The Canes will have four regular-season games televised by U.S. national rightsholder Versus, including the team’s two 2010 NHL Compuware Premiere games from Helsinki, Finland, against the Minnesota Wild, Oct. 7-8.

Versus also will televise Carolina’s home game on Nov. 29 against the Dallas Stars, and Carolina’s game at Buffalo on March 15. Along with the four games on Versus, the Hurricanes will appear on national television rightsholders in Canada 15 times.

The Hurricanes’ 65-game Fox Sports Carolinas schedule has not been announced.

I know, I know

that hoops drives ratings and dollars.  I still retain my inalienable right to kvetch, though.

FSC is BB-driven and is

FSC is BB-driven and is likely to stay that way. However many viewers the Canes attract in the Triangle, I suspect their ratings outside the Triangle are miniscule -- not to offend anyone in Greensboro or Charlotte or Fayetteville, but that's the way things are.

FSC...

Folks need to keep in mind that FSC does what is good for FSC and the fact of the matter is that ACC Basketball is what is good for FSC. We hockey fans can complain all we want but until hockey pulls viewership numbers like basketball the current TV climate is not going to change. Of course once FSC's contract with the ACC is over they might have no choice but to broadcast more hockey games so there could be a change on the horizon.

Broadcast all the games in HD

I went to Carolina and high school in Chapel Hill, so I, too, love Carolina and ACC basketball.  But I'd much prefer to see the Hurricanes on FSC than most ACC Sunday Night Hoops games.  The big games are usually on either local broadcast or on ESPN, so FSC should concentrate on the Hurricanes, especially since the ACC rights will be pretty much exclusive to ESPN starting in 2011.  They should prioritize broadcasting Canes games in HD.  Hockey really benefits from HD.

I agree that watching the games in HD really enhances the experience.  The biggest problem is cost.  Being a "regional network" and not a national one means having a smaller budget to work with.  I believe that you need more cameras for a hockey game than a basketball game and that costs money which the regional networks don't have.

Why...

aren't ALL remaining games not shown by Versus shown by FSC?  My guess is there is still that national black-out that has something to do with exclusive broadcast rights ceded to Versus by the league.  That, and there's the not so small matter of ACC basketball.  I get it that ACC basketball, and college basketball in general is still king and gets better overall ratings. Nothing more exciting than a Miami-Virginia Tech game to get the heart pumping, is there?  We are supposed to be an NHL market, but FSC doesn't treat us like one. I know I'm just raging against the machine, but it's still mind boggling that all games aren't shown.

ACC

I agree!  One of my sons graduated from State and one from Carolina.  I do love to watch ACC basketball....BUT....hockey is number ONE with me and I am in total agreement with you that ALL of our hockey games should be televised!  I go to all the games that I possibly can but the ones that I can't make are just as important to me.  The radio, thank goodness, is available and I do appreciate Chuck, but I would much rather SEE the games!

I also agree with both of you...

But, more importantly the NHL needs to make sure ALL games are being televised by one team or the other!!! There were a handful of games last year that were not being televised by either team, so Caniacs throughout  North America couldn't watch anything. Thank God for Chuck K. and the radio broadcasts on NHL.COM.!!! I'm curiously waiting to see this year's TV broadcast schedule and hopefully ALL Canes games will be televised by somebody! The Center Ice Package on Direct TV, the So. Cal. Caniac's way of life!!!
