Reeling Cavaliers looking to Evans

GREENSBORO -- If Virginia wasn’t already struggling with the suspension of leading scorer Sylven Landesberg and the nine-game losing streak the Cavaliers bring into the tournament, they will also be without senior guard Calvin Baker, who has left the team to deal with an illness in his family.

At 14-15, the Cavaliers could still squeeze their way into one of the postseason tournaments, but it’s going to take a win over Boston College on Thursday at the minimum. And to do that, Virginia is going to need a big game from freshman point guard Jontel Evans.

ACC Tournament downsized in 2012

GREENSBORO -- The ACC Tournament set attendance records in its last two visits to Atlanta, but at the occasional expense of early round atmosphere in the cavernous spaces of the Georgia Dome.

Sunday, the ACC announced that in the tournament's next trip to Atlanta, in 2012, the event will be held at Philips Arena, where the NBA Hawks and NHL Thrashers play, instead of the Georgia Dome.

A day at the ACC

The ACC Baseball Championships returned to Durham Bulls Athletic Park this week, bringing some of the best college baseball teams in the country to the DBAP. And they did not disappoint on Wednesday, the opening day of the five-day event.

In the day's first game, matching fourth-seeded Georgia Tech and fifth-seeded Miami, Hurricanes coach Jim Morris gambled by holding back his top starters -- and came up a big winner.

Using five pitchers, Morris and the Canes defeated Tech ace Deck McGuire, the pitcher of the year in the ACC who came in with a 10-0 record.

First half thoughts

Anyone who thought the key to the ACC title game would be Brian Zoubek, raise your hand.

With Duke showing no answer for Solomon Alabi inside early, Zoubek came off the bench to neutralize the Florida State center as Duke took a 14-point halftime lead, 35-21.

Seven up for ACC

North Carolina. Duke. Wake Forest. Florida State. Clemson. Boston College. Maryland.

That's seven — again.

The ACC only had four teams in the NCAA Tournament last year, a year after tying a record-high with seven, but it looks like the league will get seven bids tonight.

Duke's task: Douglas

Facing Florida State's big men isn't the big challenge for Duke tomorrow. The Devils have plenty of practice facing bigger, stronger opponents. There's nothing new about that.

The real challenge for the Devils may be slowing down Toney Douglas, the Florida State guard who has gone for 25 and 27 points in the Seminoles' two wins here in Atlanta.

Two minutes in the balance

North Carolina coach Roy Williams was concerned about a few foul calls (or no-calls) that went against the Tar Heels late in their 73-70 loss to Florida State, but the Heels never should have been in that position.

The Heels didn’t lose the game in the final two minutes of the second half. They lost it in the final two minutes of the first half.

How quickly things change

From the bench to the starting lineup to the end of the bench: Greg Paulus' strange senior season.

Seminoles expect different challenge

If there are any bad feelings lingering in Tallahassee from the buzzer-beater Ty Lawson hit to beat Florida State in January, Toney Douglas wasn’t saying.

But there’s no question the North Carolina team that the Seminoles will face today in the semifinals is a different animal than it was that night.
