Monday debate: Jeff O'Neill

Bookmark and Share

The Canes have invited Jeff O'Neill to training camp to take a look, but what does that mean?

Does the former Hurricanes forward have a legitimate chance of making the roster? Could O'Neill be used, say, as a fourth-line center? Would he accept an assignment in Albany, if need be? Can he still be an effective NHL player?

Pipe dream or the real thing? Good chance or no chance? What do you think?

Why Not

Granted, he did take a year off. He will have some rust. But we're talking about a 32 year old with 237 NHL goals, and almost 500 NHL points. This is not a fringe player who can't puck the puck in the net. If he doesn't have the heart for it? Fine, shake hands and part ways. However, JR would be negligent in his duties to not investigate the possibility of O'Neill having his personal house in order and seeing if he's ready to play hockey. If he is, he's a proven NHL goal scorer that you can sign for the league minimum. Why not kick the tires and see if he has any mileage left in him. When you have a limited budget, you have to look for bargains like this that may or may not work out.

I'd kind of like to see

I'd kind of like to see Sutter play with the Hurricanes this season. We'll see come training camp how back in shape Jeff really is. I don't think I'd want him hanging out with our young prospects in Albany. It's a classy invitation by Mr. Rutherford, but how about we wait until later in the season to decide if we want him or not. Who knows, if we end up bringing him in, he may turn out like Darren McCarty did for the wings in the playoffs this year, but for now I'd play it safe.

Can't lose here

There's no harm in inviting O to camp w/o a contract. If he comes in w/ a good attitude, in good shape, & plays well, we can sign him. If not, we can cut him loose in a heartbeat. We are looking for depth at C, a position O can play. With Sutter an unproven youngster, Cullen's health in question, & Rod a year older coming off reconstructive knee surgery, I think it's not a bad idea to add some experience at this position. For me, it's a can't-lose situation.

Raleigh - Aren't We The Home of Redeemed Athletes?

These comments are just matters of opinion but I couldn't have been the only one who watched former crack addict Josh Hamilton belting towering shots out during the All-Star Game's Homerun Derby. That's our boy from Raleigh. We should be a city that has strong faith in redemption. Even Sergei Samsonov - couldn't play for other teams in the NHL because he was reportedly lazy or lost or what have you. We are a city that has seen transformations. I am not suggesting your past greatness should give you a pass in the present. No way. You've got to perform - and essentially outperform others who aren't doubted if you're making a comeback. I predict that you'll hear he's working out with Captain Rod and the boys come this Friday and that he's committed to making this team. If I wrong - I'll admit it. I think this is true about great players - they know how to be great. Mediocre players don't - no matter how hard they work to be great. O'Neill was a great player. I hope he turns out like that 1967 Corvette that you find dusty and under a tarp that when you just crank the engine - SHAZAM!!!

I have a lot of respect for

I have a lot of respect for Jeff O'Neill....  but he does not compare to Josh Hamilton in any way whatsoever!

Respect But No Comparison?

Okay, I'll admit O'Neill was an all-star and proven big league performer and leading NHL goal scorer before he ran into personal issues so I'll give you that.  Hamilton had his personal issues before he proved himself in the big leagues.  But, otherwise, it is a bit weak to say they don't compare in any way whatsoever.  O'Neill was a first round draft pick - one of Canada's highest celebrated junior players.  Hamilton same thing for baseball if not more celebrated as a prospect.  O'Neill has a personal tragedy, Hamilton has a personal affliction.  Both love the game they are great at and plan a return.  Both have some serious tattoos marking their personal periods of struggle.  I mean, seriously, no comparison whatsoever?  Whatever.

He earned the right for this tryout years ago

He appears to be in shape. He did a lot for the orgaNIzation. This was JR's first pick I believe. He does not have a contract. Let him try out. If it is a bust, so be it. If he makes the squad, he will be a plus for the part time fans who remember him from the past. If Sutter is ready, he will get the spot. If not, maybe O'Neill will. I find it hard to believe he would get more than a 1 yr deal if he did make the team and the door would be open for Sutter again next year.

I for one look forward to sneaking over from work and watching some of camp. Should be interesting.

Goal Scoring Talent

I don't know about any of you, but I like to believe in comebacks. We're from Raleigh - the home of Josh Hamilton. This guy spent serious time in the crackhouses of our great land - and put on one of the most outrageous displays of homerun hitting talent in that All-Star Game homerun derby. But look at our pride when he overcomes his demons and performs like a natural. Jeff O'Neill never did anything equivalent to Josh Hamilton in terms of getting off track - but he suffered a great personal tragedy and some difficult shoulder injuries. When he's on he's one of the best goal scorers our franchise ever put on the ice. Probably the best so far. He played 4th line and second team PP in Toronto and still scored 40 goals in two years. Some guys just know how to get a puck past a goalie. We need guys like that. He is old school - but that's not always bad. I am excited to hear what he brings to the ice come tryouts. Josh Hamilton proved that nobody is beyond redemption and a return to greatness.

If he puts forth the effort...

and plays like he's capable of- then it could be a win-win. If not- well- the Canes gave him a chance.

By asking for a one-way

By asking for a one-way contract, O'Neill isn't approaching this realistically. He needs to approach this with a "take it by force" mentality. On paper, our depth at forward is at the tops in the league and should produce many many goals. O'Neill can't expect to just walk in with his resume ending in 2002 and expect playing time. This said, as seen in the last two seasons, our forwards are, lets say, delicate. More likely than not, if Jeff swallows his pride and accepts a two-way contract, he will be up here by December. At that point he can put himself in a situation where he has earned his time and the Hurricanes can address the situation as need be. The Hurricanes shouldn't be the ones making concessions, they've provided the door. O'Neill needs to be the one to open it.

Hey Esteban & Anonymous,

Hey Esteban & Anonymous, where have you been the past 4 weeks when Luke was posting an open ended question each Monday to spark some debate? That is exactly what Chip did here. Just because he is the new guy doesn't mean that he deserves to be battered. Jeez.....
As for O'Neill, nothing is lost in a tryout invite. I am curious to see what he brings to the squad and think that it will make for a very interesting camp, something that we haven't had in a while. We have had other veteran invites come to camp (Cale Hulse, Jason Wooley, etc) but they didn't have the history with this organization like Jeff does. I personally can't wait to see how it all works out.

Sutter can't go to the AHL

Sutter still has one more year of eligibility in juniors. He can't play in the AHL next season. The only options for him are either the NHL or juniors. He'd be eligible to play in the AHL next year when all of his junior eligibility is up.

As far as a waiver claim, if Jeff was brought up to replace someone who went on the DL, which is likely given the current crop of forwards, he would be protected from waiver claims coming up and going back down.

Geez tough crowd. Its Monday

Geez tough crowd. Its Monday debate, not Monday listen to the bloggers opinion. Pop a couple Xanax folks... Now that I'm off my soapbox, I think its a smart idea to give Jeff a chance. There have been concerns that Cullen may not be 100 percent or could be just 1 more hit away from another concussion. If so, we could use someone like Jeff. On the other hand, maybe the Canes are still looking at making some trades (Kabs plus a forward?) and Jeff could be used to fill a hole that results. Wish I could get in JR's head for just 5 minutes. Again, we are just giving him a chance, not a multi-year multi-million dollar deal.

O Dog

O will be here to work out with the boys at the Rec Zone starting next week. He has been training at home in Canada, and is looking forward to getting down to Raleigh, and taking advantage of the opportunity that Jim and the Canes have given him with the invitation to camp.

He can still be an effective player in the NHL, and is all he is asking is an opportunity to prove it.

Jeff " O"

1. Chip, why should we give you all the juicey stuff when you are the one who needs to do the job...isn't that what they ( N&O) pay you for ?

2. I can't see Jeff in Albany, it would be the "rats' fault if he spoiled the barrel. But as grandma loved to say, " nothing ventured, nothing gained" !

3. The Canes lose nothing by offering a " tryout"...no more than they'd lose if Chip was invited to camp for a tryout...Hey Chip...you can skate can't you ?...hehehe...

4. If i was able to see both jeff and Sutter on the ice i could get a better idea...but in my gut...I think Sutter needs to go to Albany for a season...unless called up like anyone else do to injuries...If Jeff were to make it...

but i'm old Hockey fan...who can't stand woosies and whimps...When hocky wasn't for the faint of heart and when first line players drove a Chevey and not sports cars or rolling juke boxes & sound machines with engines and 4 wheels on em...Go Rosie...Go Canes !!

No Sutter in Albany

The main reason for bringing Sutter up to the Canes is that he can't play in Albany until he turns 20 which doesn't happen until February.  He's either with the Canes or goes back to a terrible Red Deer team that overused him.  JR & Co. feel he will mature faster on the 4th line here than he will in Red Deer so barring some unforseen calamity he'll be in Raleigh this year.

Sutter

Sutter is too young to play in the AHL (the end of last season was a tryout contract).  It's either the Canes or back to Red Deer, and I'm not sure there's much more growing he can do in juniors.

I'm reading alot of he can

I'm reading alot of he can play in albany and be a good call up if there is an injury. Are we forgetting that JR already talked to him about a two way deal and he turned it down. Jeff specifically said he wants a one way deal.

Its play or bust for Jeff. Also have to remember that if he would sign a 2 way deal, he's elgible for the waiver wire.

Only on a 2-way

The only way this makes sense is if Jeff will accept a 2-way contract, or if he just blows the doors off the RBC during training camp. I am not sure how Jeff would fit in as a 4th line guy, but he'd be a good guy to have around if someone in the top 9 goes down. Having said all of that, there is absolutely no risk in inviting the guy to camp. If he doesn't pan out in camp, nothing is lost. If the Canes do sign him, I'm sure they will not want to further stretch their budget situation (assuming they can't shed some salary elsewhere).

No doubt Jeff was an

No doubt Jeff was an important player for us when he was here. Really who can forget him getting a black eye, coming back into the game and getting the game winner with one eye closed.

However, he did take a year off. Even though he says he trained during that year, Lavi's system is pretty aggressive and very up tempo. Moreso then what Jeff is used to.

Barring any injuries, I don't see him taking a spot on the top 9. It would be pretty hard winning a spot over any currently penciled in on the top 9, IMHO. Its likely going to take longer than pre-season to get him back in game shape so I don't see how he will outplay any of those guys.

point taken...

however, i wouldnt say he isnt used to up tempo, he was on a line for several years with the fastest skater in hockey sami kapanen.  That line did so well because with ronnie centering they were able to beat the trap and speed up the ice.

Bah.

Hey Chip, why not actually give us *your* opinion, instead of asking a question and letting all the content write itself?

You all do realize this is

You all do realize this is the same thing Luke has been doing every Monday for weeks right?  Give the guy a break, he's keeping the transition seamless.  If he legitimately steps out of line or starts writing about something other than the Canes, feel free to let loose, but until then, give the guy a chance to do the same job Luke was doing.

monday debate...

Dont we leave the debate to the readers every monday like this.  Give the guy a chance.

Perhaps if *you* read the blog regularly *you* would know that Luke started having Monday discussions for the slower off season.  Scroll through and see some of the interesting topics that have been put forward and received a lot of response from readers of this blog.

Now back to our regularly scheduled discussion.

I'm all for bringing him here for a tryout, nothing lost by doing that.  I'm sure that JR is well aware of his past issues and won't pull the trigger on a contract unless he's confident Jeff is in shape and in the right frame of mind/attitude.

you must be new here, this

you must be new here, this is the monday topic debate for the readers to debate.  luke started this several weeks ago and leaves the door open for us to all give our 2 cents.

granted it is busy work to pacify us during the summer, but still just how its been for a bit now.

enjoy it.

btw chip, get used to posts like these;)

Jeff

I agree with a lot of what's been said here. When Jeff was playing hard, he was a great talent. I don't think anyone's seen that kind of work from Jeff in at least 4 years. The big question is not if we can use him, it is whether he'll work hard and leave the me-first attitude at home.
Sure, he has said and done some questionable things in the past, but I believe that people have the ability to change. If he wants it bad enough, he'll be skating at the RecZone with Rod and company on August 25th (or very soon after) to get his legs back and to build up a little chemistry with the guys. And, if he doesn't make the cut in camp, he should be willing to accept an AHL assignment, if only as a conditioning stint.
We seem crowded at forward, but is sure wouldn't hurt to have a guy like O'Neill in the wings if we suffer injuries to our top 9, assuming, that is, that he earns his shot.
If this is next summer, he has even less chance of earning a spot with the Canes, as we'll like have a few more forward prospects ready for a shot at the NHL. So, go for it Jeff and prove that you've still got it.

Old #92

I see this as a 50/50 deal with bringing back O'Neil. In a good way if he gets picked up and sent down to albany we've got a veteran player that can be called up if we need him. If he goes to Albany also the younger players that are wanting to come up and play for the Canes will have to play hard and hungry if O'Neil actually is up to a playing level worthy of him coming back up to the NHL. Plus if he isn't up to team standards no harm no foul cause he never made it back to play in the NHL for the Canes. The bad thing that I can see that could possibly happen is that O'Neil gives a strong performance down in Albany and comes to Raleigh and then just fizzles out and then we are the ones left with egg on our face. But just keep this in mind that around the time of the trade O'Neil had some rough times that messed with his head and had an effect on him. I'm sure with the time he's been away hopefully he's been able to clear his head and get on track. He just needs to remember in the back of his head that this could be his last shot at the NHL so he needs to make the best of a golden opportunity.

you mentioned the draw back

you mentioned the draw back being him potentially fizzling out... that is actually the same for sutter and any other "bubble" ahl/nhler getting called up.

keep in mind we are talking 4th line spot here, not centering the top line.

A Few Things

One, the organization has not yet offered Jeff a contract, he's coming to camp on a try out basis. Right now the Canes have risked absolutely nothing. If he washes out of camp then the Canes lost nothing and gained the knowledge that Jeff is no longer an NHLer. To me, I can't see how this is bad for the team in any way.

Two, I think he'll be a good influence on the kids in the AHL. This is a guy who scored 40 goals in a season at a time when scoring was down. This is a former all-star. If there's not a better reminder that you have to work hard all day every day to play in the NHL I don't know what it is.

Three, I can't see O'Neill fitting in on the fourth line. He's not a natural center. He doesn't kill penalties like LaRose. He's not going to get a one-way deal like Ryan Bayda. If he's anything, he's a winger on one of the top 3 lines. There's been rumors of Williams being traded for Bieksa + ( could be Williams and Kaberle for Bieksa and a prospect/pick, I don't know) I think the O'Neill experiment is really to see if we can move Williams and improve the defense. Corvo, Pitkanen, Gleason, Bieksa Wallin and Seidenberg isn't a bad group of defensemen. Figure in that Bowman or Dalpe or Boychuk will play in the NHL next year and all you need is one year out of O'Neill to make it work.

can you post a link for the

can you post a link for the williams bieska rumors?  i havent seen it anywhere.

I do recall a Cole/Bieska rumor, and the wild card was williams if it wasnt cole.

Bieksa / Williams Source

It's from Ecklund (or should we say ACKland) a couple of days ago (at least that's the most recent retread of the rumor that started out with Cole / Bieksa until the Pitkanen trade went July 1)

 http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=16500

Plenty of talk on both Canes & Canuks boards as well.

Boards...

I never buy into anything posted on boards unless it has some legit backing.  I haven't seen that posted anywhere, plus i doubt JR is interested in moving williams AND cole in the same summer.

Plus this would also be contingent on Sundin not going to Vancouver.

Word is Sundin is, if he

Word is Sundin is, if he goes anywhere, he would not mind going to the Rangers.  Now, they may have to clear out some but the reason I hear this is since it is close to east.  His agent has said that the Canucks have lost out due to travel.  May not be final as I dont think this thing will ever end but was told on Canadian radio yesterday he likes the Rangers and then the Flyers.   Agaiin, nothing to support this but true inside info through Toronto sources.

Rumors

Agreed wrt the board chatter, which is mostly a reaction (in this case) to Ecklund's usual scattershot rumor mongoring.  It would be interesting to see what his batting average is... it's a safe bet that it's well below the Mendoza line.

It will be intersting to see what happens after the Sundin (non)signing, or whatever happens... as JR said, there seems to be a few logs jammed up at this point waiting to see who has how much $$ to play with.

If that rumour were true

the I say no to O!  Jeff is no replacement for Willie, horrible idea and A rumour i would put NO stock in.

As it is, which is just a frickin courtesy try out, why not.  He comes in and shows he coudl be a avaluable asset and we find a way to make it happen, or he proves that a year of rec league has left him a step slow(er) and unable to compete in our system we say latter!

Jeffy O

Honestly, I would rather have Jeff O'Neill than Chad LaRose. Play Jeff on the 4th line if he makes the team and give hime those minutes as well as Power Play time. He could play 12 minutes a game and have a huge impact on the season!

are u kidding me? I would

are u kidding me?

I would rather have jeff o'neill than brandon sutter right now. i think that everyone is pushing sutter coming up. the kid's not even 20 yet. o's got plenty of nhl experience while sutter's played just over 10 games in Albany.

plus, Chad LaRose is a great player on both ends. his 11 goals in 3rd-4th line time last year is good considering all the talent we had on the top 2-3 lines.

Not to mention

Not to mention the time LaRose spent on the injured list...   had he not broken his leg then he would have had a killer season.

Adding depth with Jeff

This is an attempt to address the problem with depth at the forward position. If he comes in and makes the team, it gives them some depth at forward. We can't count on everyone being in the line-up all season long. Who knows how Matt Cullen is doing. Can Ray play an entire season? We might have people at Albany, but are they goal scorers on a consistent level in the NHL? These are all questions that need to be addressed and by bringing Jeff in for a look see is a step. I would also like to see Kevyn get a shot as well.

Oneill

I have mixed emotions on this. He did have some negative remarks about living in the Triangle after he was traded to the Maple Leafs. I think the Canes were a stronger team in 2006 when he was gone. However, he was a moninant player in the 2002 Cup Run. I say people change...if he hustles, works hard, changes his ways, looses the big head...I would welcome him back...he deserves a second chance. i think he has the talent to get 20-30 goals a year in the NHL....but he has to work....check the ego at the door.

no for me

i would say he just adds another new face that has to get used to our system.

the fewer the better.
are we forgetting that we have great forwards.

are you forgetting...

... we have great top 9 forwards, then what?  a lot of questions marks and "if" players.

I would really like to see

I would really like to see Sutter on the team this year-- if he's ready-- looked like he was at prospect camp..
Maybe Jeff looks good at camp maybe he can get another job elsewhere. I'm not sure I want him down in Albany hanging out with our young river rats. It's good of Mr. Rutherford to give O'Neil another chance though and says a lot for our organization. Hopefully things will turn out good for both the Canes and O'Neil. there is a chance he could turn into a Darren McCarty and he could be a later in the season addition around the trade deadline or something like that should we have the need for him, but for now I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of this training camp invitation.

Jeffy O is apparently off

Jeffy O is apparently off the cigs and the donuts, has settled into married life, and wants to get off the couch and make some more coin...time will tell if he is in any kind of shape to compete for a job in the NHL this season...but the Canes take zero risk by inviting him to camp, so why not? At best, he gets back into old form, scores 20 to 25 goals and plays on one of the top three lines. At worst, he lasts a week in camp, knows that he gave it his last shot and rides off into the sunset.

No Mas

I am hoping to hear that this is a really really bad joke. Seems like Jeff's "I'll stand over here and wait for something to happen" style of play is not what we need right now. On the other hand, there is some entertainment value to having a guy who loves wearing fur and capris back to mix things up in Raleigh. Would be a good mascot. Look out Stormy.

Not Ready

I seriously don't think he'll be ready. He may have stayed in shape - but playing in a men's rec league last year is not going to cut it. Granted, a rec mean's league in Toronto is far different than one here. I'd rather see Sutter as the 4th line center. It's certainly going to be fun to watch.

I think that is the point...

Sutter will have to compete for that spot in camp regardless of if it oneill or someone else.  If sutter doesnt work out then oneill or whoever deserves the shot will get a chance.

Keep in mind sutter isnt a shoe in for that #4 center spot.

The canes dont lose here because if oneill is a bust then he sits in albany for the next year and we will only be paying him 100k or so to play in the minors.

You forget that O'Neill

You forget that O'Neill already turned down a two way contract. This try out is for a one way deal. He has already specifically said he wants a one way deal. He won't be in Albany for the year. Its play or bust for Jeff right now.
