Canes general manager Jim Rutherford has yet to make any comments about the season, about missing the playoffs, about possible changes for next season.
Not that Rutherford has been reclusive. He attended Charlotte Checkers playoff games last week in Charlotte. So did coach Paul Maurice and his staff. All were visible and appeared relaxed as they watched games at Time Warner Cable Arena.
While interview requests have been made, the response has been that Rutherford still is going through his postseason evaluation process. It could be another week or two before he holds a press conference. ...
-- A number of people have asked about Maurice, and if the Canes failing to make the playoffs could lead to a coaching change. The feeling here is that nothing is off the table but that Maurice likely will return as coach.
The sense late in the season was that Maurice had done a commendable job with a younger team and with a brutal schedule -- enough to keep his job safe for next year. But the hugely disappointing loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the final game, costing the Canes a spot in the playoffs and a lot of money, could have changed all that.
There is no doubt Jeff Daniels has done a masterful job coaching the Charlotte Checkers this season. There seems to be little doubt he will one day be an NHL head coach. Should the Checkers win the Calder Cup, that may be sooner rather than later.
But next season, as the Canes' head coach? That may be rushing things.
-- Rod Brind'Amour may have an expanded role in the organization next season. Brind'Amour was the Canes' director of forward development last year.
-- That the Checkers' Nicolas Blanchard scored the goal that finished off the Hershey Bears in the opening round of the Calder Cup playoffs was a big hit with his teammates. As goaltender Mike Murphy put it, "It made it 10 times better."
Blanchard is one of those unsung types who do the dirty work and get little of the glory. He's also one of the players who was in the harrowing Albany River Rats bus crash in February 2009 and suffered severe lacerations.
"Everything he does on and off the ice, he's always working so hard," forward Nick Dodge said. "He stands up for his teammates and plays a real solid defensive game. To get a big goal like that, everybody feels great about it."
Blanchard scored at 1:30 of overtime in Game 6 to give the Checkers a 2-1 win, taking a pass from Dodge in front and backhanding a shot. It came about 10 seconds after he jumped on the ice, after he noticed Oskar Osala had missed his shift and the Checkers were a man down.
"He was alert and on his toes and jumped out there," Dodge said. "He really made a great play and it was a really good finish on that goal."

Fri, 04/29/2011 - 10:54 — hellfishIt's really simple if the PP/PK are not both top 10-12 ,make the coaching change ,the team can't make the next step with being in the 20's with both ,and JR has got to address the face-off disadvantage as a TOP priority as well...3 KEY area's that MUST improve to make this team a serious contender.
Charlotte Attendance
Thu, 04/28/2011 - 18:12 — WAStoutThe question is...was JR and Mo all sitting together? That would pretty much answer it for me. We're stuck with him if they were.
I am all for giving him 20-25 games next year...but JR better not hesitate to axe him if we stumble....he did to Lavi after 2 seasons of no playoffs, and that man helped bring the Cup!
Or if we are at risk of losing Daniels in the off-season for any reason. Buh-bye Mo.
Commendable job this season? We tend to forget the complete body of work which includes last season's debacle including the 14-game losing streak.
Again, let's see if he's learned anything...but after 14 seasons....I doubt it.
Decisions need to be made...
Thu, 04/28/2011 - 16:39 — louis12580with regards to the make-up of net seasons team. Part of that is going to Charlotte and seeing the players who they feel will be here next year and how those players are progressing. Much of what the 'Canes do is predicated on Dalpe, and Boychuck and how they are faring. There will be discussions concerning those drafted last year and when they think those players might be ready to be signed. While many here focus on the here and now we must remember that 3-5 years down the road is just as, or even more, important. Free agents now, and next year play a vital roll in any decision making as well. Ruutu, Corvo, and Gleason head up next years free agents from this club. Maybe they're evaluating the coaching staff as presently constituted as well. One thing we can count on is an honest assessment from Jim
Jim Rutherford and Decisions to Come
Thu, 04/28/2011 - 17:18 — abramsdougI admire the way that Jim Rutherford will say in a quiet way what he means. I take the silence to mean he is still evaluating things and waiting until the emotion of the last game's loss fades a little. In other words, I don't see Jim Rutherford holding a press conference until he feels he is comfortable with the plans he has in place. I also suspect he does not want to sap any energy from or attention away from the Checkers.
There are some difficult decisions that are to come for Jim Rutherford and the Hurricanes organization. I look forward to hearing what he has in mind for 2011-2012 and beyond.
I suspect he is focusing on
Fri, 04/29/2011 - 09:39 — HockeydogI suspect he is focusing on the Checkers run as well. While not favored, they have a legitimate shot at the Cup. I would love to be a fly on the wall and hear the conversations between JR and MO as they watch the Checkers. Is it purely exchanging ideas on who might be ready and in what role, or is it JR wanting Mo's take on who he wants and how he intends to use them. With a number of pretty exciting young players on the verge of making the leap I'd want to know how my coach intends on using them if I was JR.
