Ovechkin hit blindsides Legace

Bookmark and Share

Talk about blindside hits. Canes goalie Manny Legace said he has never been hit as hard in a game as when the Caps' Alex Ovechkin crashed into him Thursday night.

With eight minutes left in the second period and the Canes leading 2-1, Legace was positioning himself in the crease for a shot from the slot when Ovechkin swung from behind the net and put his shoulder and elbow into Legace's helmet.

"He hit me hard," Legace said today. "He came in and boom. He's like a freight train.

"I didn't see it, but I felt like he leaned in to hit me. I'd never been hit like that. I've had guys bump into me and try to get in front but never had a guy actually lean his shoulder into me like that."

Ovechkin, built like a linebacker at 6-2 and 233 pounds, was given a two-minute minor for goaltender interference and was booed by Canes fans the rest of the game. But where does such a play fit under the league's newly installed rule on intentional blindside hits to the head?

The rule calls for automatic review by the league and supplemental punishment includes a suspension or fine. As of Friday afternoon, there was no news or announcement concerning Ovechkin or whether the play was in question.

"I'm not going to call and complain to the league," Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today. "But there is a fine line there. Is it one of those types of hits or not? I will ask that question at some point."

Legace said he didn't expect Ovechkin to be suspended or fined for the hit.

"I didn't get hurt. If I had gotten knocked out and rolled around, maybe," he said, smiling.

Another concern, Legace said, was that he had to grab his helmet after the hit and make sure it didn't pop off with a shot about to come his way.

"If he had knocked my helmet off it could have been dangerous," Legace said.

Canes had to respond...

to that hit. I can't believe that someone on the team didn't skate down to the Caps' end and clip Varlamov. I'm not saying hurt the guy, but interfere with him a bit and clearly knock him down, take two minutes in the box and send a signal that "we're going to stand up for our guys."
It's a message that would be remembered next year when the games count again.

Touchy subject

Found out last night after reminding the Caps fan sitting next to me about #8's pattern of behavior that this is, uh, a touchy subject for their fans. HR is probably just a Cap troll.

I love Ovie's skill and energy. I know he plays with an edge, but he is gonna ruin a career or two if this pattern keeps up.

One season has ended

Brian Campbell.

like back pockets

on jeans each has the right to their own opinions...but HR I defey you to stand in goal and allow the same hit on you...I think you might sing a different tune..unless of course you think that hockey is for "girly men" ...do you ?

The Canes are Good,My Grandkids are Better, and Life is Great !!
Go Canes !!

Amen!!

You tell him Esteban!

Dove?

He dove? Good freaking grief. You get hit by a 6'2" 233 pound freight train with an intent to injure that you didn't see coming and see how well you stay on YOUR feet.

Not a Joke

I thought the same thing looking at it from a couple of angles. Then I got the chance to look at the video from two other angles. One clearly shows Ovie extend and clip him square. Subtle but pretty effective and no fun to get a blindside shot to the head. If you are going to lose respect, save that for Ovie.... I still think he is a tremendous player but he does play on the edge and his track record is starting to speak for itself.

Manny is a laid back and fun loving guy.... not typically his style to call someone out without cause.

What a joke!!

I just lost all respect for Manny. The guy freaking dove after the "hit" and has the nerve to suggest that it was a deliberate head hit and that it could go under review??
What a waste of oxygen....
But hey, thanks for the laugh.

a dive ?

Not sure which game you were looking at or what your state of mind was at the time , but to call that a dive is ricdiculos to say the least
