The sweep at the hands of the Penguins still stung for Niclas Wallin and Joe Corvo three days later, especially knowing it was Carolina’s inability to stop Pittsburgh’s offense that was the Hurricanes’ downfall in the end.
As they met with the media Friday, they looked back with some introspection at what went wrong on the blue line against the Penguins.
Corvo: “It’s pretty obvious we probably didn’t play defensively as good as we wanted to play. I wouldn’t go into specifics as to what we need in terms of players, but it’s obvious we really have to play better defense to compete with that team.”
Wallin: “It’s not just in our own end of the ice. We’ve got to have back-checking. There are five guys out there. We can’t have turnovers and stuff like that. We did that during the Boston series.”
Corvo: “We’d make one mistake and they’d be looking to score. When we’re playing good hockey, we’ll have another guy coming and not give him room for tap-ins, and things like that.”
In addition to that analysis, both talked about the motivation they would take from what happened this season.
Wallin: “I’m not going to be sitting on the bike for 45 minutes thinking, ‘Stanley Cup, Stanley Cup.’ But it’s always something that pushes me.”
Corvo: “As you get older, you make your money every year, but what’s it all worth if you don’t win in the end? The American league, World juniors, I’ve never won gold, never won a title. That’s my goal.”

Not just the D
Mon, 06/08/2009 - 09:33 — robotron2084It's not simply the Red Wing D-men that are shutting down Malkin, and more specifically, Crosby. It's the forwards and Zetterberg in particular and now Datsyuk as well. That's the difference in the Canes throughout the season (and past couple of seasons). They've done well when the forwards commit to playing a strong backchecking game and have suffered immensely when they don't. I'm not saying the defensemen have no responsibility, but it's not just about them - it can't be and that's simple mathematics. You can't stop 3 opposing forwards with just two defenseman. The forwards must help out and for the Canes, there were large stretches of the season where they weren't and other stretches (like the Pens series) where even if they did, our forwards are not strong enough defensively to handle that kind of offensive skill. Brind'Amour used to be that type of player, but after a couple of knee injuries, I'm not sure he's that guy anymore.

Sat, 06/06/2009 - 15:18 — RPadiI have played defense long enough that as a defensive player it breaks your spirit when you hussle, play your ass off, take a hit to move the puck and then a teammate turns the puck over because he is being to casual or fancy with the puck. Like Wallin and Corvo said it takes a team efford to play defence and I bet they don't mean just to hussle coming back, that means just simply clearing the zone, playing the puck deep on the other teams side of the field, etc. I will love to see a statistic of the percentage of goals out of turn overs versus the percentage when you drop it all the way to the other side of the ring!!!

Fri, 05/29/2009 - 11:28 — esteban1949Corvo & Wallin are hungry enough to want anther shot at a cup run. The whole D-squad will need to sit and watch every move and D play Detroit makes on Crosby & Malkin, as several of the Detroit D-men is older than both of them. But sadly all of the D-men should have been better prepared to handle them as well as be wise as a fox to watch out for the others who liked to sneak in at the crease as they did all season. Yes in their case " experience can be a blessing" but this year some how they were " cursed". but that was ancient history now...right ?
Go Canes !
