From Talking Points:
I assume just about everyone reading this blog knows what happened in the Hurricanes’ two most recent Game 7s — against Buffalo in the 2006 Eastern Conference finals and Edmonton in the Cup finals — but I asked long-time Hurricanes radio broadcaster Chuck Kaiton for a quick synopsis of the three Game 7s the franchise played as the Hartford Whalers, all three losses, all three played on the road.

Did the road Game 7's ever happen?
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 15:04 — xpukguyNow, the talk about road game 7's has been interesting and count me among those who remember those games. But did they ever happen to this franchise? After all, its history only goes back to 1997, correct? Anything that happened prior to that (unless it involved Ron Francis and Glen Wesley) never happened, right? Caniacs need to remember and be proud of their franchise's heritage, even if it was in Hartford, Springfield and, yes, Boston. Our Team, Our Tradition.
Welcome back...

Tue, 04/28/2009 - 16:12 — ldecock (author)While the Hurricanes don't recognize the Whalers' retired numbers (although they've never given out Gordie Howe's No. 9), they do continue to include the Whalers' stats in the NHL era (post-1979) in their "franchise" records.
They also maintain a separate set of post-1997 "Hurricanes" records.
So Ron Francis is the franchise leader in games played (1,186) and Glen Wesley is second (913), while Wesley is the Hurricanes leader (729) and Francis is fourth (472).
Say what you want about the Hurricanes cutting ties with the Hartford years, and obviously that's a sore spot with Whalers fans, but I think this is one area where they've covered all the bases and paid adequate respect to their history.

Roy????
Tue, 04/28/2009 - 13:19 — Otag1Was a little confused as I read this great history regarding the May 1, 1982 game. Chuck states "the game-winning goal was scored on Roy" - I believe Roy was the goalie for Montreal, thus he was the game winning goalie, no player, goalie listed in Whaler history named Roy. At least not listed at the WhalersHockey website. Can not believe Chuck mis-spoke, however the notes, memories he shared were still a pleasure to read. Thanks Chuck.
Attached Chuck's comments below.
May 1, 1992 — Montreal 3, Hartford 2 (2OT): “The ‘92 game was something else. That went into the second overtime and Yvon Corriveau hit the crossbar just before the game-winning goal was scored on Roy. He had a breakway earlier in the game and was stopped. (Devils goalie coach) Jacques Caron was our assistant coach, our goalie coach back then with the Whalers. So he was at that game, too — just a little twist because he’s here tonight. And (Devils center) Bobby Holik played in that game (for Hartford) and (Carolina television broadcaster) John Forslund did color with me. So there’s four of us here tonight who were there.”
