Walker not proud of punching Ward

The Canes' Scott Walker didn't go straight from the ice to the treatment room after the morning skate today, hiding out until the media departed the locker room.

Walker stood in front of his locker, patiently answering every question about the punch he threw at the Bruins' Aaron Ward in Game 5, the one that resulted in a $2,500 fine — but no suspension — from the NHL.

"I was trying to defend a teammate. It's unfortunate what happened," he said. "I haven't been known to hit somebody without their gloves on.

"The way he was, I thought there was a fight and there wasn't apparently. So I'll pay my fine and I accept the punishment."

Walker's confrontation with Ward came with 2:47 left Sunday and after Ward pushed and hit the Canes' Matt Cullen. Walker grabbed Ward's jersey and Ward threw a punch that hit Walker in the shoulder.

"I figured that means it's time to go," Walker said. "I didn't want to let him hit me three times before I started to go."

Walker landed a hard right that dropped Ward, who was at today's morning skate — with a black left eye — at the RBC Center is expected to play tonight in Game 6.

"People can say it was dirty ..." he said. "I can tell you what I felt. I thought we were fighting."

Any remorse, Walker was asked?

"Nobody likes to hit somebody when they're not really protecting themselves," he said. "But in the same sense, I've been in the other side where you're not protecting yourself and get hit. ...

"I thought we were going to be fighting and I went over and pushed him. I thought he punched me and I dropped my gloves and swung. Obviously you never want to see anybody get hurt or go down like that. For that, I'm sorry, but I've been on the other end where you think nothing will happen and you get punched.

"I think you have to defend yourself but it's not something I'm proud of. ... I'm not hoping my career is defined by that punch."

Walker noted that the 17 minutes in penalties received from the fight were his first of the playoffs.

"I had zero penalty minutes and played pretty hard against New Jersey and against Boston," he said. "It's unfortunate but we've got to move on."

Canes coach Paul Maurice later was asked about the incident and asked if it was a "sucker punch."

"We told it like we saw it and the league agreed," he said.

I'd love to see Lucic finally get into it with someone who can fight, either Walker or Gleason, heck even Conboy. Lucic's fight card from this year shows him hugging a bunch of no name fighters that don't really fight or win at all anyway.

Lucic is all talk and bravado from the Boston fans.

have come to call today, haven't they? Along with ONE reasonable B's fan.

I'm disappointed in AWard for trying to cheap-shot a former teammate on TWO teams whom he knows doesn't fight and has recently still had post-concussion syndrome. But I'm more disappointed in the Bruins as a team. It's now clear that they aren't the best team in the east but have won games through intimidation and thuggery, taking all kinds of goonish tactics and liberties during play & after the whistle: cheap-shots, elbows, cross-checking across the back and head of opponents, kicking and slamming heads to the ice.

I'm OK with hard-hitting hockey but if the Beanies were as skilled as they claim they would have come out to really play hockey against the Canes but when the Canes showed up with skill and speed they folded in a mass of confusion, completely taken off their game.

Like in game 5? How'd that work out? Looked like the canes were in mass confusion. Couldn't get out of their own zone. Only 19 shots (of the easy variety) on Thomas. In the box for two careless, self-induced penalties (too many men and a shooting the puck out of the building when they couldn't clear their D zone).

Bs, meanwhile, swarming with skill. Savard, threading the needle through three canes players to find Kessel.

Glad to see Walker stand up for his teammates, especially against Boston, a team that hits their opponents in their face regularly after whistles, to "intimidate" the other team. Glad also to see the league make the right call as well. It's funny how many Boston fans don't know what a sucker punch is - just look it up fellas.

It will be good to see Boston go down tonight. Go Canes!

I would not classify this as a sucker punch considering Ward through a jab that landed on Walker's shoulder but I do think it was not a good decision by Scotty to engage in a fight down by 4 with so little time left. Ward and Walker are still playing tonight so it really doesn't matter. This incident and the Jokinen one are amplified because of the situation in the playoffs and the fact that both focused on by the cameras and the media. Bruins have been cross-checking and slashing the whole series too. Just because they hit mostly padding when they did it doesn't make it ok. Jokinen did what all the other players do all the time but just caught Grape Ape on the ankle where there isn't as much padding. Obviously he wasn't hurt that much not to miss a shift. Play the game and let's see who wins. Both sides are getting aggressive, don't think that the Bruins haven't done anything like this the whole series, they have. Time to move on and settle this on the ice. Go Canes!!!

Defending your Teammates

According to Scott Walker, defending a teammate is equivalent to:
(1) Entering a head-head tussle as the third man;
(2) Sucker punching the opposing player int he face with his gloves on;
(3) Dropping your gloves and sucker punching the opposing player for the second time before he has a chance to understand what is going on and square off.

Gee - I thought defending a teammate was tying the opposing player up so neither would be hurt.

Scott Walker and all who defend him, including the league commissioner and disciplinarian should be proud of themselves. The game is much better for people like this (sarcastic).

I believe Ward and Walker will both be on good terms by the end of tonights game, during the handshakes.

My first reaction after the game on Sunday was that this game will be really nasty, but I believe both teams are too smart and have too much on the line to let it get that way. I expect high energy from both teams, but a hard, clean game.

Oh, and LOUD! Did I say LOUD? LOL
