can score FREE Grande tortilla chips with a coupon at Lowes Foods, Mission tortillas for $1 after coupon at Harris Teeter, and tons of great produce deals at Aldi, Lowes Foods and Food Lion.

And if you need soft drinks for your weekend get-togethers, Lowes Foods also has a stellar deal on Pepsi products.

Who says throwing a party has to be expensive?

Wednesday deals (April 25 - May 1)

It's a BOGO kind of week at Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods now through May 1.

Dozens of items are on sale Buy One, Get One Free at both supermarkets, giving you the opportunity to score some nice deals. Even Lowes Foods' Fresh Rewards e-offer is a BOGO giving you the chance to pick up laundry detergent for just $1.50 per jug.

Harris Teeter also has several Buy 2, Get 3 Free deals, including offers on six-packs of Coke, shredded cheese, Mayfield ice cream and Ragu pasta sauce. The 8-oz. shredded cheese, for instance, will only cost you $1.10 per package when you buy five.

At Food Lion, be sure to check out the chicken and ground chuck prices and some nice produce deals.

And, of course, Aldi continues to have outstanding prices on produce. This week, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries and Gala apples are especially good buys.

Deal alert: Cheap milk this week

Need milk?

It's cheap this week at two grocery stores in the Triangle.

Wednesday deals (April 18-24)

Dueling Super Double coupon events dominate the grocery deals this week. Both Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods are offering special one-week promotions that double the value of coupons up to $1.98 in face value.

Beyond Super Doubles, it's a light week for deals, though there are a few bargains worth an extra trip to the store.

Among the deals that caught my eye:

  • Milk for $2.69 per gallon at Aldi!
  • Store-brand bacon for $1.79 at Lowes Foods.
  • Store-brand ice cream BOGO at Harris Teeter.
  • 80% lean ground beef for $2.49 a pound at Harris Teeter.
  • Split chicken breasts for 99 cents a pound at Lowes Foods.
  • Deli turkey breast for $3.99 a pound at Food Lion.
  • Sweet corn for 19 cents an ear at Kroger.

Wednesday deals (April 11-17)

Harris Teeter has multiple e-vic specials this week and some of them turn out to be pretty spectacular deals when you combine them with coupons. Kellogg's Raisin Bran for 72 cents a box, Yoplait Yogurt for 34 cents a cup and Maxwell House coffee for $1.57 are all worth a trip to HT.
At Lowes Foods, shoppers have the opportunity to shave a little money off at the gas pump when they buy select groceries. That deal is good for one week only. There are also a couple good deals using the new sheet of in-store coupons, including Jell-O for just 9 cents a box.
Food Lion has several good buys on produce, especially the red grapes for just 95 cents per pound.
And the fantastic deals on produce continue at Aldi, with $1 pineapple and cantaloupe, strawberries for 99 cents per pound and Anjou pears 99 cents for two pounds!

Deal alert: More cheap milk this week

Need milk?

You're in luck.

Kroger has milk on sale through Saturday for $2.88 per gallon -- the latest in a string of milk deals in the Triangle.

It's not quite as good as the milk deal at Aldi, where a gallon is just $2.69 through Tuesday.

But anytime you can score a gallon for under $3, you've gotten a good deal.

The best (and worst) supermarkets, according to Consumer Reports

As I posted earlier this week, Harris Teeter ranked among the Top 10 supermarkets nationwide in a just-released survey by Consumer Reports.

Here are a few more details, along with the rankings of other stores that do business in the Triangle.

Can you guess which Triangle supermarkets were in the very bottom of the rankings?

Deal alert: Cheap milk this week

With milk prices hovering near $4 a gallon, I can't help but get excited about a good deal on something most families buy every week.
