From Talking Points:
My in-box is already filling up with emails from fans perplexed by and angry with the Hurricanes' re-hiring of Paul Maurice as head coach. (Presumably after they've left their angry comment here.) After all, Maurice was fired five years ago for his failure to fix the same problems that got Peter Laviolette fired.
You can read more about that in tomorrow's N&O, but here are a few points to consider.

Cronyism
Thu, 12/04/2008 - 08:12 — rmmeliA day later and just read the N&O and I am still stunned at the decision. This seems to be the finest example of an organization riddled with cronies I have ever seen. I assume Stormy will be made the assistant associate assistant head coach next as he seems to fit the coaching requirement for Jim Rutherford.

Bad business
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 16:44 — AN0NYM0USAs a STH, I strongly criticized management for raising ticket prices in an economy that was obviously headed South. The regular fans are having to shoulder the lion's share of the expense of carrying this team, including the 25% increase in parking and 10% increase in ticket prices. We even get extra tickets to try to expand our fan base. If JR can bail on Lavi after 25 games, I'm wondering if he would allow the fans the same opportunity to cash in the remaining unused tickets. Some teams allow fans to buy tickets for the first half of the season without committing to the second half. Too bad we weren't given that option. Even with this stock market, I can find a better investment.
Fan Reaction
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 14:59 — CaniacGuyWhat I would like to see, and what I think is a more realistic possibility would be a high degree of silence during the starting lineup introductions tomorrow night. At the very least, go deathly silent when Mo is announced. Yes, there will be those who think bringing Mo in is good, but even those few applauding or cheering will not "drowned out" by the silence.
Silence is the voice of the masses.
Want to send a message? Keep the place deathly void of fan input for a game.
Want to send a message? All fans in the building turn your backs toward the ice for the first 2 or 3 minutes or till the first whistle.
you know that is a great idea...
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 14:13 — wylde4canesIf the house was empty except for Pens supporters on Thursday that would be the biggest statement we could make as a fan base. Every season ticket holder should send in their ticket to Thursday's game with a note that says "JR and Mo or Us?" to Peter Karmanos. That would get the message across.
right...
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 15:01 — mrrichmond49That is actually a terrible idea. People like Karmanos do not think like normal folks like us. He would just see that as a sign that he needs to seek out relocation options. Then our guys would be playing for the Las Vegas One-Armed Bandits or the Hamilton American-Wannabe's.
If you are truly 'Wylde4canes' who will hope against hope that somehow, someway, this ends up being a good move and the team begins to entertain and win. I find it unlikely, but if it does work out, it sure would make a nice story. If it doesn't, a dismal season becomes even worse.
A New (or rehashed) Era begins tomorrow!
We have to agree to disagree
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 15:09 — wylde4canesHe may be a different cat than the rest of us, but he is a succesful business man. And you can't be one of those if you don't know how to read your consumer base.
Besides, if these are the decisions this franchise is going to choose to make going forward, empty arenas, poor on ice product, and relocation are inevitable.
History repeats itself
Wed, 12/03/2008 - 13:47 — caniac11So history has repeated itself with Maurice coming back today. So I guess its just 2 years until Lavi comes back...
Seriously, other ways history can repeat itself.
In 2005-6 the Isles fans chanted they wanted Lavi back during the Canes-Isles game. Depending on where Lavi goes, Canes fans may be doing the same thing.
Maurice said while in Toronto (though I can't see to find the link) that while in Carolina he feared for his job daily. He can be sure that will happen again.....
Anyway, Lavi showed he could win a cup and for whatever reason could not get the same momentum going again. It's too bad for the team and for this community.
The only reason I can think Maurice is back is that he must have some seriously incriminating pictures of JR or PK. The fans are obviously not in support of this.
Maybe all fans can boycott the Pens game Thursday night to show JR how happy we are with his decision.
I usually end with "Go Canes!" but now I am not so sure...
