Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and miss the final nine games of the season, coach Paul Maurice said today.
Ruutu, who has 14 goals and 21 assists, has played with a damaged shoulder much of the season, Maurice said.
"It's gotten to the point he just can't play his game anymore," Maurice said. "Give him all the credit because he has played in some pain and played his game in some pain. He was very, very physical as long as he could be but he just can't do it anymore."
Maurice said the rehab would be extensive for Ruutu, who played for the Finnish Olympic team in Vancouver. He said the Canes' place in the standings had no bearing on the decision.
Maurice said no decision had yet been made on which player to recall from Albany.
