No Canes' staff changes expected

Bookmark and Share

An announcement on the Hurricanes' coaching staff should be made in the next few days, general manager Jim Rutherford said today, and it is expected the staff will remain intact.

Rutherford met last week with team owner Peter Karmanos, Jr., in Detroit.

"We'd like to keep everything together and the way it was at the end," Rutherford said of the staff.

Paul Maurice replaced Peter Laviolette as head coach Dec. 3, leading the Canes to their first playoff appearance since 2006 and series victories over New Jersey and Boston. Ron Francis was named associate head coach, with Tom Rowe and Kevin McCarthy serving as assistant coaches and Tom Barrasso as the goaltending coach.

Rutherford said Francis enjoyed going behind the bench for the first time while continuing to work with Rutherford and team vice president Jason Karmanos on player-development issues and decisions.

"He does a lot of things for us on top of coaching," Rutherford said. "We need to keep all those things in order. I'd like to figure out a way, if there is a way, to not put too much on his plate."

Asked if Francis would remain as associate head coach, Rutherford said, "I believe so."

Rutherford said he had just begun to contact the agents representing the Canes' free agents. He said he still is not sure if the NHL salary cap of $56.7 million will dip a bit this season, although the Hurricanes remain a "budget team."

"Trying to fit them all in will be difficult and I do not know that we can fit in everybody," he said. "It's a juggling act."

I'm surprised by that

I'm surprised that no staff changes are expected. It's good to have a change once in a while when results are not heading your way. Nobody is indispensable but one should be hired based on their merits and ask to leave if they're not performing up to expectations.

The least I would do would be to give the existing management a big pay cut and promise to reinstate them when things turnaround.

Call me crazy, but...

I think we should trade Joe Corvo. He is in (next season) the final year of his contract, in his prime, and everyone is always looking for a "puck-moving, offensive defenseman." His value is high right now. Use him to in a deal to move up in the draft (we currently pick 27th) along with a depth player/prospect. I think it would be a mistake to let Seidenberg go...

I think the Canes should do the following:

Trade Corvo to move up in the draft and add a depth forward or decent prospect.

Let Cole and Bayda walk.

Re-sign (in order of importance) LaRose, Jokinen/Ruutu, Seidenberg, Babchuck.

Go after Mike Komisarek from Montreal. BIG, physical, young and tough. He's like Scott Walker but bigger and playing D.

Brandon Sutter should be a lock for the big-boy team this year, and I think we have enough offense. But we need to get bigger, meaner, and younger especially on the backline. Carson, Bowman, Boychuck and Borer deserve a real hard look in camp. I would be fine with any of these guys filling the gaps left by the departure of Cole, Bayda, and Corvo.

boychuk has a better chance

boychuk has a better chance then sutter to make the team. already have 4 centers, plus boychuk has much more offensive potential.

trading corvo  for a depth forward. we already have about 10 depth forwards in our top 12. only staal and whitney are officially top guys, ruutu and samsonov are questionable top line guys.

disagree on Sutter

I feel Sutter will be on this club next year. 4 centers will be Staal, Cullen, Brind'Amour and Sutter, with Jokinen playing the wing (which is where he belongs IMO).

Sutter brings SIZE down the middle. He is a cerebral player that brings effort each shift. I agree that Boychuck has more offensive potential, but the size and hustle you get from Sutter is more valuable to this team. He is familiar with the team, the city, and the locker room. And he is ready. Provided we are able to keep Larose and Jokinen this team has plenty of offense. Boychuck would be another small forward-not what we need right now.

Rutherford isn't gonna bring in a "first-line" forward, and rightfully so. No need to overspend on high-priced offensive free agents. Those players can be drafted and make a relatively quick impact (Staal, Cole, etc...) Spend your free agent $$ on young but developed defensemen and on the guys that have proven they can play for you (LaRose, Jokinen, Ruutu.) Every forward can't be a "top guy". You have to have the role players...

its hard to get a young

its hard to get a young developed defensmen in FA most all UFA are 30 and older, jbo is 25 but out of our price range. Staal was the 2nd pick in the draft so of course he could help quick. but cole didnt even make any impact until he was about 23. he was a 3rd round pick though so any impact is good. And keeping larose and jokinen doesnt do much for the offense, larose had 19 goals but it will be hard for him to reach that number ever again, he doesnt have many pure goals, like whitney and staal with the wristers and one timers. most of his are junk goals.

Jokinen had the best face off percentage other the brindy during the playoffs, so i dont know why he would be losing his spot there.

also were not going to be picking in the top 5 again for a while. we will continue to get boychuks and sutters, solid guys but probably not first line scoring guys. specially since JR always takes the safe route, which is a good thing because we had so many busts in the late 90's early 2000's thats why we sucked forever

I don't think 30 is too old...

but you are correct-it is hard to find developed defensemen, but there are quite a few UFA available that would certainly fit our needs. I would love to see Komisarek, Scuderi, or Boynton here. Either would fill the need (that is if we agree that a bigger, crease-clearing, banging, stay-at-home defenseman is the need) better than Corvo. Trade away his contract to help free up $$ to sign this elusive player, and move yourself up in the draft to have a better chance of a higher impact player. Based on the limited ammount of research I've seen it looks like a pretty stary drop-off after about the 15th spot. Moving Corvo could get you into that 9-13 spot and grab a valuable player.

As for the Sutter/Jokinen debate: I still feel Sutter should be up her and spend at least a year sitting next to Brind'Amour in the locker room. Other than faceoffs and defensive assignments "center" is just a another forward. I like Sutter's size down the middle and Jokinen's speed and creativity on the wing. Sutter is gonna be a good player for this team and he is ready to be a NHL regular. That's why Jokinen could "lose" his spot as a center IMHO.

And LaRose-I think last year was his breakout season. He was always a gifted offensive player in juniors and minors. His production this season was a result of preparation meeting opportunity, and with the security of a new contract and the added responsibility and opportunity that goes with it he could be a 25-30 goal scorer for this team.

Both of you

have valid points that i can see have merit. Yet it is my hope that what ever JR & the Bench does in the ways of moves, trades and etc., it will only serve to help the Canes be a even better team than the canes were in the first half of last season....If we all sadly remember while the canes were decent, the canes lack one or players...the canes got Cole & Jokinen...But also be reminded that no matter what the front office does, there will always be some of us fans who will once again...call for the head and entrails of JR for making such a screwed up mess, but somehow forgot all of that when the canes beat NJ & Boston in the playoffs...So we just wait, hope, and pray that what changes are going to come, will despite some pain and tears, will help tha canes next season, be just as good if not more so than the Canes were so that the posibilty of the Canes playing for the cup in 09-10 season will be a reality, and not a dream. Opening game is when ?????

Go Canes !!!

Esteban

It's a long hot summer Esteban with no ice in sight!  I am already in withdrawal.  When do you think we will begin hearing anything from JR?

Dear Ammy144

i really don't think we'll hear anything from JR unless he says something just before they leave to attend the entry draft. If not then it will be after. But persoanlly, I'd hope we'd at least hear that the staff behind the bench is or has been resigned and starting to look over who they have, where they want to go, who to trade and who is that player or 2 the Canes need to make yet another run into the playoffs and for the silly, but oh so beloved cup that is currently in the grubby paws of the Pens...Personally if was me as in If i was the GM...right after everyone clean out their lockers...exit interviews over & all that, I'd ask Mo do you want to return ?? but before you answer, go home sleep for a couple of days...be with your family and talk it over with them. I'd do the same thing with Francis & Rowe and everyone else..and then keep my eyes open to see who is out there the canes Might possibly add and etc...Then after i had the bench in order...then I'd be on the horn to agents of the key players the canes want to keep really well, and start the talks just before training camp invites go out. But that's just me. Who knows dear sister...JR might or could be doing just that...only he and the hockey gods know for sure. have a safe week.and i already have my calender marked off as each day goes by like i'm a convict in prison waiting for the day i get out !!Now i have signed up for and on the Hurricane website to join them over there...but have yet have had the time to go & get back there to see and chat as of yet.

have a safe & sane week !!  I know,,,I know..i too am in withdrawl...:-)

Go Canes !!

Sutter

I also think Sutter is (should be) a lock for this roster next year.  He is the heir apparent to the 'defensive minded center' hole that will be there when Rod retires.  It will benefit the whole organization to have Sutter & Rod on the team together for as many games as possible in 09-10.  He was already showing MUCH promise in that role, particularly on the PK as the first half of the season went on.  He should also be a bit more filled out physically next year.

It's also obvious that JR won't be spending big money on new FA's... he's going to have to empty out the wallet just to keep this team looking relatively similar to last year (LaRose, Jokinen & Ruutu, perhaps Cole if the price is right).

Moving up in the draft?

There's no need to trade up from #27 to get a 'depth forward'.  After the first two picks this year, it's largely going to be a crap shoot, from what I'm seeing (not like last year where there were half a dozen STUD [i.e. played in 2008-09 in the NHL] defensemen that went right after Stamkos).

I think that Corvo (or Sieds),both entering or at their prime, are worth more than moving from the bottom to the middle of the1st round.  JR's simply not going to get a top 5 pick for either one of them.

Boychuck is not going to fill the Bayda/Cole role... he's a small fast forward in the Kapannen/Samsonov mold.  Carson impressed in camp last year, and I could see him as the answer @ #6/#7 next year.  Borer is not going to EVER move the puck the way Corvo does.

I think Corvo could

fetch somwhere in the 8-13 range, and there are some darn good players at the top half of the first round this year. I'm not saying Corvo for a depth forward-I'm saying Corvo for a higher pick AND a prospect/depth "player". The point of the trade would be to help free up $$ for a bigger, badder, meaner defenseman (Komisarek) and move up enough in the draft to pick a player with a better chance of making a quicker impact that someone drafted at #27.

The problem I have with Corvo is his unwillingness to use his body (I have the same problem with Babchuck.) We need to get bigger and meaner on the back end. To me, Corvo does not fit that bill, he's UFA after next season, and his value is high right now.

agreed that boychuk doesnt

agreed that boychuk doesnt fill coles shoes as far as size or physical play. but i've heard hes exactly like larose with skill, to a lesser degree then samsonov.

Hmm..

Not a bad idea trading Corvo. I would be sad to see him leave but your logic makes sense. There were many rumors around the trade deadline about Corvo being a bargaining chip. I am interested in Francious Bochimean (lord knows that is probably spelled wrong) or Travis Moen from Anaheim. Both are free agents and could really help in the defensive game.

Hockeyhick & Irbefan

i too am surprised at what both of you said, but in looking at the oh so large big picture, what you both said makes alot of sence on paper as well as on the ice. And for many fans, including myself, seeing Corvo go would be a tough one, But again, i see where you both are going with this...and Ammy is right...there are too many day until the start of the season !!!

And if either of you think this is tough just trying to keep up with the canes...i also keep tabs on the following teamsas well : The Albany River Rats,The Lethbridge Hurricanes, The Spokane Chiefs, The Plymouth Whalers, and a couple of ECHL teams too... So in a sense, i am up to my armpits in Hockey. That is why i was somewhat disappointed when there was no real news or interviews of any of the Black Aces who were in town during the Cane's Run for the cup, as i felt seeing they were there, surely someone from the sports dept. could have asked at least one or 2 of them a question or 2...and say like now & do like a small end of the year ( like the exit interviews)  wrap up...but seeing i am NOT a news reporter...what would i know ? Enjoy the rest of the week...

Go Canes !!

Oh believe me, I would hate

Oh believe me, I would hate to see Corvo leave. I think he is a heckuva player with a lot of upside to him. I'm just saying he is a juicy bit of trade bait. I would love to see a top-tier guy come in and fill a spot on the top line. Imagine for a moment that he get Bill Guerin (not saying I want him)...

Cole - Staal - Guerin

LaRose - Brindamour - Ruutu

Whiney - Cullen - Samsonov

Walker - Jokinen - Eaves

Can you say stacked?!?!?!?

Good plan brewing ...

Appears that the plan is as planned.
Keep'em together and let them play together even more - can you imagine what a power duo Jokinen and Ruutu are going to be come new ice ! Only an idiot would separate those two.

coaching moves and free agents

One of the underlying plusses of keeping the coaching staff in tact is the message it sends to the possible free agents. The players seemed to have enjoyed playing for the coaches. Mo and company knew when to crack the whip and when to back off. There was a sense of calm and that translated into a better team performance. As for re-signings, Chad, Tuomo, Jussi head the list. Dennis and Erik follow and Ryan is replaceable. Who knows what Jim has up his sleeve as he tends to keep everything close to the vest ( how's that for use of metaphors?). Look forward to a positive summer from the front office and can't wait for the lads to lace them up!

On a Different Subject

The new HD scoreboard is being installed this week at the RBC. Can't wait to see it in action. How many more days till opening night.

TOO MANY!!!!!!!

I hate summer!

Yo Ammy

esteban pulls himself back into his powerchair  as he fell out laughing at Ammy's responce...well dear sister, i has to agree with you, but trust me...as fast as the first 6 months of 2009 has come and all but gone...training camp will soon be here, and before you know it the 2009-2010 season will begin...but yes...aside from all the idols speculations and etc...for the Canes, there really isn't any real hard news or information just yet...and Yes...then time does drag and go by Oh...Soooo

Sloooowwww!!! Like forzen molassas in Alaska in January...Now that is slow huh ? Hang in there !!

Go Canes !!

Well Now

There are no real "surprises" there...but it will be very very interesting to see who is resigned and who is traded. Speaking of Rosie...my New Canes Jersey with Chad's name and number arrived this morning...I forgot just how sharp those 3rd sweaters really looked...sharp...very sharp !
Go Canes !!

Start organizing a "black

Start organizing a "black out" for every time they wear them at home.

hey Fink03

great idea...guess it be time to pass it on!! Thanks...enjoy the rest of your week,Be & Play Safe !!

Go Canes !!

black out

Bad idea. Cam said a black out would interfere with his ability to track the puck when it's in the air.

good point.  O well, I'll

good point.  O well, I'll go back to my other idea of having an exibition game in Charlotte.

Agreed!

Agreed.

I always felt that black home uniforms gave teams like the Bruins and Penguins an advantage.  The opposing goaltender could lose track of the puck against the black uniforms.

Gee I

never really thought about that...sigh...and yes...I wouldn't want to contribute to Cam's possible problems...too bad the NHL couldn't say put a strip of reflective tape or something...heck even with White Jerseys the puck is hard to keep up with at times...Well thanks for the remember folks...on paper it looked like a good idea...but you are right...in practice...No no...

Go Canes !!

coaching staff

I'm glad to see the Canes are keeping the coaching staff the same. More pressure will be on Coach Mo to make the playoffs again. This team can. As far as resigning players, different story. Get rid of Kaberle, Wallin, Bayda. Don't know if Dennis will be back. Wants to test market. Sign Tuomo, Jussie, can't afford not too. With all the young talent in Albany and the free agent signings this past year, this team will be fine. As far as resigning Cole big question? 4 million is enough for him no more.

cant move kabs, wallin has

cant move kabs, wallin has NTC. and bayda is FA but is a solid 4th liner.

move eaves if anything. If heard kabs is going to KHL.

seidenberg is surely the odd man out.

i hope they let cole and jokinen go and sign a real 1st liner.

pssst...clementnorman

i wouldn't say that too loud...as and while some would agree that maybe cole my be too high priced to keep, but for many fans as well as several of the coachs the juice has become a good part of of the canes iner workings...despite him just being with the canes for what ? 4-5 months ? for a player to jump in and do that, and fill in and had very decent & good stats for that short period of time shows the staff & front office that they have a valuable asset. But you and everyone else has the right to their own opinions, but still, as one fan to another I wouldn't say that too loud !but again, that's up to you!! How's your Blue Cross & Blue Shield Coverage ?
