Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that goaltender Cam Ward would remain at a Columbus, Ohio, hospital another day and that the team may look to trade or sign another goaltender.
Ward suffered a laceration of the left leg in the first period of the Canes' 3-2 loss at Columbus on Saturday and was taken to Riverside Hospital.
"We'll have to see how it goes," Rutherford said today of Ward's injury and recovery time. "It appears it will be a fairly long period of time."
UPDATE: Rutherford said Sunday afternoon that Ward could be out a month but that the injury is not considered season-ending. He did not confirm a report by the Columbus Dispatch that Ward underwent surgery for a laceration of a thigh muscle.
Rutherford said the Hurricanes are looking at different options: a trade, signing an available goaltender or calling up Justin Peters from Albany (AHL).
"We're talking over the options. We don't have an answer right now," he said.
Ward was expected to return to Raleigh today but Rutherford said he would be kept another day as a precautionary move.
"He's stitched up but he has to stay real stable," Rutherford said. "They want to be careful about infections and those things."
Rutherford said he quickly realized the injury was serious when he saw Ward doubled over in pain after being nicked by the skate of the Blue Jackets' Rick Nash.
"He's the type who'll get hit and never lets on," Rutherford said. "When he did not get up I knew it was more serious. I felt so bad for him.
"This just goes with everything else that has gone on this season."
The Hurricanes are winless in their last 12 games after a 3-2 loss to the Jackets and were playing without injured forwards Eric Staal and Ray Whitney. Forward Erik Cole suffered a leg injury in the second game of the season and missed 10 games.
Rutherford said he expected Whitney to return for the Canes' game Wednesday against the L.A. Kings at the RBC Center. If Whitney is not able to play, Rutherford said Zach Boychuk could be recalled from Albany -- Boychuk was reassigned to the River Rats (AHL) this morning after playing two games for the Hurricanes.
Rutherford noted conducting a trade in November is "not easy."
"But we're always looking at contingency plans," he said.

Give Leighton a Chance
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 21:34 — RiverRatsFanLeighton's earned his shot. You may be pleasently surprised. He did a phenomenal job up here in the Albany. He kept us in alot of games, and got us into the playoffs. That playoff game when he faced 102 shots was a joy to watch. When he gets in a groove, he can shut down an offense. Hopefully Cam will be back between the pipes soon enough. Maybe this injury will provide a spark for the team and end this slide. Keep the faith, it's a long season.
Mike from Albany

But if i can ask ya, since the arrival of Sutter,Boychuk and Bowman there, has the intencity level picked up there with the Rats ? As I know from what few games i have been able to listen too, it sounds like attendence might be up too ...Thanks for showing up and sharing...please feel free do you know what happen to Justin Peter's partner from last year Mr. M? did he go back home or is off playing someplace else ?later, be safe ..

Sun, 11/08/2009 - 18:24 — ctillConsider the source. The Ottawa newspapers were highly critical of Corvo when he played there. Did they go overboard with "uh-oh Joe"? Possibly. Most folks were pleasantly surprised by Corvo's defensive play last year. Pairing Corvo with a stay-at-home player (Gleason, Wallin, Ward) is supposed to cover some of Corvo's limitations and give him more freedom to move the puck and shoot.

Ward Remains Hospitalized After Surgery
Carolina goaltender Cam Ward had surgery late Saturday or early Sunday at Riverside Methodist Hospital to repair a lacerated muscle in his left thigh, The Dispatch has learned.
He's expected to remain hospitalized through Sunday, but could return to Raliegh, N.C., on Monday.
Ward was injured at 7:35 of the first period when he was clipped inadvertantly by Blue Jackets left winger Rick Nash as Nash skated through the goal crease. He left with the help of two trainers, one of them holding a towel tight to his leg to stanch the bleeding.

Interesting article
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 14:29 — Hockeydogthat make valid points. Corvo's offensive contributions are not enough to offset his defensive play, which has it's moments but overall not too good. It's sad and hard to face the truth about a player who has been as solid as Brind'Amour has been, but he is really one of the cogs responsible for the slide, or Maybe more accurate statement would be that the coaching staff giving him all the ice time is. I don't think anyone would want to take on Brindy's contract even if he agreed to a trade, at least not until the trade deadline where his experience could help a teams playoff hopes. Maybe he needs to look at hanging them up and joining the coaching staff. Clearly young Sutter has been one of the best players on this team since his call up. Brindy's role needs to be reduced significantly at this point. Yelle hasn't done much for the team so far, but he's still an upgrade over what Brindy can give the team ( except for face-offs) and might just need a bigger role on the team to become more effective. Once Staal gets back in the lineup, he, Cullen and Sutter can handle the top 3 center positions. The Canes just have too many 4th liners right now. Nostopilos, is more like No play for us, he's brought nothing he was expected to bring. Walker hasn't been used in the top 9 much but he's another that is not contributing.
I don't think it's time to pull the rebuilding card out yet, but it can't be far if this streak continues.
And the power play really stinks. No effort to work for a good shot down low, just a bunch of perimeter passing to set up a shot from up top. Not sure if this is what Ronnie is preaching, or if the players are just not executing the game plan.
I think
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 13:44 — garybdiverThe Canes are speaking volumns here. Reading some of the reports after the game, Mo almost was in tears. A very somber locker room. Now even thinking about getting another goalie? Sounds to me the only reason to even be talking about this, there are only a couple of conclusions to come to here. First, no faith in 49 or the Wardo is done for the year.
I highly doubt Wardo will be
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 14:11 — procellaeI highly doubt Ward will be gone for the whole year. He most likely will be gone for a while, but saying the whole year is a stretch. I don't think they have faith in Leighton (I am still on the fence about him. When we plays well, he is a very competent back-up). They don't believe he will not provide the top tier goaltending that this team needs consistently. If Leighton can get his form that we saw at times last season, I don't mind him filling in for Cam. Making a trade doesn't make sense right now. Bring up Peters or Murphy and see how they do at the NHL level.
Peters
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 12:34 — CaniacG4Why sign another goaltender when you are just going to have to dump him on Albany once Ward is back? I say call up Peters, he has done fairly well in Albany this season and I would like to see what he can do in the NHL. Leighton can Handle the load until Ward is healthy and Peters can give him a game or two off if needed
Canes Trade Rumors at the Ottawa Sun
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 11:29 — abramsdougFrom Ottawa Sun Article. Here's the link below. I know nothing more than what I read, but I wanted to pass it on. It confirms what I think everybody knows: (1) the power play is awful and is costing the Hurricanes game after game; (2) Brind'Amour is way too slow to play in the NHL now despite his tremendous contributions over the years; (3) Corvo is likely not to be re-signed and the Hurricanes want/need to trade him; (4) the Hurricanes need to increase overall team speed. Oh, Carolina
The Carolina Hurricanes are desperate to make changes, but GM Jim Rutherford is finding it difficult. The ’Canes were rumoured to be willing to move LW Ray Whitney, but he has a no-movement clause and that talk doesn’t make any sense. Sources say Carolina has been offering D Joe Corvo to teams trying to improve their power play. Making $2.75 million, Corvo is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and it’s doubtful he’ll be kept. The biggest issue for the ’Canes could be C Rod Brind’Amour. The 38-year-old is struggling and has two years left on his contract with a cap hit of $3.6 million per season. The ’Canes need to get quicker. A move that could be imminent in Carolina: Ron Francis taking over from coach Paul Maurice.
Martin Biron?
Sun, 11/08/2009 - 11:25 — louis12580There have been rumors circulating over several hockey sites that the Islander's might be looking to trade Biron once DePietro is back. Might the team look into that possibility?

Sun, 11/08/2009 - 11:09 — SaintMateoIf they signed a free agent.... would they be looking to sign a #1 goaltender or someone who would be a reasonable backup to our.... backup?
Either way.... this is not good..... but oh well.... this season is turning into 2002-2003 in a hurry.....
