From Talking Points:
For Craig Adams, of all people, who never scored a playoff goal in 29 appearances with the Hurricanes, to put the final stamp on the sweep with his second of the series — that only made it sting all the more.
But the sting of this sweep will fade with time, and what the Hurricanes will remember is not the 4-1 loss that ended the series Tuesday but the remarkable run down the stretch that got them into the playoffs, and what they did once they got there.
“That’s going to take some time,” said Eric Staal, who answered the call Tuesday and played his best game of the series. “This hurts. It doesn’t feel good, especially being swept in the third round. That’s never nice. It just doesn’t feel nice right now.”

Hooray!!
Thu, 05/28/2009 - 12:07 — HarpoonTheWhaleThank God the Penguins put an end to this nonsense and swept the Whalers from the playoffs. If you don't win the Cup, it makes no difference whether you lose in Round 1, 2, 3 or the finals. I think the Big Red Machine is unbeatable. As a Bruins fan, it was nice to see the Whalers get swept.
Hmmmm
Thu, 05/28/2009 - 17:50 — raleighcanesfanMust be pretty galling for the #1 seed team to get beat by the #6 team, especially one in a southern town which clearly does not "deserve" to even have a hockey team, eh, HTW? I'm not sure you and your team can ever live down that embarrassment.
Oh and Aaron Ward totally deserved the punch.
GREAT RIDE CANES!!!!!!
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 21:32 — lmit61What a great run you guy's gave us fans! My daughter just about cried today...not because we lost ... but because our hockey season is over. AS far as the Penguins go.. great victory..WE were out played..out shot..just completely dominated!!! My daughters 2nd favorite team is the Penguins and we are all pulling for you guy's to kick Redwings A**.GO PENGUINS!!!
THANK'S FOR A GREAT SEASON CANES....CANT WAIT FOR 2009/2010 SEASON!!!!!! GO CANES!!
Great post
Thu, 05/28/2009 - 09:36 — Canes73Thanks for bringing this forum back to what it should be about; reflecting on our great season and looking forward to next year. I've had enough of the trash talking. The Canes were the better team against Boston and the Penguins kicked our butts...end of story!
As for the Pens - please bring the cup back to the Eastern Conference...where it belongs.
Question for Jumptheshark
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 21:05 — gmwannabeeWhat round did your team lose in? What seed were they? Did they blow game 7 at home? Are you a Penguins fan now? You said you were signing off for good prior to game 7 vs Carolina...
Why are you still here?
It is former northern neighbors like you that have kept me telling people up north for 23 years that I hate it in North Carolina..so they do not move here!
North Cahlina
Fri, 05/29/2009 - 10:57 — JumptheSharkBeen there. Lived in Virginia, just on the border of NC, for three years. Vacationed plenty in Nags Head.
Didn't like anything about it. I know all about your South. Stay there. Don't come back.
By the way, the entire time I lived away from God's Country (All of New England), I remained a loyal resident and fan of local teams. I'm rooted. You're a transplant. A shiftless wanderer with no real identity. You're a gypsy. You trade teams to suit your vagrant existence.
Bottom line: Bs and Canes lose. And Detroit will win in 6 games. I'm a fan of neither Pitt or Detroit. But I know a cup-calibre team when I see one, unlike you, the hopeless fanboy. The reason I dislike you (I don't dislike the canes...I couldn't care less about them one way or the other), is because you are all fanboys who came up with excuse after excuse when your team failed. Most of you never gave the other team credit when due. Unlike me, who gave the canes plenty of props when they deserved it, and plenty of criticism when they didnt. I also criticized my Bs. Why shouldn't I if I'm unhappy with the product? But all you people could say is coulda woulda shoulda. The refs were unfair. The league doesn't want the Canes to win. The other team's players are dirty. Etc ad infinitum.
By the way, the seafood houses in NC bite hard. Especially that fraud fish house Dirty Dick's. I love how they claim to have the best seafood and then proceed to fry everything until you can't tell one item from the other. They wouldn't know a cod if one slapped them upside the head.
However, I will give props to the fishing off the coast. I never caught so many fish in a three hour span as I did off of Nags Head. That was pretty special.
Too bad no one there knows how to prepare fish.
Later, Hater. Wake up and admit your team's failings. Educate yourself in the game so you speak intelligently next time.
Touched the cup
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 12:47 — wolfpackcaniacSucks for Penguins fans. You're definitely gonna lose now. The kid touched the cup. Doesn't respect the game (dives all the time) ... doesn't know history of the game...
Bummer
nice try....
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 13:30 — Pensin6He knows the history of the game...He didn't touch it last year and they lost. That garbage is overrated.
No use trying to talk sense with you...He respects the game. The ones whining about diving are the ones left in his dust.
I'll bet you'd give your first born for a so-called diver who has the talent Sid does.
We have a better chance of losing now. We're not going to face Cam "The Sieve" Ward.
the sieve?
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 15:51 — wolfpackcaniacThat's your big clever nickname? hahahaha. How original. hahaha. How long did it take for you to come up with that???
Great post. Started laughing at the beginning with the "he respects the game", kept laughing when you admitted that he dives, and still laughing at the excellent thinking ability you so proudly showed off to the world with your "nickname".
Don't wait on the call from Chris Berman anytime soon.
You were probably the laughing boy....
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 17:44 — Pensin6That thought it was SO funny that I said Gill and Scuderi were our shutdown D pair.. That was funny too.
I'm not waiting for Chris Berman to call me. I didn't say it was clever...I think he should legally change his name to Sieve Ward.
You need a reading comprehension class..Didn't say he dove. I should apologize though. I gave your "team" too much credit. My name should be changed also...to Pensin 4.
Hey
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 19:04 — raleighcanesfanHey Pensin6 or Pensin4 -- whatever -- better watch out. Somewhere there's a Wingsin4 waiting for you.
:)
very clever.....however
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 20:32 — Pensin6Our team doesn't get confused with roadkill as yours does...They have heart and talent. You wouldn't understand that.
Wings very easily could win..but the Pens have the talent to pull it out as well. Nothing would surprise me in this series..except the Pens pulling a Canes and getting their manhood ripped out.
How does it feel?
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 16:33 — JumptheSharkHey jackass wolfpack, you're all done. Bye bye now. There isn't anything left for you to whine about. Pens tromped all over you. Enough said on that subject.
On Ward, all I can say is, wow, what an implosion. Nice glove last night. A high, soft pitch and he misses it. Great concentration level there. If he makes that save, maybe the canes work just a hair harder for the tying goal and maybe they get it. Who knows? He lost the series for you. One bad goal after another.
With that said, Detroit is pretty much unbeatable. Pens lose the series in 6 games.
Hahahaha...

You showed your true colors and your true self when you departed after spewing your nastiness and not being man or fan enough to take your payback.
Now, sir in spite of your assertions to the contrary, not all Cane's fans think our team is without fault or even unable or unwilling to admit when we're being beat by a superior opponent. Pittsburgh, for these past 3 games is certainly superior to the Canes, definitely to the Capitals and Flyers as proven by those series, and if it gets that far and it certainly does look like it will, may be superior to either the Red Wings or the Black Hawks. Brind'Amour
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 11:39 — jrjacks2Is there any way to restructure his contract? I doubt he'll retire but if the Canes pay the 4th line center 3.5 million with our internal cap, it'll seriously limit our ability to improve the roster.
That being said, I still respect everything he has done for the Hurricanes but I see an offseason where this team can improve its roster despite the internal cap.
I've always said, if you gave the Hurricanes a 4 million winger and a 4 million d-man it would be a fair fight. No shame in making the conference finals against eastern conference teams all at the cap maximum.
Lastly, I trust Jim Rutherford to not overpay to keep guys on the roster. The NHL has changed with cap influenced free agency. I hate to see players go but I feel a familiar face or two will leave.
Retirement
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 11:57 — wxray1Wouldn't matter for the external cap. The team is obligated, no matter what to account for this $3.5M against the external cap. Maybe Brindy can step aside and make room for some young cheap guy, if they work the numbers and get an agreement among both parties, but his salary is on the hook for 2 more years no matter what. Maybe because the internal cap is lower than external, JR can work it, but I'm sure Karmonos would have to approve/eat/pay the change.
I think this was probably the "prize" that JR gave Brindy for the cup. This is nice assurance. JR knew what he was getting into here. This $3.5M per year was something he knew could never be budged. JR took a chance that something terrible, like an ACL blow-out wouldn't occur. Oh well.
I don't have the collective bargaining agreement handy, but one plain language site summarizes the rule like this:
"When a player aged 35 or older signs a multi-year contract, his average
salary is counted against the team's salary cap during every year of
the contract, even if the player retires before the contract is up."
What a run. I liked this
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 11:26 — Otag1What a run. I liked this team personnel wise from the start of the season. With the "C" hurting, not fully recovered, and Williams out the management found a way to make us better. It was an amazing team effort, the entire Caniac nation should be proud, this was a successful season, just 8 wins short - wish we had won a few games in this last series and made it more interesting, yet must give the Pens the credit they deserve, kuddos Pittsburgh. It will be an interesting off season here, we have a very good nucleus and some good younger talent ready to move up. Glad I do not have to make some of the decisions that will have to be made. But with our fan base the new budget should be workable. A lot of other hockey teams will have alot more problems with the decision making due to their salary commitments. Enough said about that, I will have a void in my life the next few weeks with no Canes hockey games. Here's looking forward to next year, hate saying that at this point in time but it is what it is.
GO CANES!
Great Blog
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 10:04 — macsmomGreat blog Luke. Its a shame those classy Pens fans had to venture their way over here.
Not one player or Caniac should have their head down. I think I might even be more prouder of this team than the one that won the Cup. From their fight after the All-star break to make the playoffs, not as the 8th seed, but as the 6th. The grueling back and forth of the Jersey series. One team wins, then the next. Thinking the season is over then Jokinen and Staal find away in the last 2 minutes. Heading into Boston where everyone was saying sweep. The guys faced adversity losing a 3-1 series lead, but showed guts, heart, and that never die attitude to get it done in OT in Game 7. No one wants to lose a series, especially one in which you are swept, but I am very proud of these guys and what they have accomplished.
Staal and Ward are GOLD IMHO. Very classy, respectful and I would take them on my team any day of the week. This year we saw these 2 guys grow into men. This post-season will only make these two that much better. They won at such a young age, sometimes you need to lose, in order to grow.
As for the Pens fans who want to come over here and run their mouth. I got one word for ya: KARMA
Ask Buffalo fans how that rude, arrogant attitude worked out for them.
No More Pens Fans!!
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 08:49 — schelle92The one good thing coming out of this series ending....no more obnoxious Penguins fans! I'm sure there are some very nice Pens fans out there, but their no-class colleagues have helped them join the ranks of Buffalo fans here in Raleigh. Even though it hurts my soul to say it...GO RED WINGS!
Out with class
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 08:42 — RockyRizMy congrats to the city of Raleigh and the Canes organizaton..There are always a few people (on both sides) who mouth off with no idea of what they're talking about, but the vast majority of the canes fans, their players, coaches, and mangement showed nothing but class. With Ron Francis in your organizaton I expect no less. PS: I would love to pry Eric away from the canes and see him playing with his brother on the Pens...Good Luck next year
Here's the thing
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 09:49 — raleighcanesfanThis is what some of you Pens fans aren't getting. We're proud of our team. Incredibly proud. For a team that in January had little chance of even making the playoffs, just look at what they did. They gave us six weeks and 18 more games than we dared hope for. Oh yeah, we're proud of them.
You have a great team. They proved that. But it somehow cheapens that when you taunt the opposition and act like jerks. What is the point of that? Celebrate your team. Show a little class. Your team is a world class team - act like world class fans.
As for races, there are as many NASCAR races in PA as there are in NC so get off the NASCAR insults. Besides NASCAR is a legitimate popular sport, in many places other than NC. But if that's not your thing, I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding a drunken brawl somewhere as that seems to be popular with some of you.
I know...
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 09:54 — whirligigMy family lives in Pittsburgh and the two things I keep thinking (when I hear ridiculous comments about NASCAR and whatnot) is that there are JUST as many (let's just say) "provincial" folks in the suburbs of Pittsburgh than in the suburbs of Raleigh. That, and tons of Cans fans are northern transplants. It's such a dumb argument, the ad hominem garbage regarding "place" or "home" when it comes to hockey. And how many of the Canes players are FROM Raleigh? How many Pens players are from Pittsburgh. I'm certain it is 0.
However, to Pensin6, I guess it makes sense that you come here and respond. At least you have a specific gripe with specific comments about the game of hockey, like players or D-men etc... in that case then you do earn a certain level of told-you-so. It's really more the trash that just gets in the way, or the people who just want to unload on someone.
We have some rabid fans too. But the point is, they aren't here NOW. They stopped in after the Boston win to get loud and then left.
So, any Pens fans who come here looking for a fight are only getting the reasonable fans here...the ones who hang around all year looking for news on the Canes, development, trades, games, etc.
Players from Raleigh?
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 16:44 — JumptheSharkZilch. You have no youth programs to speak of (and I'm talking about competitive youth programs. Not learn to skate at the local public rink). No development programs of any salt. It will be years before anyone from Raleigh gets a sniff at the NHL. Unless they move north in early childhood. Pennsylvania has produced NHL players. Massachusetts has produced a ton of players. I posted last week a list of current NHLers from Mass. It was some 18 players long. And that's just active players.
However, there is hope for those of you in NC with ambition.
Believe it or not, there are some great youth players from Florida. Pretty good skills. However, they travel all the way up to Jersey and points northward often (like every other weekend) to play, seeking better competition.
By the way, there is one NHLer from NC. You can go look him up.
Really?
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 19:11 — whirligigLike this, for example:
http://www.reczone.net/
And you misread my post. My point was about the ridiculousness of cheering for one's team based on the idea that said team represents said city demographically. No one on the Pens is from Pittsburgh (was my point). So technically you are arguing about the wealth of programs in other towns when you talk trash about Carolina as a team.
Speaking of youth...God I feel bad for your kid. What a great example: Hey son, watch me as I guard the Carolina Hurricanes blog to make sure no one gets too excited about their team. Does he know you sit here all day posting negative personal attacks?
Boston Lost. Move On.
NO ONE HERE VALUES YOUR OPINION. NO ONE!!! You just come here to poison the well. It's getting ridiculous. No one was even addressing you above and you just chimed in again with your negative crap.
Why not start your own Know-Everything hockey blog or something? Really.
Ok, gotta go. But I'll keep refreshing/checking back here every thirty seconds until you reply with something scathing about my mom, or how bad I look in my Canes Jersey.
Hey Donkey....
Tue, 06/09/2009 - 17:21 — JumptheSharkI certainly do not value your opinion. Reczone.net? Is that proof that there is competitive youth hockey in NC? Ha. Your most competitive AAA team is at best our Tier 3 town team (those just coming out of Learn to Skate).
And guess what? Our best AAA team is at best a tier two team in Quebec.
That's just the way it is. But you can go on and keep fooling yourself.
And, again, as I've said in so many posts, it's not so much to do with me being a "know-it-all" as it is with NC fans being delusional blowhards. I never claimed to know it all. It just seems that way when compared to your moronic ramblings. The problem is, you and yours get peeved when an "outsider" shows up and makes you all look like rump-swab fanboys. Why do I do this? Because you refuse to criticize your team when they deserve it. Instead, you make excuses and blame everyone else (the refs, the league, the other team's dirty players and cheap shots). In your freakishly small mind, the Canes can do no wrong. When they lose, it isn't because they had a bad game; it's because they were somehow cheated. I love it when I read posts from NC Rump-Swabs that read, "the canes will win tonight! I just know they will!" With no specific roadmap drawn out for that win. Just the sheer will of the fans, that's all the canes need. The blind faithful willing them on to victory. Except Cam Ward wouldn't allow it to happen.
Bunch of Dopes. Grow a pair. Admit your team is flawed. Stop kissing Decock's a$$.
No Cam Do
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 08:28 — JumptheSharkWell, it's over. They had a good run, but were no match for the Pens.
I expect the Red Wings will pretty much do to the Pens what they did to them last year. Detroit is loaded with skilled, gritty players who know how to win. I believe we will see Gil exposed on D. And Fleury will not stand up to the quality of shots that the Franzens and zetterbergs and holmstroms and datsyuks. Plus all the quality character guys like the maltbys and mccartys and the drapers.....
Oh, and the mighty D.
Have a great summer, Canes fans.
Pens fans will be singing the blues 6 games from now.

Wed, 05/27/2009 - 08:23 — whirligigThanks for keeping this blog more purposeful and friendly. Glad to see this.
To certain Pens folk here:
What gives? Why bother firing up the all-caps text and trying to prove that your team is so much better (still)? Um, it's obvious your team is/was the better team. The Pens are great! Is it, now, that you want to be RIGHT or CORRECT? Is that the feeling you are going for?
And who the hell cares about the Whalers thing? Weird that people think these things HURT people's feelings or something.
My brother was calling me from Pittsburgh just 3 or so years ago telling me how sad a franchise the Pens were, and that the team was surely going to move.
Seems to me, any way you slice it, that coming in 4th out of 30 is a darn good season for the Canes...are you haters still on the Capitals blogs trashing them for even thinking of winning against your team? "HOW DARE YOU THINK ABOUT OR TALK ABOUT BEATING OUR PENS...HOW DARE YOU!"
Ugh.
Anyway, I think (and hope) that the Pens will beat the Wings. I do think, however, that Fleury will actually be challenged (we hardly ever challenge a goaltender consistently, truly, and especially not in that western, finesse style). The Wings will be another story in this regard. But i still think that the Pens will score goals.
Here's the thing..
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 09:13 — Pensin6Before the series started I came on here to see what your fans thought. All I read was how pathetic the Pens D was...that they wouldn't know how to handle the Canes pressure...that Ward would shut them down....
When I responded I was told how you smacked around other teams fans, how funny it was that I said Scuderi and Gill would shut down your #1 line...and that the Pens had 2 good players and a bunch of scrub wingers.
After the Pens made dogmeat out of your team...Why wouldn't I give a little back to the know it alls that gave it to me?? Don't tell me you tough guys have now developed feelings and are hurt.... Perhaps you can get together with Ward and Cole and have a group cry.
Congratulations Penguins
Wed, 05/27/2009 - 07:03 — Canes73I'm not sure the Canes played their best in this series, but that's not to take anything away from the Pens who played great. I'm not even sure their best would have been enough, given the mission that Crosby and Malkin are on.
If the Wings go on to eliminate the Hawks, I'll certainly be cheering the Pens. I wish all you Penguin fans good luck.
Thank you Canes! It was a Great season and I'm looking forward to what the off-season brings.

Tue, 05/26/2009 - 23:20 — esteban1949But the sign of a mature team is how they react when training camp and then next season starts. Many of us fans will not know until it is done, who will be back next season. Not only with the Canes, but Albany River Rats as well. So and while many fans have not agreed with members of the press who cover the Hurricanes, All this fan has ever asked was a fair, balanced story/article that covers all the bases from all the angles...Gee i wonder how and what any of the Black Aces learned during the Run for the Cup this season. But Like the Chicago Cubs fans keep saying from the left field seats..." Maybe Next Year " Thank You Canes...I am one happy fan ! Why ? Because when it counted, you did the best you could with what you had. And that is all anyone can ever ask or expect from their team. Now if the Pens can get the Cup this year at least the Eastern Conference can hold it's head up. Go Canes !!!
