UNC spring football game: What we learned

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina held its annual Blue vs. White spring football scrimmage at Kenan Stadium on Saturday. In case you missed the story that ran in the paper about this yesterday, you can read it right here. The Blue team defeated the White, 44-7. Well, actually, the final scoreboard read 44-21 – but that includes 14 points that the White team received at halftime to make the game a bit more competitive.

Of course, the final score of a spring scrimmage doesn’t mean much. And it’s difficult to read too much into the Tar Heels’ spring game, anyway, because it was, you have to remember, UNC’s 14th practice in the completely new, completely different offensive and defensive system that first-year coach Larry Fedora and his assistants are installing. A lot will change between now and September.

Even so, the spring game provided us some insight and some lessons. Here are some of them:

Season over for UNC's Womble and Blue

UNC running backs A.J. Blue and Jamal Womble will both miss the rest of the season.

Blue, a freshman, tore the three main ligaments in his left knee against Georgia Southern on Oct. 10 and had it surgically repaired on Friday at UNC Hospitals. He will also miss spring practice. Blue, who was used as a "Wildcat" quarterback, had 33 rushing yards and 24 passing yards in six games.

Surgery for UNC's Blue, Womble

UNC running backs A.J. Blue and Jamal Womble are both scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday after suffering injuries in the Tar Heels' 42-12 win over Georgia Southern.

Blue, a freshman who has been used mainly as a "Wildcat" quarterback, injured his left knee in the fourth quarter. Womble, a reserve running back, fractured his right wrist covering the opening kickoff.

Sorting UNC's depth chart

UNC released its two-deep chart for Saturday's opener against The Citadel (6 p.m.). There were few surprises but among the highlights:

• Sophomore Zach Brown will get the starting nod at weakside linebacker over freshman Kevin Reddick. Brown, the hero of timing day with a 4.28 in the 40, played primarily on special teams last season.
