The Hurricanes' Eric Staal is the team nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution in his community.
Staal, an alternate captain, was selected in voting by his teammates.
This season, Staal began “Eric’s Entourage,” in which he purchases a luxury suite at the RBC Center for each home game and donates it to local children’s charities. He also has been involved in the Kids N’ Community Foundation’s fundraising events and participates in team hospital visits, this year visiting UNC Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

why didn't we know this earlier
Thu, 04/02/2009 - 12:16 — xpukguyShouldn't we Caniacs have already known about the work in the community by Staal and the other Canes? The team never promotes it, which they should in this market to compete with the colleges. And the college beat reporters write about sore toes and what the guys have for supper. I guess Mr. Staff and Wire Reports must have been off that day. I know they never come to my part of Raleigh. Guess you have to live in Cary to see the Canes in the community.
Our team, our tradition.
Bitter much??
Thu, 04/02/2009 - 12:43 — JRs_FaultTalk about turning a positive story sour... what gives?
1) The Canes DO highlight their activities in the community. Check Canesvision during the intermissions or on the web. They've done this regularly this season and in season's past.
2) Staff & Wire reports... why even bring that up on this thread? The newspaper biz is what it is at this point in time, and the Canes/N&O are not alone.
3) Cary?? Did you even read the whole article? Last I checked, there's no UNC Hospital in Cary...
Of course, that was just another tired random shot... *sigh*
Uhhh JR's_Fault
Fri, 04/03/2009 - 00:07 — esteban1949i wasn't being negitive. my point is and was ...I really do appreciate the Canes, the players, and staff at the front office who do go out and do the charitable works they all do and for the groups that benift from the "attention". Yet in this day and age, how many unsung heros don't we ever see, read,or ever hear about who silently go about doing good deeds of all kinds, to all kinds of people, and children? That a super star could or has done, when no one was looking, taking a picture for a photo op to make the team, group or oganization look good in the public eye. That is and whatr I was refering to. Character of a person or a well known public figure or average person is what he/she does when no one but God is looking...That is what i was refering to, as you have to admit, there really isn't much reporting of people with Character these days is there ? Enjoy the rest of your week...
Go Canes !!

That's a Good Thing
Wed, 04/01/2009 - 14:50 — esteban1949That Eric Staal does out in public like that. But i wonder what he and others do when no one is looking ? Wouldn't that be a better way to judge one's character ? Not saying or implying anything negitive mind you, but i do remember what my grandmother taught us, that it is better for any of us to do our acts of charity when no one ( meaning the press) is looking. And because one wants & desires to do so. Go Eric
& the Canes !!
