Pretty basic question today: is the Southeast Division race over?
As the Hurricanes near the midpoint of the season, they trail the Washington Capitals by 10 points in the division. A lot of hockey left, but can the Caps be caught? Why or why not?
The floor is open.

Need help at trade deadline...
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 17:47 — batsleft_throwsleftHelp has to come in the way of a trade or the Canes won't make the conference finals. I'm thinking they can avoid seeing Boston in the first round at least for now. If they can just close on the Caps a little in Jan / Feb, then a good trade could result in the division title. It all depends on the Caps playing like mere mortals.
Tripp is excellent in his role. He gives accurate assessments and play diagrams that are hard to see on TV but are obvious at the arena, so watching is more like being there. He gets a lot out of interviews, which is a real art, if you watch crews on Center Ice around the league try to get anything from a player between periods etc.
As for Versus etc. I think the NHL is moving in the wrong direction with nationally telivised games like the winter classic. Who needs to know about skate sharpening while the teams are skating? Their chatter decreases the tension from watching the contest, it slows the rhythm down to the level of watching golf. I want to be on the edge of my seat if the play is good and fast. Compare Versus to a Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, Versus needs to change.
great point...
Wed, 01/07/2009 - 10:19 — jgrant641tripp is actually friends with some players so he seems to get better interviews with the players.

Contenders?
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 07:49 — lewpulsThe first time the Canes went to the cup finals, no one would have said during the season that they were a Stanley Cup contender. Right now we can't say the Canes are SC contenders, but who knows what will happen, especially with the same (smart) coach in charge?
This year is just like so many years past when Mo was coach, the players aren't as good as some other teams' players, as a group, and the Canes will scratch and claw to make (or not make) the playoffs. In the end it may depend on Cam Ward.
about the coaching...
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 11:55 — jgrant641As far as the coach goes its much more important that the players like and respect their coach. Anybody catch Walker last night talking about Mo being one of his favorite coaches he's had? Staal likes him too...

Broadcast team
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 07:37 — lewpulsI think the broadcasters are fine. Tripp is amusing rather than grating. The two fit together well.
I agree...
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 11:51 — jgrant641The comic relief is worth it. Tripp says something crazy and Forslund, the consummate professional, quips without outright calling Tripp a complete moron is great.
There are some real terrible broadcasters out there. Some are so boring, its better to mute and listen to the delays radio broadcast and others have no respect for opposing teams. Tripp and John are of the few in the league that will commend the great play, or a justified penalty even though it may favor the opposing team.

I agree as well...
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 15:45 — mdavidhallSure Tripp can be a little annoying at times, mostly in not knowing when to let something completely inane drop, or when going overboard in slurping a particular player, but overall I think he can be pretty amusing at times, and IMHO our TV broadcast team is one of the best out there. I don't have NHL Center Ice this season, but when I have in the past it's pretty glaring how bad some announcing teams are. If anyone thinks John and Tripp are homers, you have not head anything yet.
Go Canes!

Caps are peaking too soon...
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 20:31 — GENOThis is a grueling marathon. Caps peaked just at the right time last year only to be embarrassed by the Flyers in the playoffs.
1 player away
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 14:52 — piratepike09I stand by my feeling that we are 1 high-level forward away from icing a cup-contending team. We have the goaltending, we have what has turned out to be a much more solid group defensively that we ever thought possible (considering their past performances), and most of our forwards are starting to score at a pretty good pace. Not one player has a huge long scoring streak, because they all score pretty evenly. You see how Pitkanen and Corvo weren't scoring for a few games, but who was? Babchuck. Staal and Samsonov dont score for a game or 2, but who does? Whitney, Cullen, LaRose.....see my point? If we were to be able to use maybe Eaves, Brookbank, maybe some prospects (we have many high-level prospects right now that could play RIGHT NOW on other NHL teams, but we are too deep to think about them being here less than 2 years or so out) and/or some draft pics, we could land ourselves a good, even just 2nd tier forward, the likes of Rolston, Cammaleri, Zajac....just throwing names out there, I dont know their contract situations, or not sure if they would even fit here. But we need to find that one more piece, and I think we will be right there with the teams hunting for the Cup, and not those just trying to make the playoffs.
I think that this team is
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 15:54 — Chris12I think that this team is two moves away from being a legit cup contender. 1. Moving Rod Brind`amour out of the top nine. 2. Acquiring a Spezza or Horton to the lineup to compliment the Staal line. But it will never happen because this organization is too attached to Brindy and wont even scale back his minutes, let alone question his play.
No
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 06:55 — jgrant641Brindy isnt a 4th liner, 4th line is typically "energy" players... a 38 year old isnt a 4th liner. a 3rd line role as many have suggested is a good fit right now for Brindy. I don't see throwing Brindy under the bus as a good move. What is it with people wanting players/coaches heads on platters for a rough patch. Brindy is older and went through a pretty rough injury and missed a good portion of the season last year... by his own admission he needs to step it up, i think the last few games he has played much better.
We won't be trading for Horton as Flordia would never ship him to a SE team, much less an eastern team unless the deal is too good.
I agree with the original post, One bigger piece to the puzzle is missing to be a more well rounded threat.
Keep in mind people we have a ton of hockey left to be played. All teams are one injury, or one adjustment away from slumping or winning... that includes the caps. As long as the players focus on each game, the wins will happen, they can't worry about what the caps are doing.

Slim or none
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 13:31 — scomilThe chances of catching the Caps are slim or none - the Caps are a top-level team and the Canes are one of many fighting to just get into the playoffs. Considering the high number of teams that are playoff-capable this year, the trade market should be a lot of fun to watch the next two months.
The fact of the matter ...
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 12:28 — totalkev... is that the Caps are a legit Cup contender. We are a playoff contender. Yes, I think the division is out of reach, but it really doesn't make a difference in what the Canes need to do. They're not competing with the Caps, they're competing with the entire Eastern Conference. They have to get points. If they end up somehow catching Washington, that would be a bonus, but I don't think anyone should necessarily be thinking about it that way.
Upward and onward
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 12:03 — DavidMeyerThe odds of the Canes catching the Crapitals are low, but we can't have that mindset. We have to set our sights on them no matter what. A benefit of that internal pressure will hopefully be that we rise in the conference standings as we chase them.
I've got to defend Tripp Tracy. I enjoy listening to him, and feel he does a good job. I think our Canes TV tandem is one of the very best in the league (based on watching NHL Center Ice games).
Tripp and John ... and even Chuck since we're already here
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 13:38 — CaniacGuyAfter watching a half-season's worth of hockey on Center Ice now, it's my opinion as well that in spite of Tripp's ramblings and shortcomings, he and John Forslund are undoubtably the best tandem in the league right now. They are by far the best tandem I or Mrs. CaniacGuy have heard over this past season.
Yeah, Tripp rambles, rumbles, fawns (is that right) over some of the guys and pretty much asks the same questions every time, and yeah the chalk talks are sometimes no more cohesive than some of the power plays we've been on but all in all he's ok, and besides Mrs. CG and I enjoy sitting back and screaming "shut up already, Tripp" at the TV set. He's an acquired taste.
Don't listen to Chuck very much since I'm usually home by the time the games get going but the man is *good* with a star!!
And did anyone catch John's call on the not-goal the other night? I don't remember who it was, Sammie maybe, that had a shot at a virtual open net and the tender made the save. John had the words "he scores" ***OUT OF HIS MOUTH*** when the goal was NOT scored, and somehow he made the save and changed it to "and ... he doesn't score". John, if you're reading this ... first that was fantastic and second it really needs to be on your personal highlight of your career tape. Thanks!
We are lucky
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 16:24 — JRs_FaultWith Center Ice & XM (which generally use the home team radio broadcasts), one can make a pretty good assessment, and I think Carolina is certainly blessed on both radio & TV with guys that are easily better than most around the league.
Tripp is an acquired taste, yes, but I like the way Forslund needles him (even more this year it seems). They are pretty unique in their level of humor and informal delivery, and as color guys go, Tripp is much less of a Homer than many out there (Laughlin's already been mentioned, and Florida's Denny Potvin is even worse, IMHO).
Forslund has earned his expanded role on VS, Kaiton is in the HOF (does anyone else work alone on the radio anymore?). If Tripp goes off once or twice a night on his patented 'food references' who cares??
It IS entertainment after all... not a Pulitzer competition.
Totally agree
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 13:50 — CanenutI agree with you CaniacGuy. My first year to follow the Canes I did not have cable TV so I listened to Chuck every game. After listening to others online I have no doubt that he is the best. Love Kaitons corner, had many questions answered.
The last 2 years I have cable but no center ice (cheapo as my kids tell me). But I have been able to watch other games on line (Yahoosports) and do not think the broadcast teams work as well together as John and Tripp. They actually seem to like each other and John is always able to get Tripp back on the game. I find myself laughing at time when they get off on tangents, how else would I know that Tripp love Taco Bell after the games.
Not sure how this subject got started but I would not trade any of them.
Kaiton
Tue, 01/06/2009 - 12:19 — Pabs13Chuck Kaiton is the best in the business. I love listening to him on the radio.
Wow
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 13:23 — Pabs13I'll give you that J.F. calls a good game. But have you noticed how much better he is on Versus (without Tripp). I'm sorry, I'm a huge Canes fan, but you can't say with a straight face that Tripp Tracy is amongst the better color guys in the league. It's simply not true.
Why??
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 15:28 — wareagles81Lay off Tripp--he has a niche. But I love Eddie Olczyk!! He's awesome. Keith Jones is pretty good up in Philly.
tripp who ??
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 15:48 — esteban1949is that the guy, who is 35, single, loves taco bell ( Shameful plug) but played where, for who, and his total NHL career stats are where? Compared to say a Tony-O or what's that goalies name that is hot right now from Atlanta??? I wonder if Tripp Who will or be able to match up to anyone like that...hmmm
He's No Tony-O....
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 16:34 — JRs_Faultsounds like the same guy (two years as a starter at Harvard, plus a journeyman ECHL/AHL career after Philly drafted him, for the record).
Let's not compare him to Tony-O... great players don't always make great color guys anyway (Exhibit A: HOF'er Denis Potvin) though I love listening to the 'other' Espo on his afternoon call-in show as well as TB home games on the radio (he's more like the guy having a beer next to you in the stands than a 'classic' color guy).
Atlanta has a hot goalie??? Where are they hiding him? They've lost 5 of 6 since Christmas.
Upward Trajectory
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 11:35 — JRs_FaultI was going to mention Forsland's assessment as well... and I agree. Washington has opened up a sizeable lead in the division, despite missing a lot of key man-games (more that the Canes thus far, I would guess). Semin's missed two stretches, Ovechkin went home for over a week, Green/Federov/etc. have been in and out as well. Barring any disastrous injuries, I don't see them giving up much of the lead.
So the discussion is the Conference, not the Division.
If the Canes keep improving their overall game and defensive responsibility, I see them moving from a fight on the bubble (7-9th) to fighting for 4-7th.
1/2 - Bruins/Caps - it will come down to who can put together the most hot streaks over the next 3 months.
3 - Atlantic champ - I like Philly. NJ will continue to lose pace until & even after Brodeur returns, Pitt is missing their offensive D despite Crosby/Malkin's output and the Rangers are coming back to the pack after getting an advantage of more games played early on).
4-7 - Pens/Canes/Habs/Rangers - Pens & Habs are too good to fall out of the playoff hunt altogether. We'll see about the Canes & Rangers. The Canes have one advantage in that they'll be playing the SE more, instead of the Atlantic, which will hurt NJ/NYR/PITT.
8-9 - Devils/Sabres will be fighting it out for the last spot. Florida might be in there if they can get their offense going.
Toronto has been overachieving to even stay close to the bubble, and the rest have fallen too far behind in the first half to have anything but a miracle chance of squeaking in.
division
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 10:13 — louis12580Is the division title out of reach? Perhaps. A lot of things need to go the 'Canes' way for that to happen. There is a better chance of getting into the playoffs, however. The team is not that far out of fourth in the conference. As long as they take care of the business at hand, they will be in the hunt. Other teams, Pittsburgh, are struggling and the 'Canes need to take advantage of that. They can't give points away cheaply like the games against the Flyers. I have noticed some steady improvement over the past few weeks. There seems to be better communication both on and off the ice. The power play can still be a hit or miss proposition but that has shown signs of improvement, save for that dreadful 5 on 3 the other night against St. Louis. As for the cheap shot against Tripp, I'd rather him than Craig Laughlin for the Caps
Laughlin
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 12:53 — capannolaAbsolutely agreed - he's awful.......not an ounce of objectivity. Tripp may be goofy sometimes, but he's at least objective.
The key will be whether the
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 10:05 — robotron2084The key will be whether the Canes can win against the playoff-bound teams the way they have the non-playoff-bound ones. It's nice to beat Atlanta, St. Louis and Tampa, but let's see if they can carry it through against teams like New Jersey, Buffalo and the Rangers. Speaking of which, after their hot start to the season, the Canes are just 4 points in back of the Rangers now.
And as for Tripp Tracy, he doesn't bother me. He's comic relief as far as I'm concerned.
Like John Forslund said in
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 09:25 — RonMexicoLike John Forslund said in an interview last week, this is is a team that will be fighting for a playoff spot and that's it. They should have won the division last year because the Caps were poised to take over the Southeast with all of the talent they have. I am more concerned with securing a playoff spot than with what the Caps are doing.
Short Memories?
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 09:05 — Pabs13Remember what happened to us last year???? Of course anything can happen. I think Paul Maurice has this team playing good hockey again. His next coaching test will be to get Rod Brind'Amour playing NHL level hockey again, if not, taking away his ice time, because the rest of the team is getting dragged down by his poor play.
I know what a great player he's been for this team. I do not question his work ethic, but when a player struggles this much, for this long, something needs to change.
Lastly, what does everyone think of the FSN broadcast team? To me, Tripp Tracy is like nails on a chalk board. Anyone else think he needs to go?
Brind'Amour's ice time
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 09:46 — piratepike09vs ATL 12/31: Brind'Amour-16:32, Cullen-14:28 (2:04 difference)
vs STL 1/02: Brind'Amour-20:34, Cullen-16:37 (3:57 difference)
vs TBL 1/03: Brind'Amour-16:50, Cullen-15:58 (0:52 difference)
should be interesting over the next few games to see how closely their times are matched. :52 is very close considering the usual difference between 2nd and 3rd line playing time.
Anything can
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 06:34 — esteban1949Anything can happen . What we all want and desire to see is one thing..but is it really over ? No, not by a long shot. But if the canes are to try and get into the playoffs in a solid fashion then it's time to quit messing around, kick some but, take names, and give no quater. And then pray that the caps catch a flu bugg...and they fall off so the canes can close up the gap. But if the caps do stay healthy, keep playing as they curently are, then the Canes will need a 1980 Olympic style of win...Just to get into the playoffs.
esteban turns to roll off the floor...and see's the Micro-wave is gone...gee so much for instant gratification huh ?
Go Canes !!
micro-wave?
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 08:50 — piratepike09you are wierd.
Caps have to lose
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 05:39 — CanenutThe Caps will have to lose several games in a row and us win several in a row at the same time. I can not imagine that they can keep this pace up for another 41 games. It was frustrating that in Nov the Canes win - Caps win, Canes lose - Caps lose, so nothing changed. I have stopped looking at the division and just look at where we are at in the conference. Has every one noticed that with 3 wins we have moved from 9th to 7th, that goes along with 4 loses by the Pens, and we are not far from 5th spot.
We have three four point
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 03:22 — CaniacforeverWe have three four point swings left against them. If we can win out in those games, we certainly stand a chance.
Regardless of the division, my concern is getting into the post season again to justify all this money that is being spent to ice a roster as talented as the one we have.
7th, 8th.... no matter. Just get into the game. Anything can happen from there.
Set Target for 4th or 5th next
Mon, 01/05/2009 - 11:11 — ynotagainI'd rather not settle for a 7th or 8th spot and have to play the Caps in the first round.
Target a 4th or 5th spot as the next phase of this improvement AND THEN look at who can win the Southeast.
BUT ... as said above, it's take one good, solid game at a time !
