The Canes have reassigned forward Jerome Samson to the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.

Samson, 24, was recalled to Carolina for the first time this season Jan. 10. He played in three games with the Hurricanes before suffering an upper-body injury against the Boston Bruins that sidelined him for five games.

Samson scored his first NHL goal on Jan. 10 against Philadelphia, and now has one goal and four assists in 33 career NHL games with Carolina.

Boychuk is imo maybe the 5th

Boychuk is imo maybe the 5th best forward in Charlotte that's why he has not been called up as he still lacking ,and apparently not interested in the defensive effort it takes to be an NHL player.

Has Boychuk fallen off JR's

Has Boychuk fallen off JR's radar? Boychuk will be an RFA at season's end. Perhaps he is trade bait.

Boychuk

It seems pretty clear Boychuk is not in favor with Canes management.  At this point I would say he needs a new start.  It would probably be a good idea to trade him if they can.

Get the guy back to playing shape

Then bring him back for the rest of the year.  IMO, one of the better forwards coming out of CLT.

Who sits

So who would you have sit?

who sits?

I would send Nash back to Charlotte when Samson is back to being in game shape.  Me thinks this is more about conditioning, than being demoted.  It's nice and all that when this team is home, but if something happens to one of the forwards on the upcoming road trip, then it's a dicey situation with only 12 forwards.  Who knows, maybe one of the existing forwards will be dealt, maybe not. Somehow I lean towards the latter.

Nash

To be fair it was only one game, but in my opinion there was rarely a moment where Nash looked like an offensive threat.  He looks sound positionally, but there is no way he is a good fit with Skinner and Jussi.  I liked Samson's game when he was here. Also Dalpe's.  And Bowman is solid.  If there are trades involving Canes veteran forwards I think you will see two of or all three guys back up.  If i were JR I'd try to get the most I could for Ruutu and also consider moving LaRose if he brought back say a 2nd round pick. Maybe Ruutu could be resigned this summer.

Getting Ready for 2012-2013

From what I've seen of Nash, he is a defense first center and is very cerebral about hockey.  He does have offensive upside, but he is not an offensive risktaker.  I do think as Nash gains confidence, he'll be more noticeable offensively.  In some ways, I've wondered if Sutter might be a good fit as a second line center with Nash as the third line center.

The Nodl/Sutter/Dwyer line has been excellent as a defensive line; and if merit is the driving force for time on ice, they deserve to stay intact as a line.  It leaves LaRose as odd man out.  I agree that all signs point to Ruutu being traded; but with Jim Rutherford working hard to re-sign Ruutu as an UFA.  On the other hand,  I wonder if Jim Rutherford isn't going to a more Aces and Spaces kind of approach for finding a wing for Staal.  If Allen, Spacek, Ruutu, and LaRose are all traded, Jim Rutherford can go against his prior instincts and sign an elite forward.  Parise seems to me to be the best fit for Staal among the upcoming UFAs.  Carter is a beast of a player; but the question is whether the Hurricanes would ever invest in that long of a contract for anybody, no matter how talented.

Carter is a gifted sniper, but....

...hardly a beast. He is soft, one-dimensional (even though he is listed as a center he plays more like a wing), moody, and I think has some serious character issues. It's still too early to judge his time in Columbus. He was a sniper, and only a sniper, on a loaded team whose many shortcomings were masked by players like Briere, Richards, Hartnell, and so on. While his offensive ability would be welcomed, I doubt he would be the all-around type of player needed to justify his salary here in Raleigh.

As for Sutter, with his work ethic and hockey smarts he will thrive in almost any situation he is put in. I could definitely see him as a no 2 center on this team.

Parise is a great, great player.  I just don't see him signing here. And I see Jeff Skinner as the next Parise.

I'm also not convinced that we need to focus solely on UFAs. With the potential to have a stockpile of picks (and decent picks at that) and some decent prospects going into the draft  I can see us being able to make some serious trade offers for some top talent, not just trying to sign UFAs.

Beast of a Player

Carter has amazing skills; but does he fit with the Muller Accountability Approach?  I don't know enough about Carter to say one way or the other.  It's an abstraction, of course, to postulate about trades.  Chris Stewart continues to be mentioned as being available; and he is exactly what the Hurricanes need. With the picks and prospects in the system, if the Hurricanes added Chris Stewart, they'd be in good shape at forward.  I do think the more Jim Rutherford gazes as the available UFAs and potential trades, the more he will decide it's a good plan to re-sign Ruutu.

Doubt C. Stewart will be available.

Stranger things have happened, but seeing that he hasn't been in STL that long, they gave up a ton to get him, and they are in the playoff hunt I doubt they will be sellers. I'm also not convinced he is the type of player we need. As important as goal-scoring is to this team, so should be another veteran presence. I would loveloveLOVE to have  Milan Lucic on Staal's wing, and a Scott Walker/Travis Moen-type guy in the room.

Another Stewart?

No thanks.

The story I have heard is that the one we have came into camp significantly out of shape.  I'd bet a lot of cash that there won't be another Stewart in Carolina and the one we have is very unlikely to be resigned.
