The official NHL ruling on LaRose's shot

Bookmark and Share

Via NHL.com

Hockey Operations reviewed the shot by Carolina's [Chad] LaRose to see if the puck was entirely across the goal line.

The referee's call on the ice was no goal — therefore video review needed to determine conclusively that the puck was over the line.

Video review determined that it was inconclusive as to whether the puck crossed the goal line in its entirety — no goal.

BS

1) I thought the reason we went to a replay is because a ref being a human being only has a few seconds or less to make a call and the video would show the reality of the situation. There should be no rule needing to overturn the refs decision ie "inconclusive evidence" ...how about what the truth is?? What a novel idea!

2) The evidence was conclusive ie the photo and another angle where the puck was clearly was bouncing inside the white and across the line for several milli-seconds(?)

3) There should be an accountability of officials who clearly did not see what anyone else saw...why and how they made the wrong call? No it did not effect the outcome but it could of and the right call should have been made.

It's easy to be a Monday

It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback (or referee, in this case) and say "It was obvious on MY TV!" However, how many of you have been up close & personal with a puck going even 70 MPH like that? I have, and it's not easy to see that few millimeters of white between the red line and the puck from the referee's point of view. It was clear that, if it were in, it was going to be REALLY close, and he made the call he saw. He clearly watched the puck until it was away from the net, and that's all you can expect.

While I would have loved to see it be called a goal, I don't think that fuzzy picture from overhead was conclusive enough for a playoff game. It absolutely looked like a goal to me, but that photo is at best fuzzy.

I think the fact that the picture is

fuzzy and STILL shows white ice between the puck and the goal line makes it more conclusive. The on-ice call was very hard to make, I agree. But I truly think that the angles of the replay that were available "clearly" showed a goal.

The on-ice officials are human, and these plays happen so fast. But that is the point of replay, and the league blew this call.

I usually don't buy into these conspiracy theories, but in this day and age, I'm also realistic enough to realize that anything is possible. Just like it is sad to think that these atheletes, with all the money that they make, will resort to cheating, it is also very sad to think that a LEAGUE would actually try and "fix" games for the simple greed and lure of the dollar. It really defeats the purpose of sports. But how owuld you ever prove it? if it is true, all sports might as well be WWE...

In seven minutes time,

They could have re-enacted the goal, with the whole officiating crew kneeling with their noses 8 inches from the red paint. Really, the warroom could have run down stairs, placed a puck in over the line, taken a picture and had the computer superimpose the shots to see if it should count. For what they claim to have done, it should have taken 30 seconds. They dragged it out because: A, the period was over so it was not effecting momentum, and B, they wanted to give Carolina time to get over the bad taste before heading into the lockerroom.

Firebettman.com

There are some great FIRE BETTMAN shirts at this website- I have been wearing mine proudly since Bettman was pushing for the caps to make the playoffs over the canes last year - Some things he said publicly just did not sit well.

Canes are annoying to the league

Ok, so lets discuss the conspiracy. There is nothing the league likes more than having big urban areas in the middle of a hockey series - Chicago, Boston, Washington, Detroit, Anaheim. For them it really blows when the Vancouvers, Carolinas etc win this thing. What they want is a Detroit/Boston match going 7 games. The Hurricanes are just annoying to the league - kind of like when the Avalanche kept winning. Bettman represents the owners, not the players or the fans and there is definately a conspiracy going on. The ref-ing in all the other games I've watched has been very good but the Carolina series' seem to have a lot of missed calls in favor of thte 'Canes opponents - almost systematic in their frequency - clutching, grabbing, stick work, punching. We are playing against both Boston and the league.

GOAL?

This morning on NHL HOME ICE they even said it was a goal.... Canes were robbed!!!! But were resourceful & kept at the Bruins & the out come was WOO WOO WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

GO CANES!!!!

So very obvious.

There is NOTHING more vile in any sport when a referee/commis so blatantly try to control the outcome of a game. Why do you take soooo long to then blow the call. So many no calls and yet we kept our composer. Great game guys, lets ruin that turd bettmans plans. GO CANES!!!!!

Original six "favorite" with refs and league

Anybody that saw that overhead view saw that when the puck was parallel to the line that it was a goal. I mean you can't miss the view and before the still pic of it being over ,it looked like it was over on the first spin out of the corner also. It was some "original six team" preference crap IMO.

NHL Prejudice

Something is wrong with the NHL and their review process when they can take seven minutes to review a play and still make the wrong call. Usually bad calls even out but not always for the Canes. Take for example last year when we were accused of being "divers". Bettman and his henchman Brad Watson made an example of the Canes and called us for diving three times in one game ( One on a Justin Williams breakaway????).
I just do not understand why we often times - not every game-but often find ourselves battling the bad calls of the refs, as well as the the opposing hockey club. Perhaps it is a prejudice of the certain people in the NHL and the rest of the sports community (I heard Tony Kornheiser comment on espn- "you cant let the tampa bays and the Carolinas win the Stanley Cup") that harbor feelings that a southern Hockey club does deserve an esteemed place in the league??
FIRE BETTMAN !
All of that aside-GO CANES

RE: NHL Pedjudice

I can't agree with more dude, Ive been saying for the lonest time that a** bettman needs to go. He obviously pushes to have the large market teams in the finals.

Jhmd2000 may be onto something:

It seems highly improbably that only Carolina has been commiting penalties in these games (shouldn't punching someone in the back of the head while they're down on the ice be a penalty?). It was painfully obvious from the overhead view that replayed repeatedly that the puck was on the white ice inside the goal w/ 0.2 seconds left. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but one would think someone is deliberately trying to influence the outcome of the series to Boston's advantage so there'd be a more marketable match up in round 3. Seems that there should be more balance in the penalty calling. Either call evenly on both teams or don't call anything and let it be a free for all.

What we think

isn't relevant...while i don't disagree ...but the ref & Toronto made the right call with what they had...Now i know no one here will agree with me...but rest assured i am and remain a Chad LaRose fan. If the puck had rung the pipes...and came back out...there would be no doubt, right ? But because it was a hairs breath away sometimes...to err on the other side would seem more prudent for the NHL...Again, like all of you here...i too feel it was a Goal..but...life and the series goes on.

Go Canes !!!

Actually Esteban your wrong,

Actually Esteban your wrong, the NHL needs us fans, you know...the ones that pay the bills by going to the games and buying the NHL Centerice package and the merchandise...so what we think is 'relevant' to the overall success of the product.  That call was butchered by the league office in Toronto last night, yeah it was a close call but they had the final word and lots of things went into that final decision, and anyone who watches the dozens of replays out there knows that the proof is in the pudding, the puck crossed the line and the Canes got robbed.  Thankfully it did not play a factor in the outcome of the game or there would have been hell to pay and the league would have had egg on their face...but hey, with a guy like Bettman running the show what do you expect...

Mokimano

I understand you point completely...but this isn't baseball where the tie goes to the runner. And Yes i too think it was a goal, but we fans who do help pay the bills...just have to let junk like that go. I am sure that over the years players in the HOF as well as the not so well known ones have had a goal or 2 taken away from them. But good players...shake it off and go on. And Chad LaRose will do the same...But lest we fans ever forget...Buttman, i mean Bettmen represents the team owners...and hopefully, we fans too..even if it appears to be only once in a while. Or so it would seem when one looks at how the lock out went and junk like that...Have a safe week...

Go Canes !!!

It was a clear goal. But

It was a clear goal. But when you are getting beat like that on home ice, then you try every means. I commented at the time that I did not think it would matter

Go Canes.

Vision Insurance?

The NHL really needs to give its employees vision insurance!!

Goal

http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/110369/versus_goal_medium.jpg

There is clearly white between the puck and the goal line. If you invert the colors in Photoshop, you can see it even clearer.

Horrible call.

Goal

It would be great to see it in high resolution; but to me it was obviously a goal.  There is white showing.  Amazing that the NHL in Toronto refused to see what was there to be seen.

If Boston had taken that shot...

they would have been awarded a goal in less than 2 minutes. It did not matter though. Glad we did not lose by one. The sacred cows in Toronto must still be sticking it to Mo. Canes must be fired up now...they can beat those bums!

Even from Iraq it looked

Even from Iraq it looked like the whole puck crossed the line. It looks like LaRose skated in front of the ref blocking his view from the goal line right at the moment the pucked crossed the goal line, all the ref saw was the puck coming back out. If the ref was on the other side of the ice it probably would have been a different story. At least one person, the red light operator got the call right. Big Win. GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How conclusive is conclusive?

The views on Versus showed it over but it is the Carolina Hurricanes and they don't wont them to win.

Et tu, Bettman?

Watching that call get upheld shows Bettman learned a thing or two from his old buddy Slippery David Stern about picking a favorite and sticking to it.

"Why won't they just go away? I've asked nicely; that's it: we going to have to start pinching goals." - GB

P.S. Boston, Cam Ward, Cam Ward, Boston.

jhmd2000, I love this

jhmd2000, I love this line!

"P.S. Boston, Cam Ward, Cam Ward, Boston."

Oh, and it was a goal, but it doesn't matter.  Our boys are used to playing uphill against the hockey establishment.  Makes winning even sweeter.  :-)

BS

Poor call on ice, sure looked conclusive on my tv.
