Monday's debate: Training camp

Bookmark and Share
Tags: Canes Now

Finally, September. The Hurricanes' training camp is on the horizon, no longer so distant.

With that in mind, what is the most compelling question or issue heading into training camp on Sept. 19? Rod Brind'Amour's rebuilt knee? Matt Cullen's vision?

Joni Pitkanen and the new look on the blue line? Jeff O'Neill's attempt at a comeback? Brandon Sutter's possibilities?

In looking at the Canes, do they have all they need to win the division this season? If not, what's lacking?

The floor is officially open this Labor Day Monday.

Improve this year

Rutherford short changed every fan in the house last year and he knew it based on the defensemen he started and ended the season with - they were weak beyond belief. If he was man enough to swallow his pride he could have gotten Babchuk back from Russia at any point last season but did not.

Laviolette looked like he ran out of coaching gas last season and was randomly throwing combinations on the ice hoping for a miracle - something any fan could have done for far less than a million a season. If this team is 500 or below by end of November then he needs to be sent packing (and replaced by Ted Nolan).

No doubt that Cam has to be

No doubt that Cam has to be better in the pipes, he had some bad games last season something he acknowledged. I think the Canes need to be the same core team that they have been but I remember they could play offense and defense on 05-06. Lately it seems like the team can play offense or defense.

We have to remember now this is a really different team from last year. A team that has been stung having the chance to determine their own destiny and giving it up 2 years in a row. There was no doubt they were going to the playoffs last year, and they might say they have to leave it behind, but it still stings and they still want to prove themselves.

Issues

Much like everyone else, one of my biggest concerns is Cully. It was a rough injury and everyone is aware of the uncertainty that surrounds any head injury. However, no one can deny the impact he has when he is healthy. Lord knows, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for that.

My second issue is Ward. I really like Ward and certainly have nothing but respect for what he did for the team during the Stanley Cup run....however, his play since has (to say the least) left me less than wowed. I know D has been a problem but unless you can manage to stop the occasional puck from a breakaway or (god love him) a shoot out, I just don't see him as a viable number 1, especially considering what a big part of the game the shoot out has become. Imagine where we would have been last year if he had at least been able to hold his own in a shoot out.

My last major concern is defense. I know that Rutherford felt like we needed more help at the point and wanted more offense from our defense but I've never been convinced that scoring was our problem. DEFENSE is our problem so I'm not sold on how adding a bunch of offensive defensman to our blueline is going to remedy our lack of defense. Our defense needs to be more defensive and our forwards need to pay more attention to the game going on around them. Also, a good point was made by an earlier commenter, what happens if (god forbid) Gleason, our only truly solid blueliner, gets injured???? Yikes!

This season

I have a lot of questions this year, but I'm feeling very optimistic about the season. Here's what I'm wondering:

1. How will Jeff O'Neill impact our roster, if at all? Assuming he has a good training camp, will the Canes sign him? Rutherford said that he doesn't see signing Jeff as a 4th line player, yet his comments also make it clear that he would like to have some insurance in place for the center position in case of injuries. If O'Neill outplays one of our top 9 forwards and earns a contract, won't that mean we'll have to trade someone, probably a winger? And, who would that be? I'm gonna bet that Ryan Bayda has a strong camp either way, cause I don't think he's interested in playing in Albany again.
2. Will we have room on the roster to carry either Brookbank or Conboy? We seem to need someone willing to fight, but who do you cut in favor of one of these guys. Both guys should be working hard right about now to make this decision easy for the Hurricanes.
3. How will Matt Cullen look in camp? Everyone loves Matt, but I think we'll all be holding our breath until he takes his first big hit and shows no ill effects.
4. Will Eaves and/or Ruutu step up their production and show why they were 1st rounders?
5. Will Babchuk and Melichar play like legitimate NHLers or will they struggle to readjust to the NHL? If both of these guys are busts, we might be in trouble.
6. Will Kaberle be traded?
7. In general, how will our new defense gel and will they be able to get the job done?
8. What will happen to David Tanabe? Hopefully, things will work out for him and the team.
9. How will Michael Leighton handle being an NHL backup (again)?

I also have a few predictions.
1. Niclas Wallin will have a good season. Now that there are some defensemen on the team that can take more minutes, he can concentrate his energy on what he does best-defense. I think he'll respond to the fact that he is the veteran presence on our blueline. Some Canes fans discount Nic's locker room presence and his overall skill level. I expect him to have a solid, effective season.
2. Dennis Seidenberg will have a solid year and we'll all be happy that he was retained.
3. Cam Ward's numbers as a starter will get better as he grows into the job.
4. Pitkanen and Corvo will give help us to become one of the top power plays in the league again.
5. Justin Williams, Rod Brind'Amour, and Ray Whitney will be in peak condition for the start of the season and we'll soon forget that they all suffered significant injuries last season.
6. Jeff O'Neill will not be signed by the Canes.
7. The Hurricanes will make the playoffs but will make at least 4 trades involving NHL players between now and the trade deadline.

main concerns: Penalty

main concerns:

Penalty Kill... you have to be able to kill penalties no matter how good ovechkin or lecavalier is. -- no penalty kill, no playoffs. period.
Power Play. unless we have a good power play all season, no playoffs--so I guess Cullen's health fits into this
Defense: A lot of people are worried about this, but let's just trust the GM... he knows what he's doing. (i hope)
Focus: We need Staal to just pick up where he left off last season and just for the whole team in general to stay focussed. a lot of people don't think we can win the division and make noise in the playoffs, and we just need to ignore that.
and... we could all be concerned that because of the higher ticket prices the building will not be as full/loud. so, lets just sell out the RBC and make some noise, caniacs!!!

... GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!

Training Camp

Thank the Hockey Gods that the season is almost here, I can see the light at the end of the long off season tunnel. I think the issues going into training camp will be the following. 1) Cullen... is he truely healthy? And can we expect any type of lingering effects later on in the season if he plays. Brindy will be okay with his knee this season, we all know he's in good shape for a player his age and that is a key factor in his return. 2) We need stronger Defense, if we can get our D-Line players to get out there and play smart and agressive we can fair better off this season, than playing the numbers game like we did towards the end of last season. 3) Staying healthy, if we can avoid major injuries then we've got a strong chance this season. 4) The question on everyone's mind the past few months.. what is our 4th line gonna look like this season. 5) Focus Focus Focus... They need to go into the start of the season (including the preseason) with the same attitude that won us the cup in 06 "WHATEVER IT TAKES !!"

**Can't wait for the Caniac Carnival for the Red & White scrim game, it will be nice to see some live hockey for a change instead of playing NHL08 **

Questions to be answered...

1. For me, a huge question is Cam. Other than the '06 Cup run, he's shown zero consistency as a #1 in this league. The organization made a huge commitment to him, & he MUST deliver this year.

2. Our D obviously has to improve, which would help Cam out a lot. I'm excited about Corvo & Pitkanen, especially on the PP. It's a big year for Gleason in terms of becoming a reliable anchor. But who else can step into the top 4? Kaberle (one-hit wonder of '05-06 who still may well be moved), Wallin (a career 3rd pairing guy), & Melichar (3rd pairing talent at best) aren't likely. So that leaves us w/ Seidenberg or Babchuk needing a breakthrough season.

3. Cullen's injury is a major concern. I'm actually surprised at how little attention this situation has gotten on this blog. Without him anchoring the 3rd line, we become A LOT easier to defend up front. With Brind'Amour a year older & coming off his injury, and a young Brandon Sutter being all-but-promised a roster spot before(?) camp, there are a lot of questions at center ice.

4. Coach Laviolette has to recapture the intensity of '05-06, or he'll be gone by December. No excuses. Missing the playoffs 2 straight years after winning it all is absolutely humiliating. Just as Laviolette & the team leaders (Brind'Amour) got a ton of praise for winning the Cup, they must shoulder a lot of the blame for our costly periods of lethargy over the past two seasons.

*The Jeff O story is interesting to me, but I don't think it's a huge story coming into camp. With all the questions at center ice, though, I think it'd be wise to sign him to a 2-way deal if he looks good in camp.

That said, if Cam finally proves himself, if the D comes together, if Cullen returns to form, & if Coach gets his mojo back, this team has a really good shot at taking the division & making a good run in the playoffs!

training camp questions

1. Is Cullen healthy?

2. Who is on the 4th line? My guess is Bayda-Sutter-LaRose. However, I'd rather see Eaves-Cullen-LaRose as 3A and Bayda-Sutter-Walker as 3B.

3. Who, in addition to Staal and Whitney, wears an "A"? I vote for Scott Walker.

To answer your 3rd question

No one else gets an 'A'. Normally its 1 captain and 2 alternates. The only reason we had 4 alternates last year was so they could get Staal involved without having to take the 'A' from Wesley or Stillman. If one of Brind'Amour, Staal, or Whitney are out, I'm sure Walker will be the fill in as he was at times this past year.

Gleason as stay-at-home is

Gleason as stay-at-home is fine with me. Sure, Pitkanen wants to get into the offense and that's the best use of his ice time. But if Gleason gets hurt, either Pitkanen or Corvo will have to play stay-at-home. Wallin isn't quick enough.

Gleason Injurred?

I don't think Gleason can get injurred - the dude is a tank!

You know what, just take this website and swap every occurance of Chuck Norris' name for Tim Gleason.

 http://www.chucknorrisfacts.com/

Counting on Corvo to be a

Counting on Corvo to be a stay-at-home defenseman is out of the question.  There's a reason he was called 'uh-oh joe' in Ottawa- his defensive blunders.  Corvo is a great puck-moving defenseman with a wicked point shot, but he isn't a great defensive defenseman.  He's not at all a physical defenseman either.  Really the only decent shut down defenseman we have, IMO is Gleason.  Hopefully Melichar can step it up, but I doubt it.  And Wallin and Kaberle...no.  Seidenberg...maybe

Seidenburg is stacked now

Upon sight of Seidenburg recently at Camp Brind'amour - he appears to have gained some bulk (muscles that is, not the Pavel Brendl offseason diet.)

He can do some shutting down but also chip in offensively.

Wallin

Wallin certainly isn't an offensive or puck-moving defenseman like Corvo.  If he isn't quick enough to be a stay at home defenseman what is he good for?

nothing, really... but we

nothing, really... but we can always hope that he'll have a better season...

1 - Eric Stall must eclipse

1 - Eric Stall must eclipse 100 points again.
2 - Cam Ward MUST improve from the 32nd rated goalie in the league in the GAA & SV% categories.
3 - Multiple 20 goal scorers, Staal obviously, Williams, Whitney, LaRose, Ruutu, Samsonov et al must score to their capabilities!
4 - Defense must contribute offensively on the PP, and lock them down on the PK.
5 - Cullen needs to be 100%.
6 - Leighton needs to play 25 to 30 games so Cam doesn't get overworked, and he needs to win 18 to 25 of those!
7 - Overall the team needs to stay healthy and injury free. GET YOUR FLU SHOTS THIS YEAR BOYS!!!!!!!

Canes Need

1. Stay healthy
2. For the regulars to play at their pre-injury abilities.
3. For a defence that can help Cam & Mike there in goal.
4. For the team to stay focused.

other than that...all we can do is hope ...and pray...

Go Canes !!

Pitkanen stay-at-home?

Pitkanen stay-at-home? That's not at all what we brought him to Raleigh for.

I think one intriguing question is: can Tuomo Ruutu fill the role that Erik Cole played on the top line with Staal?

No and why should we expect

No and why should we expect him to replace Eric? To much expectations if you have him replacing Eric's capabilities...

Rutherford's counting on him

Rutherford's counting on him to.  Someone has to take that slot, who else would it be?

Coles Points

I think it's fair to speculate that JR was looking to acquire candidates to pick up Cole (and Stillman's) points last season.  Look at the two forwards he picked up (and signed to multi-year deals earlier in the summer prior to 'The Trade'): Samsonov and Eaves.

Patrick Eaves is young and has significant pontential upside, if he can stay healthy.  He had 20G/9A in 58 games in his rookie season.  I agree that a Ruutu-Staal-Samsonov line would be fun to watch, and tough to play against, and the way Laviollette is willing to play with the lines, we will probably see that at some point during the season.

Let's not also forget the chemistry the Sammy/Brindy had before Feb14.

Looking at the Canes' site depth chart (for what it's worth)

Whitney-Stall-Williams

Samsonov-Brind'Amour-Eaves

Ruutu-Cullen-Walker

LaRose-Sutter-Bayda

I could certainly see a swap of Williams/Eaves at some point, as Williams has played well with Rod, too.

I don't think Rutherford

is counting on Ruutu to take over Cole's points. That job would be more suited for Samsonov. I think Rutherford is counting on Ruutu to bring that physical element to Staal's line.

Imagine a line of Samsonov-Staal-Ruutu. If Ruutu is out there bringing that physical element, it opens the ice for Staal and Samsonov to do their thing.  Samsonov has some deadly puck handling abilites that he can use that talent to give Staal enough time to get opened. Staal has some good accuracy, so as long as he is open, he can hit the back of the net.

Canes have to

Main thing is stay healthy. We have guys that can score and a solid goaltender, if we can just keep them on the ice together. We also have a defense that has potential. They just need to learn to play together and build as a unit. The division is realistic but some good luck has to come the Canes way.

Pitkanen is a true offensive

Pitkanen is a true offensive defenseman, so he will not be "staying at home" any time soon. Gleason is going to have to be that guy. The only other guy who could be that guy is Wallin, but I can't see him doing it at this point in his career.

I look to the training camp battle for the second 6 forwards. With O'Neill and Sutter coming in, we have a few extra bodies for the position.

Canes Needs

Pitkanen isn't a 'stay-at-home' player- he's an offensive d-man, so folks will be disappointed if they're expecting that type of player.

So the biggest health question for me, is Matt Cullen. head injuries are nothing to play around with- and as much as I hope that he's better like he has said in interviews over the summer.

The biggest question for the Canes is how they will re-group and come back hungry from the humiliation being out of the playoffs for 2 straight years after winning it all; and the fact that the Capitals have stolen some thunder as an 'exciting team'. All of that comes into play as the new season starts in just a matter of weeks.

The so-called national media has already counted the Canes out; throwing all their 'love' to WSH, I'm hoping this is similar to 05-06 when we were picked to finish last.

We all know how that season ended.

1, The Canes need

1, The Canes need Brind'Amour, Cullen, and Williams to play at their injury-free potential.

2. Get goals from the blue line.

3. Get consistency from the goalies.

4. Gleason or Pitkanen must fill Wesley's stay-at-home role.

In order to have a successful season...

the 'Canes must have better overall team defense. It starts between the pipes with Cam. While he makes some great saves, he also seems to have the knack of letting in that bad goal at the wrong time of the game. As a 5 man unit, the team needs to be better in front of him as well. The forwards can't peel of and head up ice assuming that a defenseman has control of the puck and has a clear lane to make that outlet pass. Too many times that happened last year and we turned the puck over in our own zone. I still feel that we need one more physical defenseman. Maybe that will be Anton, or someone else. In the end it will come down to the overall team defense.
