Panthers 5, Hurricanes 0 (second period):
The Panthers never look back after the second period, when they scored three goals and twice in 12 seconds.
First, center Anthony Stewart breaks away and backhands the puck past Ward at 9:18 of the second period.
Then, at 9:20, center Gregory Campbell wrists one past Ward in the slot. Right wing Radek Dvorak had centered the puck to Campbell from the right wing.
Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice responds by pulling Ward from the game for backup Michael Leighton.
Then center Michael Frolik scored at 13:33 to make the score 5-0, firing from the slot on the pass from Kamil Kreps, who was in the left corner. ...
The Hurricanes have a couple of defensive breakdowns which lead to both goals. Carolina out-shot the Panthers 15-8. They had a few close chances to score on the power play that closed out the period. There's 21 seconds left on Panthers center Kamil Kreps' hooking penalty. ...
Florida center Nathan Horton scores at 7:31, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead, wristing the puck past Cam Ward on the pass from defenseman Keith Ballard, who was on the left wing.
Then Horton gets an assist after forward Richard Zednik fires in his own rebound at 12:49. ...
No changes in the Canes' lines in pregame. Rod Brind'Amour, returning after missing two games to treat a groin injury, is the fourth-line center with Brandon Sutter and Ryan Bayda on the wings.
Jussi Jokinen, obtained in trade Saturday from Tampa Bay, again will center a line with Chad LaRose and Patrick Eaves.
Jokinen played here recently, though, as a member of the
Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 29, a game the Hurricanes won 3-2. Jokinen
was on the ice for 13:55 in that game, firing off two shots. ...
Here are the Hurricanes' lines:
Sergei Samsonov, Eric Staal and Tuomo Ruutu
Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen and Justin Williams
Chad LaRose, Jussi Jokinen and Patrick Eaves
Ryan Bayda, Rod Brind'Amour and Brandon Sutter
...
The Canes are first in the NHL in fewest penalty minutes (9.8) per game and the Panthers are tied for third (11.6). When the Panthers beat the Canes 4-2 on Jan. 8, they did not have a penalty. It's the only time this season the Canes did not have a power play. ...
Carolina has allowed just four power-play goals in the last nine games, a big reason they were 6-3-0 in that span. ...

Bad Team
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 11:23 — CanarseBig game. Nearly a full house. The Canes respond with NO HEART. They were whipped all night. The shot count was misleading. Most of those shots had no hope of going in. Of Staal's 11 shots maybe 2 were of any significance. The Carolina D was putrid. Loose pucks in the slot lead to bad things. That happened at least 3 times in the first period. I'm not sure who Wallin ran into on the line change that led to the breakaway, but that was two guys not even paying attention.
Brind'Amour was fine last night. He actually made a few nice plays. More than I can say for Staal. Brind'Amour has had a poor season, but take enough time to actually watch the game before you blame it all on him. The one thing that should be taken from this season is that Staal is NOT captain material. He's a great player and I would never trade him, but the Canes need another top tier player who actually has a pair of stones to lead them.
Funny
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 09:39 — HockeydogHow we see many more posts when the Canes lose.
Brind'Amour didn't cause the Canes to lose.
Wallin was awful. Directly responsible for at least the breakaway, nice pick for the other team.
Team worked hard, but nothing was working. Passing was bad and they just didn't skate as a unit. They were generally out of sync all night. They just didn't play well, which sucks because this was an important game. Move on.
Agreed
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 10:37 — bang#17 is not to blame for the pitiful display last night. His +/- was 0 which was a star performance for this team considering the fact that several key players were -4 and -3 for the night. If you want someone to blame, look at those guys.

Fri, 02/13/2009 - 06:59 — NetMinderThat's how many fans showed up to watch the "no show" Canes play the biggest game of the year. They were waiting to erupt ... to turn the loudest house in the NHL into no place for Panthers.By the end of the second period, there were probably 9,000 of us and that number continued to dwindle. Just as Mo's presence behind the bench recalls those wonderful Greensboro days, the RBC Center looked eerily like the Coliseum half way through the third. We had a lot of "Mo" (as in momentum) coming out of the West Coast swing. Unfortunately, we have another kind of Mo ... a head coach who can't get his team up for a pivotal game.
Never left early until last night
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 09:24 — wxray1And then I got stuck in a traffic jam after the 2nd period. Seriously, it was like the end of the game. Cars pouring out of the lot.
Call me a bad fan, but for my 3 years of season ticket games, I have stayed to the bitter end. After the 2nd period of this game, I was numb. "The Office" was on at 9PM, and was looking forward to some entertainment. It certainly wasn't at RBC.
Actually, let me say this. It was. Hand it to the Panthers. They were sharp. They jumped on every opportunity. Before Wardo's head could "turn on a swivel", the puck was already bouncing off the back of the net. They buried every opportunity they had. As a disconnected hockey observer, it was entertaining to watch a team make such good use of their opportunties.
But I didn't want to be entertained like that for 20 more minutes. I'm not a Panthers fan. 5 of those was enough to fill up my generic hockey fan quotient. It was time to leave.
I need to shake this off, but right now, I'm not a happy camper. This team is distressing to watch.
Sadly
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 06:51 — esteban1949Even the " BOO BIRDS" were missing for most of the game too! It's sad that guys like Corovo,Eaves,LaRose,Rodney and the new guy Jokinen along with Ruutu played thier hearts out and here after the game Forslund & Tracy never said a word about that and was more of a funeral wake at _______ (name your favorite funeral parlor here) ...it seemed that Florida coaching staff had been watchijg our films more than we were watching theirs...go figure...On a happier note..The Albany River Rats won 4-2 ...
Brind'Amour Must go
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 01:43 — bearcat08Albany, Vancouver Island, wherever he wants to go, but he can't keep playing on this squad. For the three games he didn't play on the west coast, the team was engaged, fast, determined and gritty, making the most of their chances. With him as the emotional leader in the game, they looked like they were playing tea party. Staal looks pithy when Brindy plays, and I wonder who has more years left in him. This was the biggest game of the year for a lot of reasons: place in the standings, a good crowd on a week night, and division rival. Roddy didn't step up, so the canes lost. It's going to be hard to draw crowds like that down the stretch playing such uninspired hockey. They couldn't even get physical in the fourth to make a statement about their urgency, not even close. So we'll sink with roddy, i suppose, but unless this team starts next year 9-0 there is going to be renewed talk of the 'failed experiment in NC' very soon.
Brind'Amour Must Go
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 06:30 — abramsdougI agree, sadly, with the premise that Brind'Amour must go; although against the Panthers he seemed to be a non-factor rather than a key factor. It's simply time to move on in terms of team leadership. He's had a fantastic career and a career to be cherished; but it is time fo Brind'Amour to shut it down and let the younger, more determined players play.
UMMM...
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 03:16 — mdavidhallNot to be too nitpicky, and I understand this was a frustratingly bad loss so judgement/clarity might be a bit off in a rush to post, but...
Rod only missed two games on the west coast swing - he played in Vancouver, the one we lost.
And unless you were expecting something to break out on the way to the buses, not sure how they could have played more physical "in the fourth". BUt I understand your point completely.
This was a very disappointing effort from the Cane's overall. Once Florida got that third, and quickly after that a fourth, goal the Canes just seemed to pack it in. Sure, you might not come back from 4-0 down, but you also need to show a little more heart and fight than that on home ice in front of full house.
But I think you are on to something about the chemistry factor. This team seems to thrive on the jump and spark provided by the call ups, at least over a short span of games. I do not understand bringing Brind A'mour back for this game when you've just played two of your best games of the season without him. I for one would have preferred to see Petrusalek flying around for 6-7 minutes on the fourth line, stirring the pot and hustling, as opposed to watching Roddy skate through quicksand. But hey, that's just me. Call me crazy.
Still, you can't hang all of this on Bring A'mour. He was not on the ice enought to screw up that badly (besides, perhaps, the whole chemistry thing). Walin was terrible tonight. Gleason was a non factor. Ward never knew what hit him. Staal grew visibly more and more frustrated as the game wore on (can't say that I blame him really). With the exception of the Cullen line (and maybe Ruutu) in the first period, no one seemed to skate with much passion. The defense as a whole seemed to be out of sorts, though I thought Corvo and Rodney were, at times at least, our most solid players on this night. I have not looked at the stats to back that up, just the impression I got watching the game. We did get off over 40 shots on goal. Vokun was solid, and even spectacular on a few, but a lot of those shots were not exactly grade A chances. Florida basically cashed in on all of their quality chances.
Sigh. Let's just hope we put this one behind us immediately. There's still a lot of hockey to be played in a crowded lower half of the Eastern Conference. This team has shown what they can do when they bring the effort and intensity for 60 minutes. I guess that's what's so frustrating. This was a huge two points against a team that we only get one more crack at. The clock is ticking.

Karmamos is mostly to blame
Thu, 02/12/2009 - 23:57 — PowderedToastManYeah Karmanos--- nice job of bashing Lav beforfe re-hiring the same guy you fired for the same reason you fired Lav for. What has Maurice brought back to the team for? His two years experience losing in Toronto....yeah...nice coaching move.
AMEN
Fri, 02/13/2009 - 09:06 — Caniac324Laviolette should not have been fired if a retread of a past failure was the best option...JR should be next to go and the sooner he and Mo are gone the better.
Chemistry
Thu, 02/12/2009 - 22:31 — sanacitoI remember last year that the Canes were rolling towards the end without Roddy and Justin. They came back from their injuries and the Canes ended up on the golf course during the playoffs. Roddy is not the same player and the whole chemistry changes when he is in there. I hate it because he is such a class act but he isn't helping the Canes at all. And Justin isn't that far behind. These two players which have meant so much in the past need to be put up in the booth to watch the team move forward without them.
Pathetic
Thu, 02/12/2009 - 22:18 — abramsdougI was at the game. Pathetic. In the end, just as it was Laviolette's responsibility to get the team ready to play, it is Maurice's responsibility to have the Hurricanes prepared to play key games. Words cannot describe how ineffectual the team was tonight.
Biggest game of the year and
Thu, 02/12/2009 - 21:54 — dustinlammersBiggest game of the year and we come out flat, Vokoun will get some credit but we didn't have a good scoring chance all night. Our shut down D tandum (who have been very good as of late) went -4 from my count. We just didn't match the effort or intensity all night. Let's just hope Saturday a different team shows up.
Unbelievable
Thu, 02/12/2009 - 20:56 — CanenutNot even surewhat to say abaout being down 5-0, just glad I did not spend any of my hard earned money to watch this.
Good news for you, bad news for me.
Thu, 02/12/2009 - 22:44 — AN0NYM0USUnfotunately I did spend my hard earned cash for 2 tickets to watch the Canes lay an egg. When the Panthers did not roll over after our initial surge, and then scored twice in the first period, I knew we were in trouble. Then we failed to score on a good looking power play with plenty of chances--the game was, in effect, over at that point.
