Hurricanes 4, Penguins 3 (OT)

RALEIGH -- A night after an overtime loss to the Washington Capitals, the Hurricanes went to overtime again Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. But Carolina gutted out a 4-3 victory on Brian Pothier's goal 23 seconds into the OT.

Pothier took a pass from Ray Whitney, who had a goal and assist, in the right circle and smashed a shot past goaltender Brent Johnson to beat the defending Stanley Cup champions.

"I think the team we played tonight has proven all year long they are not going to stop playing," Pens coach Dan Bylsma said. "They are going to work regardless of the standings or what the score is."

Eric Staal's first goal in 10 games, early in the second, gave the Canes a 3-2 lead but Matt Cooke has tied it for the Pens.

The Canes trailed 2-0 just 5:29 into the game but tied the score on goals by Ray Whitney and Zach Boychuk and it was 2-2 after the first period.

The Canes' Brandon Sutter suffered a lower-body injury late in the first when his right leg was entangled with the Pens' Kris Letang. Sutter was not able to return, with Jussi Jokinen moving to second-line center.

Staal scored his 21st at 2:09 on a pass from behind the goal from Erik Cole, back in the lineup after missing the Caps game with an illness.

Cooke scored on an odd-man rush into the Carolina zone at 6:00, taking a pass from Pascal Dupuis, who earned his second assist.

The Canes had 1:39 of a 5-on-3 after an interference penalty on Mark Eaton and a delay of game against Sergei Gonchar. But the Canes could not get off a shot as the Pens killed off both penalties.

Whitney scored on the power play at 7:45 and Boychuk on a nifty backhander from the slot at 9:11.

Jordan Staal's goal just 1:04 into the game pushed the Pens ahead and Bill Guerin soon added a power-play score for a 2-0 lead.

The Pens won a battle behind the Carolina net and Pascal Dupuis fed Staal in front for a top-shelf shot that Justin Peters couldn't stop.

Guerin scored after shots by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Whitney answered just 10 seconds into the Canes' first power play after Sergei Gonchar was penalized for boarding Chad LaRose. It was Whitney's first goal in six games and his 20th of the season.

Boychuk scored unassisted to tie it. Pouncing on a loose puck after a faceoff in the Pens' zone, he whipped a backhand shot past defenseman Brooks Orpik and goaltender Brent Johnson for his second goal of the season.

The Canes' Erik Cole was able to play and is on Rod Brind'Amour's line with Sergei Samsonov. ...

Statistical oddity: the Canes have more power-play goals (48) than the Pens (42). Pittsburgh is 21st in the NHL on the power play. ...

The Pens are 5-0-3 in last eight games and 4-0 since Olympic break. Canes are 3-1-1 since break and have won last seven at the RBC Center. ...

5 on 3

Would the coaching staff please tell Joni to shoot the puck. He likes to pass up the chance when he has an open look. Maybe we should hold up signs telling him to shoot the puck when he has it. Their is no telling how many more goals he could have if he would just shoot the puck.

Pitkanen has 138 shots on

Pitkanen has 138 shots on goal this season... third highest among all Canes. Whitney has 141 and Staal has 213. The next highest D'man on the list is Gleason with 73.

Good to Steal One

As a former player I can empathize with the boys on what it feels it like to play a top tier team in a high tempo OT game and then rush home to play another elite team that is well rested. You feel a half step behind the whole night and the legs just don't want to go. That was how the Canes looked last night after an excellent effort against the Caps.
That doesn't excuse the tactical failure of the 5 on 3. The Pens are obviously aware that the Canes like to initiate their PP scoring chances from the points and they countered with an aggressive reverse triangle with two men high. The Canes need to read that and understand that means we have them outnumbered 3 to 1 down low. You need to create movement and cycles to get puck penetration and mysteriously they persisted in trying to get a shot from the point which was never going to be there. I'm sure Ronnie and Mo go over that countless times in practice but last night it did not translate onto the ice.
While I wasn't so impressed with Cole's overall effort, he does seem to be slowly getting his game legs back after being away for over 30 games. It is like exhibition season all over for him and it will take time. More concerning is whether the repeated upper body injuries ( read back/neck) will either change his reckless attacking style or cause a premature retirement from the game. I think this will be an interesting story to watch next season and wish him all the best.
No one has mentioned losing Sutter in the first period. Looked like an ankle sprain or bruise. That meant an already tired team was down a key forward and the Canes use the center position to battle down low and behind the net in the defensive zone. That was a major loss and contributed to the low shot output and lack of forcing the play offensively. Brandon has played awfully well lately and he was missed.
Peters was fighting his rebound control but battled through that and was solid. That is the sign of a good goaltender with strong fundamentals and he should have a great future. But Pothier has been the biggest revelation from my viewpoint. He has great position, an active stick and tremendous hockey sense. He moves the puck well and plays just a really solid all around game. He is, of course, a bit of a roster risk due to his history of concussions but I think he will be worth the risk to sign him for next season since he could stabilize what likely will be a group of very young D next season.

Hockey works in strange ways but it all evens out. We should have beat the Caps in regulation but lost in OT. We should have lost to the Pens in regulation but won in OT. You have to love this game for its fast paced skill, high speed plays and collisions, and sometimes surprsing outcomes!

5 on 3

Good observation about the 5 on 3. Staal's the guy that would initiate a play from down low, but he was on the point. That's what they get for trading Corvo and Cullen. I bet Sutter will get some looks at the point on a PP, but he wasn't available at the time, either.

5 on 3 for the Hurricanes

An excellent way to attack low on a 5 on 2 there the defense packs in tight is to have a player or player who can control the puck in traffic low and take advantage of the mismatches created by that defensive pattern.   It is not an ideal situation for the Hurricanes team at present because the team lacks a player or two with size who can force the defenders to commit.  The Hurricanes were looking for passing lanes that did not exist. By comparison,  Washington has players who are able to control the puck in traffic; and they can make scoring on the power play  look like child's play.

Osala is a great addition for trying to improve the Hurricanes size inside.  Hopefully, the upcoming draft will also provide some help in that regard.   It would also help if McBain or Rodney are able to successfully play the point next season.

Nice Win

Some nights you need to steel one, without the play of Peters the Canes wouldn't have had a chance, he was great. Cole looked really good, he put a lot of pressure on Pens dmen and made badly needed space for Staal.

Canes win ??

for the second game in a row the canes as a team allowed the game to end in a tie...yes 1 point is better than 0 points...but in both cases neither game should have went into OT in the second and 3rd periods the canes had and missed several scoring chances by sitting back too much and too far away...in tonights game this fan only saw of 3 occassions where there was any canes player near or at the net when the canes were pressing and keeping the puck in the Pens end of the ice...but hey...I'll take this win...but and again this game and with the caps the night before should have gone into OT ...and what was up with the lack of shooting during the 5 on 3 ? but hell...after the dust had cleared the Canes won...it wasn't pretty...but they won...and the Canes " magic number" is what now ??

Thanks Chip...

Go Canes !!

Good Job

Once again, the Canes come through at home. Congrats on beating my Pens.  But, like their neighbors (NCSt), they's played great down the stretch after slow starts and mightnot go farther.

Of course, if the Bruins keep sliding, the Canes could climb to 8th, but they might not have enough games left to get enough points.  But it has been great following the Canes this calendar year!
