1:55 p.m. UPDATE: Scott Walker has been fined but not suspended by the NHL.
Hurricanes forward Scott Walker has been suspended by the NHL for punching Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward in Game 5 Sunday in Boston, general manager Jim Rutherford said today.
Rutherford said a hearing with Colin Campbell, NHL senior vice president and director of hockey operations, has been set for 12:30 p.m. today. If the one-game suspension is upheld, Walker will not play in Game 6 on Tuesday.
Ward left the game with 2:47 remaining after Walker punched him in the face. Walker was given a misconduct, a fighting major and an instigator penalty. Bruins coach Claude Julien said it was feared Ward suffered an orbital fracture.
Rutherford said Walker was suspended under NHL rule 47.22, which calls for automatic suspension for any instigator penalty assessed in the last five minutes of regulation or at any point of overtime. The NHL has the discretion to waive the suspension.
If Walker is not available, Canes coach Paul Maurice it would be "no different than an injury."
"Everybody faces those things as they go through the playoffs," Maurice said. "Paddy Eaves will be disappointed it happened to Scotty and pretty darn excited he's going to get more minutes."
Maurice said forward Ryan Bayda, who missed Games 4 and 5 with the flu, is expected to return.
Despite the chippy third period in Game 5, Maurice said he didn't expect Game 6 to begin with more of the same, noting there's too much at stake.
"The game is still played between the whistles, and neither team can afford to spend that much time in the penalty box in Games 6 and 7 of a series," Maurice said.
"If it's good, clean, hard hockey and lots of hitting, because both teams have emotion, then that's the way the game should be played. If it spills over to after whistles, then the officials will have to make a decision on how tight they want to call that and what message they want to send."

What are the Bruin Fans Smoking?????
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 13:47 — canicfanWhat are you people in Boston smoking? Are you watching the same hockey game that the rest of us are? Have you not seen all the cheap shots that "your team" has been taking? Pushing guys down in the ice after the whistle has been blown? Pushing and hitting and trying to start altercations? A man ( and yes that is what the hurricanes are a group of fine men) can only take so much before they push back.....the Zebras have let this childish behavior from the Buins continue thru this series and then when one of ours pushes back oh the babies cry out then. Ward got what he deserved, Chara was lucky he didn't get his head knocked off for all the cheap shots he has been giving to Staal......Lucic bring it on down to Carolina boy.....we'll be waiting for you. We'll give you and the rest of your snot nosed teammates a real southern butt kicken and send ya'll back to Bosten until next season........Go Canes!!!!!!!
What are you smoking?
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 16:00 — brooksideAs a third generation Bs season ticket owner and relative of someone (my grandfather) who was instrumental in bringing hockey to the US, I find your comments totally absurd and uneducated.
Chara is probably the most complete athlete I've ever seen. His work ethic is something you are unable to understand.
canes, whatever. But the Whalers rocked!

Now we are in big trouble we can not possibly match up against something like this. His Grandpapi actually brought the sport of hockey with him to Plymouth!!

Tue, 05/12/2009 - 04:54 — brooksideGet a life. Yeh, I'm lowering myself by posting on a red neck blog, but as a fan of one of the original six I felt I had to.
My grandpapi was a hardworking, cigar smoking second generation American who loved sports. Brookside was the name of the grocery store he owned.
Hartford should never have allowed the whalers to escape.
By the way, don't assume all hockey fans are men.
Ok, but don't...
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 06:20 — whirligigDon't assume all Canes Fans are rednecks, or Southern-born folk for that matter. I'm a University Lecturer in a local English Dept. and originally from New Jersey. Let's face it, the hockey players all come from the "same" place, largely. How many of your Bruin "boys" are from Beantown? I'd venture to say 0.
The ad hominem attacks on this blog are getting so petty and ugly, it's starting to rival our famed Buffalo series from 2006. The Jersey fans stayed away from this blog...what gives, Boston?
Not on the Bs, Maybe, but...
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 12:11 — JumptheSharkMass has produced some fine hockey players. Here's a listing of just our current NHL representation.
Oh, by the way, the best hockey player ever to come out of Mass, but who never went professional, was Tom Glavine from Billerica. He was a better hockey player than pitcher, but followed the money.
How many from N.C.? I beleive the answer is ONE. You can go look him up.
A Lecturer?
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 07:19 — JumptheSharkI'm sure. Your arguments are sublime (uh, more like subliminal). Where do you lecture? Potatohead U?

Mon, 05/11/2009 - 13:45 — Canes73Weren't you the one that suggested the league would rather have Staal advance than Boston?
Ah...No.
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 13:57 — JumptheSharkI believe that comment was in response to all the conspiracy N.C. fanatics whining that the league wanted to see an original six final.
Morons. Yeah, the league wants to see one of their teams fail. They want their marketable Staal boys to fail. Get a grip.
But, hey, nice to see that you're so infatuated with my posts. I wrote that like last week or something.
Of course I remember
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 14:55 — Canes73That's when I realized just how big a moron you actually were.

Sharkie
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:58 — Canes73So I guess it's no longer a cheap shot. The league has lifted the suspension so it can't be. Glad we got that cleared up.
"I guess that's the final word on wether or not it was a cheap, sucker punch. The league says it was. So, come on Canes fans, argue that it wasn't a cheap shot. "
So, the fine is just a charitable donation?
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 13:24 — JumptheShark..!..
I'm sure Walker would tell you it's worth every penny
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 13:35 — Canes73It's clear that the Bruins are the only dirty team in this series since they are the ones who have had a player suspended in these playoffs.
Hey, I'm just trying to follow your reasoning (if you can call it that).
99.9 Reporting he is NOT suspended
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:45 — Cane_AddictThe game will be NASTY tomorrow!
O Pinion...
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:28 — whirligigIt seems like people cling to either official rules or "known" tradition, whichever fits their argument. I'm a diehard Canes fan, and will be going to the game Tuesday (solo, even) because I love it and this team's spirit right now. That said, Walker shouldn't have dropped his glove. He should have hit Ward, but not in that way. Ward wasn't POISED for any sort of glove-dropping altercation, and wasn't expecting that. We KNOW Ward here in the Traingle, as Caniacs. The guy's not a total dirtbag player, not a goon. He probably deserved a solid face-rake, but not what he got. I'm sorry to say it, because I like Walker...but he was wrong. The NHL has no official rule for "sucker punching" and I tend to think SP's have to do with proximity, direction, and awareness. Yes, Ward was facing Walker, but Walker took it to a level that Ward was not on. Sucker punch? Not exactly. But I have to agree with the suspension (which really sucks for us).
Otherwise, I definitely agree that calls are not being made that should be. Refs can't decide to "let the boys play" in one breath, and then call minor or BS stuff in another.
With all the colorfull
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:17 — RPadiWith all the colorfull messages from our Boston fan friends, we are going to miss you guys after Tuesday... I guess you can go and scream at Tiger Woods -He plays better golf than we do.... Booo Hooo :-(
Grow a pair
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:41 — AVisitFromBostonHe plays better then we do as well.
Dont see us crying about it though.
I personally agree
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:04 — hockeyhickwith the suspension. I LOVE the way Scotty Walker always steps up for his teammates, but it wasn't very smart for a top-6 forward to commit a suspendable infraction in the playoffs, REGARDLESS of what the other player did. It's called discipline folks. It's part of the reason we have a lead in this series. It's a big reason why we have made it this far.
Walker's reaction was exactly what Ward was hoping for-goad someone into taking a bad penalty. That's part of Ward's game. While with the Canes he played the same physical style but was never really a drop-the-gloves fighter. If he had dropped the gloves and then got knocked out-no problem. But he didn't. To me that warrants a suspension.
In my opinion the officiating has been equally bad on either side. I can deal with facewashes, and shoves, and extra little jabs in an attempt to rattle your opponent. But I truly feel the Bruins have taken that to an extreme in this series, with many of Ward's, Chara's and Looch's after-the-whistle punches to the head (not facewashes) and driving people's heads or faces into the ice. Those are the types of call that need to be made, on BOTH teams, to help keep a series from getting to the point it got last night.
If the Canes have to resort to sucker punches and cheapshots to compete in this series I'd rather lose. If the Bruins need to continue with above-and-beyond "punches" and the like to win, I'd rather not even watch the series at all. Defend it all you like, but the actions of the Wards and Lucics and Walkers of this series do NOT have a place in hockey. Their thuggery is not what I consider physical hockey. It's like watching a series full of Dale Hunters, and that ain't hockey to me.
Hockeyhick - good post- I agree with most of what you say
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:25 — Caniac324I do not think calling Walker a thug because he had enough of the after the whistle crap by bruins and lost his cool with Aaron is correct.
I am glad Walker responded and I agree that punching Aaron after he declined to fight was not smart from the suspension standpoint. One also has to remember that players are human also and can lose their temper. yes it is Aaron's game to instigate that response so from that point he got what he wanted but I somehow think he was surprised at how much of it he got!
This really gets back to poor officiating in that they have let the play get out of control. I think the Canes have been reluctant to get in to the after the play physicallity but the Refs left no choice.
That is what I have seen.
Nice Hit
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 11:39 — myze13325That was an awesome punch delivered to wards face. I have seen ward do the exact same thing, during the Eastern Conference Final against Buffalo to Brier, Ward sure as hell can not take a punch as well as he can deliver one.
I hope Walker's hand is ok!!!!!!!

Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:21 — FigNewtonIt's easy for a thug like Walker to "fight" when all he can do is sucker punch people. I'm looking forward to Game 7. Payback time when there are 5 or 6 minutes left and the B's are up by 2 or 3 goals and Lucic makes mincemeat of Walker. Then he'll find out what it's like to be in a hockey fight. And he'll have all summer to think about it. What a loser.
Hey Figgy Pudding..why wait
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 09:17 — mokimanoHey Figgy Pudding..why wait till Game 7 that will never be played...your payback time is going have to come at the tail end of Game 6 when the Canes are up and about to close out the series....that's when Luchicken and Lurch will need to get their licks in at Walker...otherwise they will sit and stew all summer long and have to wait till next season in the regular season to settle the score...you Bruins fans are so easy to poke fun at...hey do you like apples Ruins Fans??? How do you like them apples???? LOL, down goes Ward...down goes Ward...

I trust the canes and fans will give the Bruins the same treatment we gave them last 2 games in Raleigh, sounds like they threw the game to get a little extra proceeds in Raleigh !

Mon, 05/11/2009 - 11:27 — Shelly21760The Canes have been the least penalized team in the NHL for years. It is only when provoked that they will capitalize.
Yes I believe Walker was wrong. But this kind of stuff happens all the time. Why now, in the playoffs are they doing something about it.
The refs miss alot of calls for both sides. I think both teams need to chill and play hockey.
And may the better team win.

no it wasn't....
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 11:27 — gocanes2I watched that OVER and OVER on Tivo trying to see what happenend (and in slow motion I might add). It looked like Chara might have been hit on the right leg (couldn't even really see if he was actually hit), but then several seconds later goes down and favoring the left leg. I think it was diving especially since he laid there for a long time, couldn't bear any weight on it when leaving the ice and comes back out shortly thereafter....
Um no
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 12:16 — AVisitFromBostonThen you were not watching the game.
Chara went to the locker room. The period was about to end anyway.
He came back out in the third. That was 30+ minutes later.
It is a non-issue. Josi hit him, Chara went down and returned. No call, which is fine. Why are people talking about this?
And all those stating he was not looking, the player is responsible for their stick at all times. Your point can only validate that it was not intentional, which is fine. But he still took a two handed "unintentional" whack at a guys legs and scored a part that wasnt padded.
Can we move on?
