SUNRISE, Fla. -- Steven Reinprecht gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at 5:09 of the third, tipping in a Cory Stillman shot. Stillman then added a power-play goal with 6:16 to play, and with Tomas Vokoun strong in net, Florida had all it needed.
The Panthers, gaining more energy and the game progressed, had several chances to add to the lead through the middle minutes of the third. Michael Frolik missed an open net. Gregory Campbell had a good look in front, and Kenndal McArdle.
A penalty on the Canes' Joni Pitkanen then led to the Panthers' second score. Stillman, always dangerous around the net, redirected the puck past Ward.
Bryan Allen scored an unassisted empty-netter with 2:01 remaining to make it the final score, 3-0.

In the second period, the Canes went to the penalty box -- time and again. Carolina picked up four penalties in a span of about nine minutes -- two by defenseman Tim Gleason, who returned after missing five games with an injury -- but killed them off.
Ward made a sure glove save on a hard shot by the Panthers' Nathan Horton on the third Florida power play, and Sutter had a short-handed chance on the fourth power play of the period.
With two minutes left in the second, the Canes swarmed around Vokoun. Chad LaRose and Matt Cullen swatted at the puck, but Vokoun would not relent.

The Canes dominated play in the first period -- and it's scoreless.
The Canes had three power plays. They had 21 shots, to the Panthers' four. Again, the Canes can't get anything in the net. Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun, coming off a shutout of St. Louis, has stopped everything. ...
When the Canes pounded the Panthers 7-2 on Oct. 9, who would have believed they would come to Florida on Nov. 4 looking for their next win?
No changes in pregame lines or defensive pairs. Brandon Sutter was the fourth-line center with Stephane Yelle and Tom Kostopoulos. ...
Former Cane defenseman Dennis Seidenberg has six assists for the Panthers. That tops Jussi Jokinen's team-high five for the Canes. ...
When the Canes beat the Panthers at the RBC Center, 12 players had points. Oddly, Eric Staal wasn't one of them. ...
Apparently the Panthers were offering some free tickets online to tonight's game. Well, let's call it 75 cents apiece. That was the Ticketmaster charge per ticket, but the tickets were at no cost. ...

trades?
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 14:28 — greg_98Which GM do you think will feel sorry for the canes and let us have a good power forward? There was talent aplenty in July but JR was bargain hunting or looking for a diamond in the rough.....shame it didnt work out
4th Line
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 04:55 — trooper95The game last night proves that our fourth line needs more ice time, (Yelle, K, & Sutter) created energy out there. This is really simple, Florida rolled four lines all night and giving our fourth line a few shifts every game is not factoring in , especially with Sutter. He has earned more ice time and I say give it to him. How can experience be attained when limited to 9 minutes of ice time for the entire game. Well let's see what will happen Friday, there have to be tough decisions made, the question is will (JR of PK) make them ?
Go Canes :~) !!
Sigh...
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 00:19 — esteban1949Speaking of the Rats...they too lost in a shut out...2-0...But at least the NY Yankees won !
Midnight
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 00:09 — WAStoutand they STILL have not fired Mo yet?
Geez. The other 29 would have fired him 3 games ago.
Sutter
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 23:12 — procellaeSutter with 9 minutes of ice time? The same Sutter who has scored all the goals in the past 3 games? Give this kid some play time already! IIRC, Forslund said he only got about 3 minutes of ice time in the first period, and also IIRC, every time he was on the ice, he got a good chance. He led the team in shots on goal. Yet despite being one of the best forwards we have right now, he is still only playing 9 minutes. After his game on Sunday, I was expecting him to move a line. Instead, he actually got a reduction in play time. Wow.
Hint to Mo (if he is still here on Friday): MOVE UP SUTTER.
Question for Mo
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 00:45 — drewpieceChip,
Could you please do us a favor and ask Mo why he gives one of the best players on the ice the least amount of ice time? I'd really love to know. Sutter is the only Canes player who is doing anything, and keeping him on the fourth line makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Sutter and Time on Ice
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 23:26 — abramsdougI agree completely that Sutter has earned far more ice time. His time according to the event summary was 10:28 total -- which included time on the penalty kill; but he was the best player on the ice. He makes very few mistakes and there are plenty of Hurricanes' veterans who need to go talk with Sutter about vision and decision-making. He also goes to the net and finds shooting lanes. I think in all four shots he took, he got the puck to the net. A Samsonov/Sutter/Walker line would make sense to me as well. Of course, what I would really like to see is a Samsonov/Sutter/Boychuk line. I think we ought to give Sutter and Boychuk a chance to see whether they can bring some spark to a team that is simply not producing.
Also, Brind'Amour had 18
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 15:16 — procellaeAlso, Brind'Amour had 18 minutes and did not register a single shot on goal. He is also -11 on the season (-2 last night).
Canes Country brought up a good point in their recap. Without Sutter, the Canes' veterans would have be shut out for 3 games in a row.
Misery continues...Coaching has nothing to do with it right JR!
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:50 — Mo_MiseryOh well as long as JR has his Best Friend to pal around with I guess things are JUST FINE!
Pretty good game...
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:43 — Biff_Beers... except for the whole not scoring any goals part.
Yeah, they didn't look bad
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:47 — ctillYeah, they didn't look bad in the first period -- except that nothing went in the net. And it wasn't like Vokoun was playing all that great. Then in the second period, the Canes took penalties. Then in the third period the Canes were flat while the Panthers were hungry. Other than that, not a bad game.
Good Lord. Dump salary,
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:41 — ctillGood Lord. Dump salary, bring up the kids from Albany, and hope for a top-three draft pick.
75 cent tickets in FL?
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:17 — wxray1At this rate, free may not get people into the RBC.
The season is basically over. The team will have to basically have a .650 average or so for the rest of the season. That will be extremely difficult to do. Last year, the Canes did about .540 (discarding OTL). The Sharks, best in league, were about .650.
That ain't gonna happen for the Canes this year.
!!!!!!!
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:09 — WAStoutCan we PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE fire Mo NOW!!
BEFORE we lose to the Leafs!!!!
Stay in Florida and coach the EVERBLADES!
RE:
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 11:27 — drailKeep in mind, the Canes are still paying Laviolette. I don't think its likely that JR wants to have 3 head coaches on the books.
Maurice, Francis and Jim Rutherford;
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 16:35 — abramsdougMy take is that there is a mismatch between some of the players and the Maurice/Francis style of play. The key to the Maurice/Francis style is attacking the puck and hard checking. That approach requires the forwards to generate offensive chances. Each forward has to take the beating of driving the net and attacking from the "dark places" in and around the net. Additionally, each forward has as much defensive responsibility as offensive responsibility. The approach rewards tough, hard-checking forwards like Ruutu; but is not necessarily every NHL player's cup of tea. At this point we have a mixed up team. Some players like Ruutu, Cullen, Jokinen, Gleason, Sutter, and Pitkanen seem to have adjusted to that system. Whitney seems to be the kind of cerebral and self-driven professional athlete who could adjust well to any coaching system. On the other hand, Aaron Ward, Brind'Amour, Wallin, and LaRose seem very, very uncomfortable; and are not showing particularly productive numbers thus far. Corvo seems to be struggling somewhat this year as well; but he seems more attuned to the system than some of the other players mentioned. Staal has been hurt, so I can't really judge how the system works for him. Some fans seem to believe Samsonov is not providing maximum effort, but I respectfully disagree. I think he is trying hard to step up his game and the play of others on his line. With a mismatch between players and coaches, something has to give -- either the mismatched players get traded or the coach is fired. I can't see Jim Rutherford firing the coach for a myriad of reasons; so I expect some trades soon. I do think if Jim Rutherford revamps the team and the team as revamped doesn't improve, he will have no choice but to find another coach. As a fan, my hope is that Maurice's system will work and that the team will improve this season and next season. Now that Sutter and Boychuk are both activated we should get an insight into whether or not their speed and quickness will allow them to take advantage of the strengths of the system. If Sutter and Boychuk shine, we can conclude part of the problem is an issue with some veterans of the Laviolette system not fully adhering to the Maurice/Francis system.
I haven't
Thu, 11/05/2009 - 07:36 — esteban1949checked yet, but i think the Everblades have a better record than the Canes do. Hmmmmm....gee that should make some of us fans wonder even more huh ?
Go Canes !
Obscenely Bad Team
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 22:08 — wi94rc2074This is an obscenely bad hockey team right now and there can truly be no excuse. There are too many good hockey players on this team for this kind of thing to happen. Now is a very good time to bring some of those young guns up from Albany and I am glad that Rutherford is on the market to make some trades.
We have a great bunch of guys on the team, but it is time to shake this group up. Guys have become too comfortable, and leadership on the ice is lacking. Fresh blood is needed and a new "C" as well. Brindy has been great, but time has passed him by in terms of leadership ability.
Another Game, Another Deflating Loss
Wed, 11/04/2009 - 21:52 — abramsdougIt isn't a season, it's a nightmare. If the comments by Jim Rutherford were not enough to get some productivity, then what else will?
