Samson recalled from Checkers

With forward Tuomo Ruutu sidelined for three weeks with an upper-body injury, the Canes have recalled forward Jerome Samson from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL).

Samson played Monday in the Canes' 5-3 road win over the Montreal Canadiens but was reassigned Tuesday to the Checkers as forward Drayson Bowman was recalled.

Canes coach Kirk Muller said after practice today the team would first consult with Checkers coach Jeff Daniels about which player to recall. The decision was made to bring up Samson.

It's the third NHL recall this season for Samson. He notched his first NHL goal on Jan. 10 against Philadelphia.

Samson is the better pick

at this point.  He needs some playing time, which he will get, relax after a few games and finally become the NHL player he has the talent for.

Next year will be interesting.  Probably the make or break it year for Boychuk and the 'Canes.  He really hasn't shown much on his call-ups, but sometimes it is where he is put in the flow more than his talent or skill.  Personally, I think Muller has the right gut instinct on these guys having played all these years, and isn't afraid to make the call on who stays and who goes.

Two reasons

Canes need someone who can play right wing.  Boychuk has struggled for consistency at his natural position let alone move to his off wing. Second, he hasn't done enough with Charlotte to warrant that chance.

Boychuk has been playing

Boychuk has been playing right wing for the Checkers and the Canes this season, but when Dadonov came Boychuk has spent time at left wing when he and Dadonov play on the same line.

You Sure?

Are you sure about that? He is a left shot and has struggled  protecting the puck when he comes off the right side.   Not sure where he has been playing in Charlotte but JD has always said he is a natural left wing and has struggled elsewhere. I honestly can't recal seeing him on the right side when he was up with the Canes.... I sit on the side of the rink accross from the Canes bench and consistently remember him on  left wing  because on several occassions  Robert Kron sat next to me and was commenting on Boychuk's game in the defensive zone.

Samson is a right shot and has played right wing most of his career.  Unfortunately for Boychuk the current need for the Canes is natural right wingers on both Staal and Skinners lines. Even if there were a need for a left wing, I think they might give Dadonov a look first just to see what they have in him.

Yes, I am sure.   I had the

Yes, I am sure.   I had the same question you raised; but he has been playing right wing most shifts until he was put on the Dadonov line when with the Checkers.  I've watched almost all the Checkers games on AHL Live.  I do agree, however, that I think Boychuk is a left wing.

Also,  recall that Maurice said that Boychuk was exclusively a right wing.  For reference check out some of the articles about Maurice getting miffed when asked why Boychuk was not called up and Maurice said Boychuk was a right wing and at this point was not a better option than what the Hurricaned had.  Boychuk has not been called up since Muller became coach, so I don't know where Muller and MacLean will play him.

Yes, But

But you will recall that when Mo made those comments everyone thought the comment was rediculous( including you will recall many posters to  CC)  and said that if he was a right wing why did he play him on the left everytime he came up,

Not trying to be stubborn here, but I'll stick to my comment that he is a natural left wing and if he has any chance to make it in the NHL it will be a that position.  Vibes I'm getting out of Canes is that they are not high on him at the moment. It would be unfair of me to pass on specific comments but suffice it to say that several several scouts and developmental coaches have expressed deep disappointment in how he has progressed and they don't think it is because of a lack of talent.

Similar Info

Heard similar info about Boychuck. Also there was some question about his physical abilities.  Too bad.  Sounds like he needs a fresh start in another organization.

Boychuk

I also think Boychuk is a left wing; and I thought Maurice was mistaken in trying to turn Boychuk into a right wing.  It's pretty obvious, as well, that the Hurricanes organization at the present time wants to see more out of Boychuk than he is giving.  Boychuk does have talent, I think.  The merit system instituted by Muller means that  the Checkers players earn a call up through their performance and effort with the Checkers.  Still, it only makes sense prior to jettisoning a top prospect to give him a chance under a new coach.

????

What happened to Boychuk ? I was hoping he would get a chance with Muller......
