Forward Brandon Sutter and defenseman Jamie McBain have been assigned to the Albany River Rats of the AHL, the Canes announced Sunday, reducing the roster to 23.
With the Canes planning to carry 21 or 22 players early in the season, the decision to send down Sutter and McBain should mean the Canes plan to keep Tim Conboy and Jay Harrison on the regular-season roster.
Forward Michael Ryan has been sidelined with a concussion suffered Monday against Atlanta.

A Raleigh native, Chip has worked at the N&O since 1979 and is the Canes beat writer. He can be reached at

Yes but..
Sun, 09/27/2009 - 23:20 — AN0NYM0USThis decision is really in the best long term interests of the player and the organization. Sutter needs the playing time to further develop his skills. He'll be back with a vengence, probably later this season but certainly next year. Luke had a great piece in the N&O several days ago--definitely worth checking out.
Aww beans !!
Sun, 09/27/2009 - 22:56 — esteban1949While i was hoping the brandon would get to stay...but as Chip pointed out Conboy & Harrison look like they made the roster...which can and is a good thing...as Tim conboy has been working his tail off these last couple of seasons trying to get & stay with the home club...Thanks Chip..
Go Canes !!
