From Talking Points:
Either way, this isn't what the Hurricanes expected to happen today. Perhaps Rutherford overestimated the desire of Cole and LaRose to remain in Carolina. Perhaps he assigned a greater financial value to that desire than they did. And perhaps they intended to test the open market all along (for a player, the chase for that one big free-agent payday can be a strong lure).

And I shouldn't put it all
Sun, 07/05/2009 - 11:43 — robotron2084And I shouldn't put it all on the agents, kids today watch the news. The know what's going. They see Hossa and Nash getting a $60+ million deals, they see DiPietro getting a 15 year deal. Actually I'm more curious where you think all these pure of heart kids are. The kids of today, the ESPN generation, know all too well about the kinds of money that's available in professional sports.
Kids & Espn to Robotron & All
Sun, 07/05/2009 - 19:37 — esteban1949Yes i remember when Bobby and others jumped to the whl...and for many yes it was about money, as many of the vets were all but used & washed up. And since the very begining young players of all sports saw, read and heard (as they do now) of all the money floating around the leagues. And yes it bothers me. Why ? was i a former player who was rejected & etc...No, Not even close..As a very niave fan, who has gone to serveral games at different levels over the years, expect and love to see the pros, play with the same heart & ethusiasim as a bunch of kids do whe they are out there on a city pond, or an indoor rink...Those kids play their hearts out not only for the chance to go & get better or to be on a Number one team, but to play...if anyone of us were to say try and start a new team from our communites...i am sure we'd see 100 kids show up with all kinds of playing skills and some with out a hope & prayer kind of players.
and out of that 100 as the try outs progressed we'd have to wittle the number down until we had 25...what you or i ( or anyone else for that matter) will have 75 who didn't make it...Those are the kids i am talking about...in sports at any level of "serious " compitition or play...even 10 year olds on city soccor teams have it pounded in their heads...if you aint number one you aint...I have seen kids who play their hearts out on the field and on the ice...who later on and by some stroke of luck/fate...get noticed ...and get better couching and trining rhat the kids parents may not been able to afford...And i see and saw that in Chad LaRose as well as some members of the River Rats and kids who were walk ons looking for a tryout with the spokane chiefs (whl jr. leagues) while each kid may have dreams of making big one day...but for many..just getting a chance to play even when they screw up, is far more important to that kid, and their self esteem . Young players Like LaRose are there because someone took a chance, and in his case it paid off..but now after some good fortune and being part of a team that not only got into the playoffs ( as even the "experts" from TSN,THN, Fox Sports and ESPN said that the canes weren't going to get there) , but went farther than what was thought possible. And then take that and try to turn it into a 2 mil plus deal for 3 years or i'm walking, to me it is an insult to each and every kid whod love to even be in the same air space as a Chad Larose or a Tim Conboy, not because they want to see what a big money player looks like, but as a role model, that even somebody who may Not have had all the breaks in life as somer people and players do have or get...it's those everyday, the unassuming players that work their butts of are the ones the kids respect and want to be like the most...but as you pointed out I am naive and keep forgeting that the ugly side of pro-sports is what runs the world...but in closing, and i promise i won't say another word about this ...The sports world has too many Michael Vicks, and the like who are far from positive role models for the kids of today. The NHL needs role models like the NBA had with Michael Jordan,Chris Paul of today...While i do know but don't agree with the business side of NHL or any pro sport for that matter,When any sports writer from any market can only seem to focus on the money aspect of any player(s)...thast is why this fan, hates this part of hockey...why ? because when all is said and done when we the fans who help fill the seats & etc...see & hear a player say one thing, but allows & permits his/her employee ( the agent) to handle everything un pleasent concerning contract talks is doing a great dis service, But like back pockets on jeans...everybody who has an opinion...has one or 2 don't they ?? Thanks...and again...i won't say another word...so there is no need to say or reply to this opinion of mine...have a good and safe week please...
Go Canes !
One word
Sun, 07/05/2009 - 11:36 — robotron2084Agents.
You still don't seem to understand that players are virtually never involved in the negotiating process. That they've completely turned that aspect of the "game" over to their agent. And honestly, it's rightfully so because as you like to remind us of how long you've been around, you should remember how the owners used to absolutely screw the players over in early days.
In fact, I seem to recall you like tossing out the name of Bobby Hull every once and again. That dude went so far as to leave the NHL for the "lures" of a fledgling WHL.
I'm really failing to see why this is such an issue for you. The NHL is a *business* not a beer league. So a player says he "wants" to stay. I "want" a lot of things out of life too, but I'm no liar if I don't get everything I "want". He never promised "I'll be back on opening day no matter what".
A Strong Lure ?
Sun, 07/05/2009 - 07:55 — esteban1949Again I am NOT against any player at the pro level from getting a fair & honest deal for their skills & abilities. But just where along the line of any players Hockey life did any one player go to learn about those " lures" in their professional life ? Were players coached in the pee wees on how to get the best deal ? Or was it in the bantam's or the junior's were as players sat down taught and shown the finer points of getting a bigger & greater payday ? Now before anyone starts to get upset at me, please hear me out. There have been players in the past even the recent past..who still had the fresh look of wonderment, awe and excitement that they were there on the ice...actually getting to play! Who knew that yes, it was hard, very hard work & sacrifice to even get as far as they did. Was it the parents who were with each player from day one who taught them ? Was it a high school or later still possibly a college coach who drilled into their heads that anything less than being Number 1 was useless and a waste of time. Was that when a player is taught the finer points of the " lures" ?
Again I am very aware of the fact, that NHL & NFL players have a very short life span when one looks at how the sports are played, and some of the injuries players get or suffer from. Does each player who finally arrives at the pro level wake up one day with a thought or 2 of "Hey I'm Entitled" to the big bucks and if i don't get what I want, when i want, I go else where to get what i want, when i want it and how I want it! Who taught that player along their career that train of thought ? Many many players who finally did make it to the pro level never did it by NOT being a team player...a team made up of individuals, but are still a group or a team...who and when did or does that kind of training in a players life begin ?
Then one wonders why many, sadly far too many College level players of sports get lost in the process. As College sports, thanks to the urgings of the NCAA and etc...are robbing and stealing the very reason many players of sports come to any and all the universities & colleges...to get an education, some marketable job skills so that after sports they did and would have a life ..why don't we read more about students who got Master's and PhD's who made a significant medical or other break through...more than who scored more points, who is this week number one, how much the coach gave back of his/her salary so a poorer student they knew of could truly have a free education.
Could it be all of our expectations, priorities are wrong ?
Just who & when taught the kids who wanted to play for the love of the game about the lures ? I just wonder?
Go Canes !!
NetMinder
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:26 — NetMinderErik Cole hasn't been the same since Orpik took him into the boards. He didn't produce for Edmonton and, other than lighting a fire under Staal, he didn't produce for us. He has basically one move — toe drag to the inside coming down the right side — and the entire NHL knows how to defend it (note: it didn't work once in the playoffs.) Rosey represents everything that's wrong with the Canes — a lot of skill, a lot of speed, a lot of heart, no size. He had a career year and he's not afraid to throw what little weight he has around — only when he makes a hit, he's usually the one who hits the ice. C'mon — they're both good guys and everyone loves 'em. But it's time for the Canes to love 'em and leave 'em and use the salaries they're turning up their noses at to acquire some size.
Offer Changes?
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:48 — LainiencLuke,
Once a player goes to free agency, does the last offer by the original team stay on the table or can it be changed/reduced. Just out of curiosity, if the player doesn't like the Canes offer and doesn't get a better offer or attract interest from any other team, are the Canes obligated to maintain that offer or can they change the terms and conditions?
UFA
Thu, 07/02/2009 - 11:47 — JRs_FaultLainienc,
For UFA's there aren't restrictions during the negotiations. An offer can be withdrawn/refused by either party.
At the most
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:36 — esteban1949Hated time of the year for many ( myself included) hockey fans all over the
NHL, the contract talks are very nerve racking, and down right frustrating too. Each teams fan base, just as our is is suffering between withdrawals from no games being played on the ice, idol gossip & rumors of who would, could or might do this or that, speculative reporting ( sorry Chip & Luke I mean over the entire NHL and not necessarily here) it is enough to give many hard core Hockey fans who do have a life mind you, going up the wall and going CRAZY ! I have said in other postings, No one will begrudge any player from any team to the right to go after a bigger pay check, if they actually earned & deserve one.
I, as many here do know ( oh do they know) that i am a big Chad LaRose fan, but the man who is a player as a human being disappoints me. If Jussi Jokinen is more than happy to accept in an attitude of gratitude the contract he was offered ( who had better stats over all ,even when you add his stats in from TP) I feel that Chad LaRose and His agent are doing themselves a great great disservice. But we do live in America, we all do have the right to think, do and work where and how we want ( in many cases) and in the case of pro sports ask for what we thing we as a player is worth. If I as a player can't get it here, then I can go lok else where. No one here, even though we fans may not like it, again will begrudge Chad LaRose or Any Carolina Hurricane player to get the best deal they can. But to Publicly say " I want to stay" ! and then a short time later do a 180 degree turn around and threaten to go looking else where when His numbers & stats aren't even close to Jussi's...is being what my grandmother called Foolish,Misinformed and full of himself. But as a human being, i understand and don't blame the man...but he picked a fine time to pull a load of meadow muffins like that on Jr...Am i disappointed ?? Heck yes...But i am a fan, Not Chad LaRose or his agent fan. So what can i do ?? Nothing, but sit, wait, hope and Go on no matter who is wearing the red & white and sometimes black of the Carolina Hurricanes, and hope that at the end of the next season (2009-2010) the canes will hoisting the Cup...no matter who is wear number 59.....have a good afternoon & week everyone !
Go Canes !!
Well E, as usual you make a
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:40 — SkylinerWell E, as usual you make a good case for your point, and I also wish Cole well, but should he leave his failure to fulfill expectations last season with the Oilers or Hurricanes leads me to believe the team won't miss him. I still feel we made a mistake to bring him back. We acquired then traded Patrick O'Sullivan (plus a draft pick) for Cole. O'Sullivan is only 24 and has many more years of playing than does Cole; his statistics are slightly better; he is paid maybe half of what Cole was getting and he had a much longer contract. So we get Cole for maybe half a season and he (lost a better man in the process) lays down (what did he do) in the playoffs and looks for a back door and more $$$...based on what? I'm wondering if he is going to return part of his salary for last year in view of the expectations he failed to fulfill. Are we all not just a wee tad tired of these "gimme more" types of people? A player "plays" maybe 82 games a year while the average man "works" 2080 hours a year for (what is the national average now, maybe $50 K a year? It would take the average guy maybe 20 years to make what some of these guys pull in in a year. c'mon folks, it's a sport and while we all love hockey and the Hurricanes, doesn't society have things just a little out of kilter when we pay athletes this kind of money...even the ones who do not perform? Bill Guerin was paid $4.5M last season, but was happy to resign for $2M with Pittsburgh and he's a much better player than Cole, positions notwithstanding. LaRose does deserve a raise and I dislike losing him. Nobody on the team hustles like Chad. But I'm with you E....Go Canes!
Obtaining another Power Forward
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 10:07 — abramsdougI agree with clementnorman that the salary money offered to LaRose and Cole would be better served obtaining via trade or free agency one player who can consistently score, pound the net, and provide intensity. My vote is Nik Antropov. I would expect that the total cost for a three year contract for Nik Antropov would be roughly equivalent to the combined offers made to LaRose and Cole. My belief is the Boychuk, Sutter, and Bowman will make the team this year.
Antropov
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 10:44 — GoShelfIf we're looking for a consistent goal scorer at a fair price Antropov should be last on our list, Toronto gave him up because he's too expensive for what they get and NY will not re-sign him based on what he wants (overpriced), to quote Glen Sather his offer was "ridiculous". Antropov has consistently showed up on the ice about a little more than half of his career, I'm sorry he'd be a horrible choice. We're better off going after Cammi or Gionta.
Bye Cole- stay LaRose
Wed, 07/01/2009 - 08:29 — HockeydogI could see Cole going to the Habs for big money. He won't do well there with his inconsistency. The press will be merciless on him as will the fans. When Cole was brought back it was pretty cool. I hoped coming back would charge him up but that was short lived. Now I think it's time to close the book on him as a Cane unless he wants a checking role, and a checking line salary. I wish him the best. Hats off to Rutherford for seeing this one with his mind and not his heart.
LaRose would be a bigger loss, but then we don't know what he is asking for either. He is a great energy guy and one of the "leaders by example" on the team when it comes to never taking off a shift. And his production has gone up as well. I would hope with Larose JR is at least willing to be a little flexible without grossly overpaying and that Larose looks at Matt Cullen and realizes that he has an ideal situation here. I guess there could be teams out there willing to pay him 2.5 mil and make him a main cog in their
game plan, but if that team is a contender looking to shore up their role players he'd be a 3rd or 4th liner at best with not nearly the ice time and responsibility he had here.
i hope we let them walk
