Mormina signs with Penguins

Bookmark and Share

Minor-league defenseman Joey Mormina, who played one game for the Canes last season, has signed with the Penguins.

This isn't big news at the NHL level, but Mormina's departure is big news for Albany (AHL). Phil Janack, who covers the Rats for the (Schenectady, N.Y.) Daily Gazette, sums it up thusly in his blog:

He was rock solid on the blue line, particularly when the team was ravaged by injury and recall, and logged incredible minutes in the top pairing throughout the first-round series with Philadelphia. He was easy-going, well-liked and respected in the room, even serving as one of Albany's rotating captains toward the end.

Here's who the Canes have on two-way contracts on defense right now:

Tim Conboy
Bryan Rodney
Casey Borer
Brett Carson
Noah Babin
Brett Bellemore
Mark Flood (RFA)

Unforutnately it's a 2 way

Unforutnately it's a 2 way contract with the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins not a one way contract with Pittsburgh.

Definiely one that would

Definiely one that would have been nice to keep in the back pocket, but good for him to get a chance in the NHL.

joey mormina

wasn't he their number D man; and isn't he better than what they have in the AHL?
