Monday debate: deciding on the D

Bookmark and Share
Tags: Canes Now

We're closing in on the regular season and there still are decisions to be made on the back end. The defensemen now on the roster: Joni Pitkanen, Tim Gleason, Joe Corvo, Niclas Wallin, Frantisek Kaberle, Anton Babchuk, Dennis Seidenberg, Josef Melichar, Tim Conboy and Bryan Rodney.

So who's in your top six? Pitkanen, Gleason and Corvo are givens, but who joins them? And why?

Please have at it.

Its a lost year - play the youth!

Sad to Say the Canes will be in a year of turnover. We extended Vets, mainly because we had no youth, and we are caught with an aging, oft injured team.
The balanced approach for D:
Gleason/Corvo
Pitaken/Seidenberg
Babchuk/Melichar

Some with a shot from On Top and A decent defender. Make the 7 guy competitive the whole year. Walling and Kaberle should compete for the same spot and If Malichar is Wallin like slipp a young guy into the 6th spot. My Vote for the 6h spot is Conboy. He gives a little of that Ward factor we let go in order to keep Kaberle and Wallin. A banger who will make oppenents pay. The downside with Conboy is we have to live through the mistakes. GO Canes - Prove me wrong!!!

For the love of hockey....

Please, please find a way to get rid of Nicky Wallin. It would improve our whole game and free up a roster spot for a guy who can actually play defense.

top 7

Gleason-Pitkanen
Corvo-Seidenberg
Kaberle-Babchuk
Melichar

Wallin waived, we can no longer afford his atrocious play. He is the worst hockey player in the NHL.
Kaberle will rebound, the guy was great when healthy. He had 22 assists last year, while being injured and paired with Wallin most of the time.
Conboy will either be a fourth line checker or the first to be called up from albany. Rodney will be a good depth guy...but hopefully wont see the NHL...

i have to agree here

I don't think Wallin is the worst player in the NHL - that's a little harsh.  I still have a hard time believing the Canes will waive him, though with the no-trade, there's not many options.  If they keep him, then I'd say Babs has to go down for the time being.  I'm going to say there's still a trade possibility coming from somewhere.

Seems like Conboy still has a suspension to serve arising from the River Rats playoff series, so he'll probably serve that down there.  Rodney is AHL for now.

Gleason/Pitkanen Corvo/Kaberl

Gleason/Pitkanen
Corvo/Kaberle
Seidenburg/Borer
Unfortunately, because Borer is the only guy with a 2-way, he gets stuck in Albany, and we get stuck with Babchuck/Melichar/Wallin.
Wallin is shot I think. Babs and Melichar may be serviceable in the 6 and 7 spots. I will say don't write of Kaberle yet. He was very good at the end of last season with Corvo. Both skate well and get the puck out quickly, so as long as they can avoid getting trapped in the zone, they are pretty effective.

Canes D-Men

I would go with these guys, and not in this parring, just these 6. Keeping one ofthe Rats on call or as a 7th d-man... Joni Pitkanen, Tim Gleason, Joe Corvo, Niclas Wallin, Anton Babchuk, Dennis Seidenberg,

my top six D men

My top six D men would have to be

1.Joe Corvo

2.Dennis Seidenberg

3.Joni Pitkanen

4.Niclas Wallin

5.Anton Babchuck

6.Casey borer

and if i could pick another one it would be Jospeph Melichar

What about Gleason

You don't think Gleason belongs in the top 6?  Or even in the top 7???

Didn't Casey Borer get sent

Didn't Casey Borer get sent down after last nights game?

Nik Wallin needs to be the

Nik Wallin needs to be the odd guy out...his play has been attrocious and father time has caught up to The Secret Weapon...too slow, too often-banged up, too set in his ways here...place him on waivers and see if someone will pick him and that salary up. Kaberle has been injured the past two seasons...give him a chance to show what he can do again healthy, the guy is a great puck mover, he thinks the game as well as any of our defenseman and he may be able to up the physical part of his game some if he is indded healthy again... Corvo-Babchuk Pitkanen-Gleason Seidenberg-Kaberle Melichar

Did I just read here that

Did I just read here that Niclas Wallin has a nice shot from the point? How would anyone know that? The puck rarely leaves the defensive zone when he's on the ice because he can't execute a routine breakout. Everybody knows to dump the puck in on Wallin's side of the ice because he'll lose that race 90% of the time. If by some miracle Wallin actually gets possession of the puck, he'll (A) rim it around the boards to the other team's defenseman (B) chip it out to center ice to the other team (C) turn the puck over behind the net.

Wallin-Corvo would be a brutal, brutal pairing. Wallin is not anywhere fast enough to cover up for Corvo's frequent defensive gaffes. Seidenberg is. Just because Wallin has the label "defensive defensemen" while Seidenberg is allegedly an "offensive defensemen" doesn't mean Wallin is better defensively. Seidenberg is the far better hockey player and that's all that counts.

Really? Seriously? REALL

Really?

Seriously?

REALLY?

Yes, good question!

From what I've seen & heard so far in camp, Seidenberg looks most ready for a chance in the top 4. Perhaps he can be paired w/ Corvo. Wallin & Kaberle have not impressed so far at all. Kaberle should be traded, but I think we are stuck w/ Wallin. I am hoping to see more of Babchuk & Melichar to see if they are ready to be 3rd pairing guys. Rodney will probably be sent to Albany in a few days, but I really love the toughness & energy Conboy brings to the team. Hopefully his injury won't keep him out too long, & he'll get a shot to start the year w/ us.

Here are my personal picks as of today (if everyone were healthy):

Pitkanen/Gleason

Corvo/Seidenberg

Melichar/Conboy

Babchuk/Wallin

Seidenberg

Seidenberg has to be in the mix. What else does he have to do to prove to this franchise that he's an asset? I've always been impressed with his game and the reports out of camp are that his play has been top-4-worthy.

Pairings important

Well, maybe I don't have the top six down pat, but the pairings are important. I'm going to go on the assumption that they're looking at Rodney a little more since all the other potential callups on defense were in last year's camp. I think Conboy will go to Albany as well once his injury has healed.
For first pairing, Pitkanen-Gleason is a now brainer. I think we will see Corvo-Wallin as #2, then likely Seidenberg-Melichar, and Babchuk-Kaberle. The biggest key to me is to not pair any of Corvo, Seidenberg, and Kaberle together, as they are all offensive minded and tend to think more about moving the puck forward than securing it. Last year the Seidenberg-Kaberle combination was brutal in front of Ward and directly led to some cheap goals for our opponents.

Pitkanen-Gleason Seidenberg-C

Pitkanen-Gleason
Seidenberg-Corvo
Melichar-Babchuk

Wallin belongs nowhere near an NHL Top 6, let alone a Top 4. Rutherford should just waive him so the coaching staff can resist the temptation of playing him. Kaberle can move the puck but struggles at pretty much everything else.

Rodney has looked good in preseason, but he has spent the bulk of his three pro seasons in the ECHL (rather than the A). Tim Conboy is 26 years old with 19 NHL games played, most of those coming at forward. These two are not NHL defensemen.

That leaves Seidenberg, Melichar and Babchuk to fill out the Top 6.

Last 3 Defensemen

Niclas Wallin, Dennis Seidenberg, Tim Conboy! Wallin - Big hitter, nice shot from the point, keeps people out of the middle. Seidenberg - Big hitter, hard shot, plays with a lot of heart! this guy wants to WIN! Conboy - I was very impressed by him last year when he was called up. He plays hard, doesn't take anything from anybody, and can play up if needed. GO CANES!

Defence

If I was going to base my decision on the level of play in the preseason so far, I would pick Seidenberg, Kaberle and Melichar. Of course, we'll probable carry 7 defensemen (at least), so I think you have to go with Babchuk as well. I'd rather see Conboy, personally, but I think that we'll end up keeping 8 D because both Babchuk and Wallin are on one-way deals. That leaves Conboy and Rodney out of the mix, at least for now. But, considering JR's expected trade of a defenseman or defensemen, this could all change any time now.

Seidneberg has got to be the

Seidneberg has got to be the 4th man for sure, he's been playing great and the staff has showed confidence in him by giving him the "A" for those 2 games.

D Dilemma

I like:
Pitkanen Corvo
Gleason Seidenberg
Babchuk Kaberle
Keep Melichar as the backup guy,
send Rodney to Albany
I would debate keeping Conboy because he can go both ways, but he does have a 2 way contract so the only choice may be Albany.
Wallin has not looked good. It's time to cut ties.

Come October 10th....

You got my vote.

My pick on D.....

Pitkanen-Gleason
This one is quite obvious.

Corvo-Seidenberg
The Wallin and Corvo experiment failed miserably. Seidenberg has been playing great as he did last year, and its time he gets a shot. Corvo needs someone who is solid, someone he doesn't have to cover up for, and at this moment from what I've seen, Seidenberg should be the guy for him.

Babchuk-Wallin/Melichar
Good 3rd pairing to throw the body.

Healthy Scratches:
Kaberle
Wallin/Melichar

Have to be honest, I had no clue who Rodney was yesterday. Does he have a 2-way?

Rodney

Rodney was signed in May to a two way.. search on the canes web site to find the announcement.

From where I was sitting:

From where I was sitting:  The Rodney kid was one of the best D-men on the ice throughout.  He played hard and seemed to keep it simple....  It's good to know that we have a guy like that to call up if we end up needing to be Deep...

4-6

Let them fight it out, whoever plays best should be in the lineup. It's nice to have the depth, we'll probably be plagued with injuries all season.

Defence Choices

Well seing that you Already have given us 3 the job as a armchair coach is find 3 that will match or compliment those 3...and my 3 choices are : Wallin,Conboy,Babchuck. Why ? Look at their numbers as individuals...while they don't lok pretty if you set them side by side...but if they were to work out together as a group...on the ice where it would really count...we could see some positive results! Good Question Chip !!

Go Canes !!

Top Four?

Should include The Burg.  No question.  He has earned it.

I think you have to break

I think you have to break up Pitkanen and Gleason. Put one of them with Wallin.

Gleason/Corvo
Pitkanen/Wallin
Seidenberg/Babchuk

Leave all others on speed dial....and move Kaberle ASAP
