RALEIGH — David Legwand had a goal and two assists to spur the Nashville Predators past the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 Friday in the Canes' preseason opener at the RBC Center.

Second-period goals by Legwand and Dan Hamhuis gave Nashville a 3-1 lead after two periods. Eric Staal scored for the Canes early in the third to make it 3-2, but Carolina could not tie it up.

Legwand scored unassisted at 3:20 of the second, skating into the slot between Zach Boychuk, Brandon Sutter and Tim Conboy and zipping a shot past the Canes' Cam Ward.

Hamhuis scored late in the period off a perfect feed from Michael Santorelli, who scored the Preds' first goal of the game and added an assist.

Ward started in goal for the Canes while the Preds (2-0) started Pekka Rinne and turned to Mark Dekanich midway the second period. Pekka faced just 11 shots and had 10 saves.

Neither team could score in the first 17 minutes of the game, then there were two goals 58 seconds apart as the first period ended in a 1-1 tie.

Erik Cole gave the Canes a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 17:10, with assists from Zach Boychuk and Chad LaRose. But the Preds tied it 1-1 at 18:08 on a blast from the left circle by Santorelli.

Both goalies made nice early saves — the Canes' Cam Ward on a Martin Erat shot, the Preds' Pekka Rinne on an Eric Staal shot. ...

The Canes' line of Zach Boychuk, Brandon Sutter and Tim Conboy provided some early energy but the Canes have two shots on goal in the first eight minutes. Boychuk drew the game's first penalty, a tripping call at center ice.

Lot of activity on the first power play. Tuomo Ruutu had a few good looks, Joe Corvo fired a 25-footer and Chad LaRose a hard shot that Rinne smothered. ...

The Canes' first injury came with 6:40 left in the first. Defenseman Aaron Ward was crunched to the boards by Peter Olvecky in front of the Carolina bench, was slow to get up and was taken to the locker room. Ward quickly returned. ...

First fight: the Canes' Nicolas Blanchard and Preds' Triston Grant dropped the gloves and went at it with 12 minutes left in the second. The referees let the crowd get its money's worth. ...

There was a familiar face in the RBC Center: Martin Gelinas. The former Canes forward is the Predators' director of player development. ..

The Canes next play in Atlanta on Monday night. Carolina, which played six preseason games last season, has four this year. ...

Very little offense by the

Very little offense by the Canes in 5-on-5 situations for the first 50 minutes. Nashville looked great on defense, although their second goalie was shaky. The Canes did increase their energy level in the last 10 minutes. Boychuk's giveaway set up the second Nashville goal. Ray Whitney's inteference penalty late in the game looked ugly, but I'm sure he thought it was necessary to prevent another scoring chance by Nashville.

Esteban on Bret coming back..

Can't happen.. CBA issue.. has nothing to do with JR wanting to do it or not. That is the information I have learned about this.

Thanks Caniac47

for the information...esteban thinks to himself that not only does he need a copy of the "official" NHL Ruls...but the latest copy of the CBA too...Gee as if i don't have enough to read now as it is !! Thanks again

Go Canes !!

Hedican and CBA

Does the CBA prohibit retired players from unretiring and signing a contract due to the minimum contract price and the salary cap?  Even so,  perhaps there can be a recognition of Brett Hedican at the RBC where he is presented his old jersey or something similar.

Canes v. Predators

Chip,

Excellent summary of the game. I had to miss the first period but saw the second and third periods. The crowd was pretty engaged even though the numbers were smaller than I would have thought. My first impression of the team in general was that it was definitely bigger and more physical than last year's team. Boychuk and Sutter had some flashes of impressive play; but like almost all young players had some moments that they will relive on video as "coaching and learning opportunities." Harrison was quite impressive and plays with a physical edge. Aaron Ward was a pleasure to watch. I didn't appreciate the importance of his role with the Hurricanes until he left. I thought Blanchard also brought a physical element to the ice and he looks even bigger than 6'3" and 200 lbs. The power play looked like the Hurricanes power play at the start of last season. Ruutu was banging in the dirty spaces; but the team still could use some more net presence, so the Predators' defense was able to collapse and prevent any decent shooting lanes. The last penalty of the game was Whitney skating hard back down the ice into the defensive zone and accidentally hammering a Predator who didn't realize Whitney was coming. Both Whitney and the Predator seemed to act like, "well, that is the kind of thing that happens in the pre-season." I thought it also showed how deeply competitive Whitney is that he was sprinting back that hard in a pre-season game. My other reaction to the Hurricanes team in general is that they all love to play hockey; and there was never a time even one player was going through the motions. They were rusty; but they were giving it 100%. It will be a fun team to watch this year.

Chips first

article posted earlier...had it right...while there are good things in this loss, there were lots of poor thngs to fix and change. But I felt the empty netter was all to much of a reminder of how the Canes need to get and keep the D in focus and in force. 1 down 3 to go...and monday should be alot different there in Atlanta. I was hoping durin Chuck K's interview with JR that JR would have said something about bringing Bret back for a day so he could retire as a cane...but sadly...Nothing. Hey Chip...can you try and find out if JR is resceptive to something like that ?

Go Canes !!
