Canes coach Kirk Muller was hoping to have goaltender Cam Ward available for Thursday's game against the Anaheim Ducks, but that apparently will not be the case.

The Canes have again recalled goalie Mike Murphy from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL). Murphy's recall is on an emergency basis for Ward.

It's the third NHL recall for Murphy, 23. He was recalled Sunday, served as the backup to Justin Peters in Monday's game against the Washington Capitals, then was reassigned Tuesday.

Murphy is 15-11-1 with a 2.71 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage in 29 games for the Checkers this season. He made his NHL debut during his first recall, Dec. 6 at Calgary.
