Canes practice had ended today at noon at the RBC Center and general manager Jim Rutherford was still waiting.
Rutherford said he expects to hear today whether forward Tuomo Ruutu will accept a contract-extension offer.
UPDATE, 2:35 pm: Ruutu is expected to re-sign with Canes today. Official announcement soon to come.
Ruutu, who has been sidelined with an upper-body injury, will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Rutherford said Wednesday morning that was he was hopeful Ruutu would accept the extension and remain with the Canes.
"We've worked very hard on this," Rutherford said. "We've gone through the process to the end. We've gone as far as we can go and we are hopeful he'll be staying."
Goaltender Cam Ward was not at practice today, but Brian Boucher was. Ward has a lower-body injury but Canes coach Kirk Muller said it's possible he could start Thursday against the Anaheim Ducks. If not, Justin Peters again will be the starter.
"We're not going to use Cam until we know that he's ready to go and he's 100 percent healthy," Muller said. "But with Peters playing the way he is we're certainly confident to be able to use him if we have to tomorrow."
Boucher has been out since Dec. 6 with a lower-body injury and had not practiced with the team until today. While he made it through the full practice -- Jorge Alves was dressed but was not needed -- Muller said Boucher was a week to 10 days away from being able to play or be available as a backup.
Forwards Jiri Tlusty and Chad LaRose were not at practice. Muller said he expects Tlusty to play against the Ducks but said LaRose (upper-body) could be out a week.
