Hurricanes forward Scott Walker has been fined $2,500 for his altercation with Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward but will not be suspended, Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said today.
Walker hit Ward with a punch with 2:47 left in the Canes' 4-0 loss to the Bruins on Sunday in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series and was automatically suspended. A hearing with the league was held today.
"We are satisfied with the ruling," Rutherford said in an interview. "Based on how the series has gone and the amount of punches our players have taken after the whistle, at some point you would expect someone to get it back. That's what happened."
After Ward began pushing and shoving the Canes' Matt Cullen, Walker came to Cullen's defense. The two jostled briefly before Walker punched Ward in the face.
Walker was given a misconduct, a fighting major and an
instigator penalty. Rutherford said Walker was suspended under NHL rule 47.22, which calls for automatic suspension for any instigator penalty assessed in the last five minutes of regulation or at any point of overtime.
A hearing with Colin Campbell, NHL senior vice president and
director of hockey operations, was held today.
"The one-game suspension was rescinded prior to the hearing," Rutherford said. "In the hearing, they looked at what happened in the altercation. It was judged not to be a sucker punch.
"The purpose of the rule is for cases when a game is out of hand and a team can't come back, so they send a tough guy out there with the intent of starting a fight. Ours was a regular player, who had been playing the whole game, who was not looking to fight but came to aid of a teammate who was being pushed and hit."
In a statement released by the team, Walker said, “I accept the league’s decision. Based on what was said on the ice as I was dropping my gloves, it was my understanding that I was engaged in an altercation.”

Tue, 05/12/2009 - 09:53 — bossgirlI grew up going to see Bobby Orr, Ken Hodge, and my favorite number 9!!! I remember where I was when Bobby Orr scored the overtime goal against the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1970. GO CANES!!!!!! Great work Scotty Walker!!! Cups
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 20:48 — mikebernAre you kidding about bringing up Stanley Cups? Do realize who you are talking to? Bruins fans have been dealing with Canadians fans practically since the Carolinas were one. It makes no sense to try to beat a Bruins fan over the head with ONE Stanley Cup! That's laughable. It only proves that you missed the point as to my comments. I spoke to being able to recognize the game. The series has not been rough. You have been watching too much hockey in the south. Bruins - Canadians or Carolina - ? I don't know. Who would it be? Which game would you rather watch to see passionate hockey? Your a product of your environment.
One other comment. That player from Philly and Bobby Orr? I just can't write his name in the same sentence with Orr. That's all that deserves. I have a story though. A comedian from Boston named Lenny Clarke was at a charity fundraiser. Wayne Gretzky was also there. When they were introduced Lenny Clarke said, "It's a priviledge to meet the 2nd greastest hockey player of all time". To which Gretzky replied, "You must be from Boston". No matter where I lived I'd be a fan of the black n Gold. I'll admit it, I'm a product of my environment.

Tue, 05/12/2009 - 09:01 — FigNewtonTalking about winning Cups when the teams actually had talent. Guys like Brind'Amour, Staal and Cam Ward would have been riding the bench in the AHL back then, never mind teh NHL. . Now Staal's a 40 goal scorer. Go figure...

Mon, 05/11/2009 - 19:29 — gmwannabeeYou are right..some of us are transplants here for 20 plus years having left trolls like you. I grew up listening to the same garbage as you wrote watching the Islanders fight back against O'Reilly, Cashman and company. Orrs number 4 was retired around the last cup you won? Last cup Boston won..the boards around the ice were still white without signs all over them. Whine somewhere else....
In my mind...
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 18:52 — mikebernI forget are you guys in North Carolina or South Carolina?
Oh well, what's the difference. Any comment, by fans or Gm, in regards to this series being in some way "rough" can only expose that person as a yahoo hockey fan. If some transplanted Carolina hockey fan thinks that the series has been rough so far than stay down there in the Carolinas. Anyway, here is the definitive difference between Carolina (North or South?) hockey and Boston hockey - you retired Glen Wesley's number and we retired Bobby Orr's. Enjoy the weather!
You retired the great Number 4....
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 19:28 — hockeyhick...and haven't done squat since. Boy, you really put us in our place with that post! Way to bring your"playoff game"!
"Rough" hockey? I had this debate with another hockey idiot NOT from Boston the other night:
This guy claimed that the Canes can't /don't play physical. I agree that it isn't the main ingredient in their system, but no one can deny that the Canes played physical in games 2,3, & 4. Much like no one can dispute that the Bruins played physical in games 1 and five. But to this guy, even in games that they play physical they somehow do it without being tough. He claims that it's not about fighting. But if the Canes can win the board battles, initiate the contact, make hit after hit after hit and it not be considered tough gritty hockey then I oviously don't know what real hockey is. Real rocket surgeon this guy. He has yet described to me what "tough, rough, physical" hockey is. So I offer you the same opportunity.
Does what Walker did make him tough. Not to me. Does A Ward's history of beating on the Cullens and the brieres of the world, but backing down from the Walkers and the Gleasons of the world make him tough? Is Milan Lucic "tough" because he can sit on a player's back and speedbag his face into the ice? Is Joni Pitkanen "tough" because he likes to give little crosschecks to the small of the back? No. No. No, and No. Because all of these incidents don't make you tough. If you think you can sway my opinion-feel free to try.
If the Bruins' style is what you set as the benchmark of "tough hockey" then cheapshots (Savard punching Cole in the face while he was tied up with someone else), repeated punches to the BACK of the head after making a hit (A Ward 3 times against Samsonov in game 1, and countless other times since), banging someone's head/face into the ice while sitting on there back (Lucic on Seidenberg, Chara on Cullen), and hitting people from behind (Chara on Cole, and a couple other times against other players) must be the elements that make it up. And if you cro-mags think this is how the game of hockey should be played, then I'm wasting my time.
I don't really agree with what Walker did, but at least he did it to the guys face. Not to the back of the head like that punk sissy Aaron Ward does on almost every shift. He's not tough-he's gutless. Same goes for Lucic-he's strong, but a crosscheck to someone's head makes you a coward.
So fire away toughguy! you and your badass band of black and gold pugilist cowards can seek your retribution all the way to the golf course. Oh wait...sadly, golf is a gentlemen's sport.
Hey Hickey
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 10:47 — JumptheSharkBobby Orr, throughout his entire career, spent much of his time travelling from hospital to hospital visiting terminal children. He brought them gifts, spent time with them, made friendships, followed them to whatever fate awaited them. He developed life long relationships with some of the survivors, sticking by them long into adulthood. He never once divulged to close family or friends where he had been going during those hospital visits. Whenever someone tried to make it a press event, he grew angry and basically disowned that person. He never put in for charitable contributions against his taxes. It was something he did for both the children and himself, and it was never anyone else's business.
He does this still, to this day. Oh, and besides being a flat out great person, he was a pretty good hockey player. No one should stoop to disrespecting Bobby Orr. He's a great human being (unlike you and I).
I wasn't dissing Orr...
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 16:29 — hockeyhickjust the fact that the Bruins haven't done anything since he's been gone. I still have my signed, framed, home whites #4 Bobby Orr jersey hanging in the game room (along side signed Neely, Staal, and Gleason jerseys). If I said anything bad about Orr it was by mistake. I'll re-read my post just to be sure...
Bruins Canes series
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 17:40 — NHLPugilist1972Fact 1) Carolina/Hartford has never won a playoff series against the Bruins.
Fact 2)While the Walker punch wasn't a sucker punch in the sense that Ward was facing him, it was certainly a cheap shot punching someone who still has his stick in hand and gloves on.
Fact 3) Gleason pussed out to Milan Lucic early in the game when he was challenged, which shows the yellow streak running up Carolina's back. After Ward was hit, Lucic went after Walker and not 1 Cane player, including Gleason, tried getting in Lucic's way. They wanted no part of that kid!
Fact 4) When the Bruins are watching replays of all the bullshit Cane's cheap shots, including Jokinen's slash on Chara, they are going to be so pumped up that when they hit the ice Tuesday night, they will STEAMROLL right over the Canes.
Fact 5)Carolina has the worst announcers outside of Buffalo. One idiot has convinced himself that Cam Ward is the best goalie in the league. Who did he here that from? Cam's mother? He's probably somewhere around 6th-7th. He isn't as good as Thomas, Luongo, Lindqvist, Kiprisoff, or Khabibulin.
Fact 6)Even your NC tarheels lost to Boston College, who was in a rebuilding year! Boston owns Carolina, and just like when the Patriots kicked your ass in the superbowl, the Bruins are gonna crush the hope of your entire city! Boston has 6 world titles this decade. How many does Carolina have? One? LMAO
Facts?
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 19:51 — hockeyhickFact 1) Boston has never come back from a 3-1 hole in a playoff series.
Fact 2) Aaron Ward only picks on guys he knows won't actually "hurt" him.
Fact 3) Gleason realizes that he is more improtant to his team on the ice than in the box. And please watch the replay as Gleason was the first to grab Lucic. And I used to think Lucic was a legit power forward, but even Chris Simon scored a few goals.
Fact 4) The Bruins will let revenge get the better of them and the Canes will turn the other cheek and win the series.
Fact 5) No one can understand Brickley, the Homer Simpson of Homers, with that Southy projects accent.
Fact 6) Cam Ward has never lost a game seven. Tim Thomas has never played in a game 7. Cam Ward has a Conn Smythe and a Cup. Tim Thomas? Not so much.
Fact 7) Boston will never, ever be New York City. Not even close. Sorry guys....
Fact 8) Tarheels, BC, Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, or Panthers have nothing to do with hockey.
Fact 9) The once-proud tradition that WAS Bruins hockey has been replaced with bandwagon fans, greedy owners that care nothing about the city or the fans, and a losing culture that keeps them from any hope of success. This year will continue the trend.
Fact 10) And I didn't know this until I read your post, but a human head WILL indeed fit into a human anus.
Get Your "Facts" Straight
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 11:18 — FigNewtonFact 1- Who cares that they have never come back from 3-1? This 'fact' will no longer be true Friday morning.
Fact 2- You mean kinda like Eric Staal does?
Fact 3- Who gives a crap about Gleason? He's a non-entity.
Fact 4- The B's will take revenge at the right moment. There WILL be payback on that wuss Walker. He'd better keep his head up.
Fact 5-And just who the hell is the play-by-play man for Carolina? Is it Gomer Pyle? "Gaw--leee, he hit the post, y'all". HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Fact 6- As far as Cammy, see Fact 1. Thomas played in game 7 vs. the Habs last year. Duh...
Fact 7- Boston would never, ever want to be NYC. I mean really, who would? Just a plain old dumb statement. Raliegh, on the other hand, aspires to be Mayberry. But, that is understandable since it woudl be a step up.
Fact 8- Spoken like a true hillbilly who thinks he's unearthed some genius fact that no one else knows.
Fact 9-The Carolina Hurricanes will ALWAYS be nothing but the Hartford Whalers, a second-rate franchise that couldn't cut the mustard in any true hockey market. So they had to pack it up and move it to someplace where they could attempt to actually make some money. Let's teach these rebel 'fans' about a game played on ice. So you can put 20,000 rednecks who know nothing about the sport into an arena to hoot 'n' holler and call them 'fans'. Big deal. PT Barnum must have had NC in mind when he said there's a sucker born every minute.
Fact 10- You've illustrated your own point here...
ok you got me on fact 6.

TOO FUNNY!
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 17:24 — cangapocOK - so apparently you Bruins fans think you have cornered the market on being a fan. After such a lull I would think you wouldn't remember how!
To correct you, many Canes fans, including myself, are transplants from other areas and have extensive hockey knowledge. Those that are not have caught on brilliantly and show more class than all of the other NHL fans combined - as evident in the Bruins/Canes game I attended in February. My, you are a bitter lot, aren't you? Almost makes me ashamed to admit I am a FORMER Bruins fan, not to mention a hugely grateful transplant that would never leave this fine state (or its fine people - natives AND transplants) for any amount of money. Life IS finer in CAROLINA.
WARD deserved what he got last night. He egged on the wrong player and it backfired. End of story. I always thought it would be nice to get him back to Carolina one day (did I mention he played on the 2006 WINNING STANLEY CUP TEAM?) BUT - no thanks. You can keep him. We don't need any whiny sissies on our team. Try integrity, Boston. Might do you some good!!!
And CHARA - are you kidding me? Surprised he didn't get a nosebleed when he took that dive (long way down for a giant like that).
Maybe next season, Boston!!!
hahaha were you the guy
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 17:23 — myze13325hahaha
were you the guy that predicted the Bruins in 4, then 5 then 6 then 7.
So how does it feel to not have won a Stanley cup since 1972? (I can imagine it sucks, but I can't put myself in your place personally).
Or to be down 3-2 to the 6th place team ?
To only be able to have you team win a cup when there were 14 teams in league and only to have to beat three teams to win the cup.
Little easier back then before we had these teams in the south show up, good luck making fun of Carolina while we send you back bankrupt city with broken dreams and broken faces!
New to the sport?
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 17:51 — ifyouonlyknewTo only be able to have you team win a cup when there were 14 teams in
league and only to have to beat three teams to win the cup.
Must be new to hockey. The league is so watered down now by the expansion. It might be 'more entertaining' for the casual fan but when the league was smaller it really was almost more difficult to get through a strong team without salary caps and 'drafting rules'....HABS got to pick from the Quebec leaque prior to any other team.
Hey, ifyouonlynew anything...
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 11:19 — JumptheSharkFewer teams. Better talent. Not watered down like this league, with all of these expansion franchises. Think about it. Only the best players in North America manned those teams. The 14 top goalies in all of North America.
Yeah, we've had an influx of great european and russian players. But obviously not enough to support the current field.
That's right, the Bs won when winning was more difficult than your canes could have imagined.
Oh, and we won when there were only six teams. A lot of talent packed into those playoff series....
Not to new, I grew up in
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 18:43 — myze13325Not to new, I grew up in wayzata Minnesota and played for the travel team there from Squirt to Bantam, then played for Valley Forge team outside Philly.
Now I play in a few mens leagues down here as well, we just can't play outside but we have plenty of ice. I have always been an A Ward fan since he punched Daniel Briere in the face during the Eastern conference finals and Briere went scoreless from then on (I have Wards helemet signed by the team that he wore that season).
Looks like you have no players from Mass on your Team but I enjoy watching Wheeler (from Robinsdale) and Stuart (Rochester) and Kessel (who played for the Univ of MN).
Minnesotians do not consider Carolina a big hockey big area, nor do we consider Boston one either.
Minnesotians
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 05:57 — CanarseI spent a little time this year in Minnesota watching youth hockey. Lots of programs and plenty of arrogance. We were laughed at and told we didn't belong there. Those same blowhards quickly disappeared after they got beat by a bunch of redneck kids from North Carolina.
Cool.....
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 19:31 — bbn12Just for the record Valley Forge was terrible. I used to play against them and they were of no competition for a team from Mass. And you great Minnesotians don't consider Boston a big hockey area? That is funny considering such players as Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick, Tony Amonte, Tom Barasso and Bill Guerin have come from Mass. Mass also has the best college hockey division in Hockey East. You and your Minnesotians should do your homework.

All knowing in advance that there would be 50+ penalties, tons of fights (not todays dances) and at the end we would be completely satisfied - not waiting for the league offices to render fines or suspensions. If anyone out there remembers in earnest these matchups they, like me, would be laughing out loud at this.

I am sick and tired of people talking about Cane Fans. Where do they think
the majority of them come from? That’s right defectors from the other clubs fan
pool. Once they move down here and realize where they had been living was such
a cesspool, these fans try their damnedest to erase anything and everything
that would associate them with their old lives and where they came from. Sort
of like the witness protection program but for fans and self induced. I do not
mind that these fans go from one team to the next but please find one and stick
with it through thick and thin.
I had season tickets once upon a time and the couple behind me, also season
ticket holders, wore Canes jerseys to every game until their old team came to
town and then they showed up in their old jerseys like they had been pulling
for them the whole time.
As for me born and raised in the south and I am a proud CANES fan.

Ward is no angel; no call on Chara for boarding Erik Cole, etc
Mon, 05/11/2009 - 14:03 — mumsyb13I don't remember the Rangers or A. Ward being punished for Ward's sucker punch on Kevyn Adams a few seasons ago. Except Adams wasn't standing there face to face, he was not anticipating a hit.. What's good for the goose...
If the league is worried about shots to the head, then why was Chara still playing after boarding Erik Cole and delivering shots to Staal's head? Maybe he was pitied by the officials because he was so severly injured during the game; maybe he wasn't in his right mind or something. Jokinen said it all, ""You saw what happened," Jokinen said. "He laid there five minutes and played the next shift."
