ST. PAUL, Minn.
-- Cal Clutterbuck's goal with 3:05 left in overtime gave the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 victory Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Clutterbuck, returning to the lineup from an ankle injury, was sprawled on the ice in the slot. But he reached out his stick to sweep the puck past Cam Ward and keep the Hurricanes winless on the road this season.

Clutterbuck scored after Greg Zanon's shot hit the post and ricocheted toward him, hitting him in ther face. He dove for the puck with defenseman Nic Wallin beside him.

The Canes appeared victory-bound with three minutes left in the third on a rush into the Wild zone. Matt Cullen flipped a backhander at what looked to be an open net, only to have goaltender Niklas Backstrom make the stop.

With 1:39 left in the third, defenseman Joni Pitkanen was called for roughing Clutterbuck on a big hit along the boards. But Backstrom again had to save the Wild, stoning Eric Staal on a short-handed breakaway with 46 seconds to play.

Joni Pitkanen's first goal of the season gave the Canes a 2-2 tie after the second period.

Pitkanen first forced a turnover, then led the rush. He passed to Ray Whitney on the right wing, and Whitney fed Pitkanen for the 2-on-1 score at 7:35. Whitney also assisted on the Canes' first score, a power-play goal by Sergei Samsonov in the first.

Kyle Brodziak's goal early in the second period gave the Wild a 2-1 lead. Brodziak was in the right place at the right time, taking a pass on the right wing. He went unchecked on Cam Ward and scoring on a backhander at 1:51.

Rod Brind'Amour had a chance to tie the score on a short-handed breakaway after a hooking call on Stephane Yelle, but Niklas Backstrom made the stop at 6:17 of the second. Late in the second, Backstrom snared a shot by Scott Walker on a breakaway.

The Canes and Wild were tied 1-1 after a first period in which both teams had nine shots and scored on power plays.

The Canes took a 1-0 lead as Samsonov scored his first goal of the season, striking at 10:32 of the first. But the lead was short-lived.

Andrew Brunette tied the score at 12:52 with a bad-angle, short-side shot that beat Cam Ward low at the post. The 4-on-3 score came after Aaron Ward was called for high-sticking. Tim Conboy and the Wild's Scott both went in the box 50 seconds before Ward's penalty.

The Canes set up their power play well, with Eric Staal making a point-to-point pass to Joni Pitkanen, who passed to Ray Whitney to the left of the goal. Samsonov, open on the backdoor, had a tap-in on Whitney's pass through the crease. ...

Conboy, a local boy, and Scott went at it later in the first. Scott is 6-8 and 258 pounds and got the better of the fight, although Conboy gamely hung in until the bitter end. ...

Brandon Sutter made it in plenty of time. Sutter is centering the third line with Sergei Samsonov and Jussi Jokinen on the wings. ...

The other lines remain the same as for the Avs game, with Rod Brind'Amour on Matt Cullen's line. ...

Defensively, it's Joe Corvo-Nic Wallin, Aaron Ward-Joni Pitkanen, Andrew Alberts-Jay Harrison. ...

Specific Steps

1. Healthy scratch Wallin, unless the Hurricanes want to remain winless on the road for the entire season;

2. Healthy scratch Yelle and play Sutter until Yelle gets the concept in his brain that non-aggressive penalties (i.e. hooking) are not acceptable

too many stupid penalties

Someone needs to tell them to stop taking stupid penalties. It is just getting ridiculous. If they don't listen, bench them.

A battle of ...

the net minders!!! while and yet again the canes lost what was a winable game, as in it should never had made it to overtime type of thinking, but this loss was if i dare say a good one from the fan standpoint that the very same thing could have happened at the other end..whilke it was a fluke and like the Juice's goal last season with milli econds left on the clock...the sweeping the puck into the net was one of those plays of the week for the reason of this season...Brandon came in and yes he was good...but this year the young man was playing like seasoned pro and was shooting at the net at will..it is too bad that there is no place for him on the bench at present time. His being there highlighted the efforts of Samsonov,LaRose,Wallin, and Corvo. Even Pitkanen played even better even though he gave up a couple of passes that lead to a couple of chances for the wild, seemed to skate through the Wild's lines ...but our undoing was again...the box...and our abilty to go for the most penalized team...while Conboy did well in motivating the canes...but back to back trips to the box for fighting the same guy...well unless the dummy called Conboy's mother a man or some really bad slur ...Tim should have advoided the second trip to the box...but that's just my opinion...the canes actually played better last night than the night before...but the canes are still on the losing end...again...sigh...and St. louis aint gonna roll over and let us win either ya know !!!

Go Canes !!! Please !!!

Call me when we win two in a row. Better yet, one.

yeah, then send me a text or something...i'll be watching whatever team's playing on VS.

It's getting painful to listen to Tripp trying to spin everything.  Conboy pretty much got his butt kicked, by the way.

whirligig

i understand your points..but Tripp always seems to be the " eternal optimist"...and yes Tim Conboy got his fanny whipped, but like a junk yard dawg...he didn't quit. But i will say again...One trip to the box should have been enough...but as a lot younger man...i was playing D on the right wing...and i had a guy try and get my goat and actually did call my mom a slut...yes, the guy was bigger than i was, and yes I went to the box...and was suspended for the rest of the season...as it was about half way through the season at that time..but after the guy got out of the hospital...and everytime he saw me on the street...he broke his neck running the other way...was it worth it ? No...but and whil;e the team i was on did win the next 3 games...but my presence was missed all because of a few words that wer not true.....In closing...Fighting does have a place in hockey...but the coaching staff must make sure that each player knows what is acceptable and what isn't...and in the case of the NHL, just because a player makes big bucks...doesn't take away his humanity and emotions...does it ?

have a safe week...and hopefully we can get St. Louis to sing them blues come Wednesday night !

Go Canes !!

Let Us Know

Love the Canes, and hope they will let us know when they realize that the hockey season has actually started and it is time to play!!
