Ward's injury has surreal feel to it

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's not good.

You could sense it by the somber looks on the faces, the tone of voice, the frowns around the Canes' locker room after Saturday's game. Cam Ward's leg injury against the Columbus Blue Jackets was serious -- certainly serious enough to shift a nightmarish season into the surreal.

Canes coach Paul Maurice called the injury "significant" and it is that. Ward suffered a laceration to the left leg when Rick Nash sprawled in front of the net and Nash's right skate appeared to nick Ward around the left knee area.

Maurice was almost ashen after the 3-2 loss to the Jackets. His voice almost broke when he was asked about Ward possibly being sidelined.

"That's going to be tough to take," he said. "But it's where we're at."

What now? The Canes may look to call up Justin Peters from the Albany River Rats (AHL) to back up Michael Leighton. Peters is 5-4-1 with a 2.19 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.

Ward's injury is similar to the one he suffered against the New York Rangers in March 2007. Rangers forward Brad Isbister cut Ward's knee with a skate, and Ward missed just three games.

Will it be that kind of injury again -- three games and back in the lineup? Or will it force the Hurricanes into a major decision on a goaltender?

Ward has said a personal goal this season was to be selected to Team Canada for the Vancouver Olympics. Only time will tell how much the injury damages his chances.

One other thing many fans

forgot is that teams like coyotes & blue jackets are in deep fiscal trouble. The canes may not be as bad off and those 2 teams are...and yes having several back to back winning seasons does help the bottom line..So and even when the Canes can't,don't or may not play up to what we know they can do, we must never forget that even in a poor economy accross the nation, we here in the carolinas aint too bad...not great...but not too bad...so and again, I would ask all who are able to go who do and are STH's...and who maybe getting fed up...just sit back, relax after all it is just a game...and just because we bought a tricket, doesn'y give us the right to try and dictate from any seat in the house...after all none of us can or are able to sign the checks for the team can we ? Be safe everyone...and let's see what question Chip will lay on us for Monday's debate...shall we ??

Go Canes !!

Be Patient

All you Canes fans need to be patient. Since the season is not going the way everyone hoped it would, everyone wants to fire Paul and have JR do something now to fix it. I give JR credit for coming out and admitting he is to blame for putting this team together and how they have played. How many other GM's would do that. It takes time to rebuild so be patient. With all the talent we have in Albany things will be better next season. I feel we can't make a trade right now because after hearing the post-game report on 99.9 the fan, many of the players have no trade clauses in their contracts. The only thing to do is not re-sign those who are unrestricted free agents next year and try to finish the season at least in the top five to get a great draft pick for next year who can come in immediately and make a difference right off the bat. Furthermore what coaches are out their who can come in and start making a difference. I'm sure JR and Mr. Karmanos aren't going to pay off Paul while their still paying Lavi. Once we get the right players in and they start gelling things will turn around. So all you STH and fans keep coming out to support this team and show them you care and not keep bashing JR and Coach Mo. I've seen this in 02-03 and stuck with them and so can you. By next season this will be a distant memory.

Agree

I will forever be a Canes fan! Win, lose or draw.

Thank You Ammy144 et et.

Given the circumstances, I'm personally proud of all who posted so far today. This was yet another opportunity for those who think with their blood and not their brains to pile on continue their cowardly cry of "fire him, fire him" while hiding behind the electronic anonymity of the net.

Decent, respectful and understanding  folk don't hit others when they are down and the Hurricanes are so down just now there's no further subterranean level for them to decend to. Big difference between objective, well-considered critical instruction and out-and-out personal verbal attacks.

Does anyone really believe that Ron, Tom and Paul as well as Mr. Rutherford are not doing all possible to get in the win column? The Hurricanes will overcome this free fall. It might take time, but those who constantly run the team down with a steady stream of vitrol must have so much personal anguish in their own lives and they feel compelled to vent on other people.

One guy who posts regularly on here (never read a positive word from him) exhibits the same mentality as the guy who dug the postholes on Mr. Calvary.

John Kennedy observed that "a rising tide lifts all boats" and the tide will eventually change. But when the Hurricanes begin to win...poor naysayers, they'll have nothing to vent their anger on when that happens.

But thanks again Ammy, adamsdoug, esteban , et. el. for well-thought-out and supportive posts.

We're pulling fotr the Hurricanes and a speedy recovery for Cam!

Cam Ward's Injury and the Back-up Goalie Situation

It seems like a particularly bad idea to go out into the marketplace for a goalie and to take on that expense when the season has gone so poorly. I have less than zero confidence in Leighton's ability to provide anything close to NHL quality goal-keeping and certainly hope I am shown to be entirely mistaken. Given the nightmare that this season has become, I suggest it makes sense to transition to next year's team. Included in that process is the need to find out whether Peters or Murphy can be an NHL quality backup goalie. As far as I am concerned, Leighton is not that person. If the Hurricane organization is going to spend additional money, I think the money is best spent either on a game-changer, first tier wing, or a fast puck-moving defenseman or in re-signing Corvo. Unless Cam Ward's injury is career-ending, he should return sometime this season or next season. So many things have gone wrong already this season, the idea of struggling to become almost in the playoffs makes much less sense to me than giving the young players a chance to gell with the core players of next year's team. If the Hurricanes don't find key players to complete the team and to fill the blatantly apparent holes in an otherwise top quality team, we will suffer next year the same way we have suffered through this year's disastrous start. Indeed, if the problems are not fixed, losing may become habit-forming for the organization and its players. This team and the Hurricanes organization does not want to become the Detroit Lions of the NHL.

The Lions of

While the canes may at this time look on paper anyway like the lions, the canes over all are far from it. But then again, that too is just my opinion. This season is NOT a total wash out yet. Let JR & the rest of the Bench do their jobs, and hopefully something that looks like " normalcy" can emerge. Sure it is easy for some of fans who have no real" vested" intrest" as many of you do there in Raleigh, but we too are fans, never the less. And the old saying that is it darkest before the dawn is true, but what shows a teams real character is how the team as a whole responds. I like many of you in the last year or so have been hard on the canes from top to bottom. as they as a team & organization have given and shown what they can and are capable of. But and while this fan is just as grossly disappointed as many of you are, i for one am NOT willing to throw them under the bus...just yet that is. Once anyone or a team loses HOPE...then a eason is truely over and lost...many of us have seen a glimmer of hope in several of the players, like Sutter,Boychuk,Cole,Cullen,Jokinen,Walker,Samsonov to name a few...but if you or I can or could be behind the bench and try to tweak or shift things around those who are and able to produce points on the board and pucks in the net would be doing no less than what Maurice,Francis & Rowe are killing themselves over in trying to do. So for all of you STHs here who are fed up and upset, i wish I had 35 billion dollars so i could buy you tickets from you in that way, it may NOT be as painful to sit and watch what is a tough thing to endure. But and in closing, let me say that there will be something good come out from all of this. yes that thought and hope still doesn't make the castor oil feeling go down any better ...but in the long run which is all we the fans and the team has, we all will be better for it and will look back on this time as true test of what theyt the players and we the fans are truly made of. Thsi situation reminds me of a child who despite our best efforts as a parent fails misably and is a total disappointment..but do we reject that child / sadly many children are in one form or another...but a child who dispite the failures who is encouraged and loved and appreciated never ever gives up...And the canes as a team nor we fans should NOT do so either...and that dear friends is how i see it...Now we sit back and ait for what announcements that will come from JR and etc...and see how things are put together. have a blessed day and good week...Be safe everyone...

Go Canes !!

Times of Adversity are Times of Opportunity

Esteban1949, well very said.  The difference between a fan and a spectator is the a team fan will rise to the occasion when the team desperately needed its fan base's support.  The team and the organization obviously need its fan base to continue to come to the games and help them as much as we can get through this unfortunate season.  After all,  when a team is crushing its opponents it's not a challenge to spend the money and times coming to games.  On the other times,  in these difficult times fan support will ultimately mean even more to the team and to the organization.  Times of adversity are times of opportunity.  Already Sutter and Boychuk have gotten the opportunity to show what they can do and they have responded with tremendous play.  I feel certain Jim Rutherford understands that some of the players are not performing well as he thought they would; and I am convinced he will make the adjustments in personnel that are needed.  Neither Maurice, Francis, nor Rutherford can be blamed for injuries to players.  As long as the Hurricanes have a game at the RBC, my family and I will be there taking pride in their successes and sharing disappointments when things don't go the way we hoped and planned.

Amen! Very well said

Amen! Very well said abramsdoug. I also will be at those games. Of course I'm disappointed in the way the year has gone so far, but I'm a true fan and I'll support my team.

Amen again!

Good or bad the Canes are my team, period. Just like youse guys, I'll never jump ship.   I just want to comment on a couple of points.

The way the Canes skaters have been playing I agree getting a goalie via trade would be a waste. With the current level of play this team would not support any goalie and it would take an elite goalie standing on his head every night to bail out the skaters right now.  I have a bit more confidence  in Leighton than you do abramsdoug, but not much more. Might as well get Peters up here and give him a shot.

We are still in early November, but because of the extended losing streak this season feels much longer. There is still  mucho time to turn it around, mathamatically speaking.  And we have seen this team do just that.  They are just not doing the things on the ice right now that they do when they play well.  This team is a collection of pretty solid players whose confidence levels are more fragile than most.  Get thenm playig well and they are tough to beat, give them any ideas they are playig poorly and they lose all memory of what they did to be a tough team to play.  If they snap out of this funk the season can be salvaged.
