The Hurricanes led the Southeast Division almost all of last season, but we know how that turned out: no division title, no playoffs.
But what about this season? The Washington Capitals have dynamic Alex Ovechkin and a good, strong cast. At Tampa Bay, new owner Oren Koules has been spending money like he produced The Dark Knight and Hancock.
Will the Canes win the division? Why or why not? The floor is open.

SE Predictions / Key Questions
Tue, 09/16/2008 - 08:35 — JRs_FaultI think there are key questions in everyone's mind about every team in the SE, not to mention the entire league, so here's my view of the SE going into the season....
Like most, I just can't figure out where TB is gonna land this year... I'm not a believer yet (see below).
1) Washington - Young talent continues to get better (Ovie, Green, Semin, Backstrom). Key ? - Will Theodore continue to play the way he did (at times) in Colorado last year?
2) Carolina - (yes, I think the division will come down to April again this year, between these two teams) - Good depth in the Top 9. Key ? - Will the addition of the offensive minded D offset what looks like another long year on PK and overall defense?
3) Florida - Really improved defense w/the Jokinen trade. Key ? - Will Horton and the other young forwards be able to take the next step and fill the void left by Ollie's departure?
4) Tampa Bay - High flying stars all over their top 6 forwards. Key ? - Will they gel into a TEAM? Where's the D? Will their woes in goal continue? Will they stay healthy (Roberts >40 games??, Recchi? how will LeCavalier come back from his late season injury)?
5) Atlanta - Kovalchuck, not much else. Key ? - Will they add yet another #1 overall pick to this already loaded division?
Florida will surprise
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 18:32 — ctillOlli is gone, but the Panthers could be tough.
If the canes can stay
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 17:44 — Anonymous (not verified)If the canes can stay healthy they have a good chance to win. tampa Bay will score a lot but will also give up a lot and you can't be a consistent winner that way. Washington is one Injury to Ovetchkin away from not being much of factor becaue the fact is Christobal Huet is the reason they got in the Playoff's last year and Thodore is very inconsistent and will not provide the Goaltending that Huet did. Florida is a very underated team and could cause problems, but in the long run if the canes stay healthy and Ward stays focused with a better Defense in front of him they should be fine.
What we have to do...
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:30 — Anonymous (not verified)We will win the division if Staal, Brind'Amour, & Cullen lead 3 solid scoring lines, if Laviolette learns to play his 4th line, if Pitkanen & Corvo spark one of the better PPs in the league, if Gleason becomes a shut-down defender, if someone like Seidenberg steps up as a top-4 D, if the PK shows a great deal of improvement, if we can actually manage to win a few shootouts, if the team brings consistent energy every night, and perhaps most importantly, if Cam Ward finally shows that he is solid #1 goalie in this league.
Otherwise, we will probably not win the division this year, & we will have a hard time squeaking into the playoffs.
Southeast
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 10:27 — Chris (not verified)On paper we are probably third in the Southeast - we don't have the marquis talent that both Tampa (Lecavalier, St. Louis, and Stamkos) & Washington (Ovetchkin, Semin, Backstrom, etc.) possess. Luckily we only play these teams 6 times each and by most accounts the Atlantic & Northeast are probably not as strong top to bottom as they were last year. It would not be surprising if at least 2 teams from the Southeast made the playoffs this year. We will need to stay healthy, play consistent, and have balanced contributions (to beat Wash. & Tampa we'll need scoring from our 3rd & 4th lines). As always, it will be interesting.
The Southeast is wide open
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:12 — RG (not verified)The Southeast is wide open this year and the competition is fierce between Carolina, Washington, Tampa and Florida. Atlanta will be a mess, but those other four clubs will scratch and claw all season long to try and win the SE crown. On paper, Tampa made the most changes to improve their club...their defense is a huge question mark and awfully young, but they have a ton of talent up front and should be much improved. I agree with a previous poster that Washington is actually weaker in goal, with Huet and Kolzig gone and a very inconsistent Theodore in goal makes the Caps a question mark. The best blue line in the Southeast hands down goes to the Panthers, and their goaltending is also good, but will they score enough to stay close? Carolina still has a good enough team to win the Southeast but only if they stay healthy and get great goaltending from Ward...if the injury bug bites yet again and/or Cam Ward struggles for consistency the Canes will not be anywhere close to the top in the division. The Canes forwards, the coaching from Lavi and the overall leadership and committment will not be an issue...but they must stay healthy and they must be solid in goal and be better all around in team defense. The Southeast should be fun to watch, but definitly no clear cut favorite to run the table in the division all season long.
I think The Hurricanes could
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:06 — Anonymous (not verified)I think The Hurricanes could win the Division... They certainly have a team which is good enough to win. If they stay healthy and if they have everyone on board 100% as a team...
However.... I would love to see two and possibly three teams from the Southeast. That may be a long shot this season... nobody knows... But I just get tired of people in the big frozen land hacking on the southeast... Even if they don't take shots at one specific team... If you win the Southeast division you are still thought of as weak because of the division... would be nice if teams like Carolina, Washington, and Tampa could change that a little....
Division
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 08:51 — Robert Gilday (not verified)The team that is the most consistent will win the division. It should come down to the 'Canes and the Caps. While many moan about the injuries the 'Canes had during the season, remember that both Chris Clark and Michael Nylander missed a great deal of the season for the Caps. If the 'Canes can shore up their defensive deficiencies, then they should win the division. The question on the Caps is will they have another magical year from Green at the point. He scored a lot of goals on the power play for them and that freed up their forwards to do more damage. If he can duplicate his season, then the Caps will be in it for the duration. What will be interesting to watch is how Tampa plays for the mulletted one. They are a dangerous team and if Melrose can get them to play any kind of consistent defense, then look out.
SE Division
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 08:21 — Buglermcd (not verified)Vying for the top two spots will be Carolina and Washington. The Caps did nothing to help their cause by replacing Huet/Kolzig with Theodore.
We still don't have a massive defense, and have lost some offense on the whole.
Tampa has no goaltending, and will remain in 3rd for most of the season.
Florida has goaltending and nothing else. Vokoun can't carry the team past 4th.
Atlanta is just in shambles. They need a new GM.
Theodore
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 18:46 — Anonymous (not verified)Don`t be so quick to write off Jose Theodore...He is back to being an elite goalie.
What it really comes down to is whether or not the `Canes can beat terrible teams like Florida, Tampa, Atlanta, NYI, Toronto, and Ottawa.
South'least'no more
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 07:46 — Anonymous (not verified)In past years our Southeast Division has been referred to as the South'least'. There might have been ample evidence in the past to support such a name but jut look at the division now! I think Atlanta will finish last this year (not by much though). Even our last place team, then, would have a bona fide superstar like Kovalchuk and a great supporting cast that was inherited from Pittsburgh via Marian Hossa. Fourth place, I believe, belongs to Florida. No Ollie will hurt this team - Bowmeester cannot shoulder the entire load and I don't think Nathan Horton is ready to put up Jokinen numbers. Vokoun seems to be tired of mediocre play and is rubbing people the wrong way in Sunshine. Third place belongs to Washington. The lack of consistent goal tending will catch up to them mid-season. Fans in DC were spoiled last year with Huet and Godzilla, but let me tell you now, Theodore is a notch down from Huet. This team will be good, but I think they will lose games 5-4 and 6-3 a lot. The Second place team resides in Raleigh, NC. The Hurricanes are considerably better than last season with a mobile blue line. I love Sergei Samsonov and Tuomo Ruutu. Corvo, Pitkanen, Melichar, and Gleason will look great this year and I think Kaberle will have a bounce back season - if he's still with the team. Ward and Leighton will have a good supporting cast around them this year too. By the way, Williams, Cullen, Brind'amour, Walker.... all healthy. The 'Canes proved their depth last season and now won't be afraid to use it. Tampa Bay will preform the miracle worst-to-first. I think Lecavilier and St. Louis will be much happier this year with Stamkos, Prospel (again), Recchi, Roberts, and Vrbata. Vinny can be the best statistical player in the leauge if he wants to and St. Louis is still as dangerous as ever if he's in the right mindset. Ollie Kolzig will provide a bit more stability between the pipes which has been cause for concern the past few seasons.
If I'm wrong about any of this it will be that the Hurricanes are going to take first place. Really though, the top three spots are up for grabs in this division. Should be an interesting year!!
Stahl's Contract
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 07:26 — Punch Imlach (not verified)I hope Stahl's new contract includes a heavier purse than the one he used last year. The one he carried last year was just to light to hurt anyone when he hit them with it.
Staal
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 11:48 — Anonymous (not verified)Spell much?
Divisional Winner Will Be
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 07:14 — esteban1949The team who will be consistant, healthy, and a team who can and will be able to call on it's secondary folks to fill in the gaps that surely will come this season. I see a hard fought season for some teams as they could struggle and i can see where this division can get or be lopsided. But what ever happens, the Canes, will have to be solid, unforgiving, and be able to keep their fore checking skills sharp and make any team in our devision have second thoughts about wanting to even get on the ice with them. Not bullies mind you, but feared and respected...
We will have to keep the puck at the other end more than in ours, we will have to improve on the following:
passing skills
fore checking
rebounds
and help Cam & Michael in goal by following up on the rebounds.
what we have or appears that we have have:
2 possibly 3 solid lines...but we need 3 solid lines...and a good 4th line.
returning vets who now know what it will take to get to and past the playoffs.
Players who aren't afraid of giving help to teamates so that as a team...they can get into the playoff and beyond.
But only time and injuries will tell !
Good question Chip !
Go Canes !!
Huet, more than anyone,
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 06:03 — Anonymous (not verified)Huet, more than anyone, enabled Washington to make that stretch run. They couldn't keep him. Who do they have in goal now to match him? I'm not sure if there's a favorite, but certainly Washington isn't THE favorite.
Will They win? Can They Win... Yes.
Sun, 09/14/2008 - 23:34 — Jeff (not verified)I think the division will be tight, unlike past years where one team typically runs away with it, or leads most of the year. The division games will be as important as ever. No taking a night off and letting the other guys do the work, if this team can work consistantly each and every night, we should be doing fine come april.
