Monday debate: Changes on the blue line

Bookmark and Share

While I'm not sure anything could draw the response that last week's debate about parking did, let's put the focus back on the ice.

I have a couple reader suggestions in hand (keep sending them to ldecock@newsobserver.com) but wanted to throw this out there for consideration:

The Hurricanes went into the summer with the remodeling of their defensive corps as the top priority. Now, with Glen Wesley and Bret Hedican gone (as well as Erik Cole) and Joni Pitkanen, Anton Babchuk and Josef Melichar here, how did they do?

Have at it.

Blue Line Changes

Younger, taller, and heavier are all good. Melichar and Babchuk are on one year deals, should be well motivated given the enormous free agent payouts given this year to D like Redden, Commodore, Hainsey, and Finger. With the Cane's low budget and the high free agent salaries, retooling the blue line with 3 players - all with upside - for $5.5M total per year is an excellent move by Rutherford (and Francis?) that is underappreciated. If these reclamation projects work out as well as last year's (Samsonov, Ruutu) then we'll all be quite happy. Would we be better off with the single blue chip D that $5.5M/yr buys? I think not. In the end, if Melichar and Babchuk do well and stay with the franchise, good; do well and don't want to stay, they're valuable trade bait before the season is over; don't do well, it is the waiver wire with little impact and the AHL talent gets an early shot. Suggest Pitkanen, because of his potential, high salary and three year contract, is the key to the success of these deals.

JR did the best he could w/

JR did the best he could w/ the salary restrictions he has to work w/. Pitkanen is a legit top-4 d-man w/ the potential to be a #1. When was the last time we had that? When was the last time we had a legit top-pairing(Gleason-Pitkanen)? The jury is out on how Pitkanen responds to a new system he should excel in. The rest of the D acquisitions are pretty much the best bang we could have gotten for our buck. If Babchuk has learned to hit the net w/ that cannon of his as well as hit the other teams' players, I'd feel comfortable w/ him on the 2nd pairing. Maybe a Babchuk-Wallin/Melichar pairing would work. Who knows if Wallin or Melichar is up to top 4 minutes, but someone will have to step up. I'd put Corvo-Seidenberg on the 3rd pairing. Sure Corvo is going to get his 20mins a night w/ pp time; I'd just feel more comfortable w/ him getting his ES time against the other teams' 3rd and 4th lines. Kabs hopefully will be shipped off for a pick before the season starts. A first PP unit w/ Corvo and Pitkanen on the points has me salivating for the season to start. D-men who can actually play the point on the PP! Amazing idea! The only question mark I really see is who is going to step into the top 4 out of Babchuk, Wallin, Melichar or Seidenberg?

Going "Green"

JR did it by recycling Melichar and Babchuk.

I am a bit surprised that he didn't pursue David Hale. He signed cheaper than Melichar and Babchuk and would have been a good stay at home defenseman. It's even more surprising considering Rutherford was prepared to trade Sean Hill for Hale a few years back.

I guess we will see.

defense

As far as the changes that the Canes have gone through this summer, they're either going to work, or we're going to go boom and turn back into a swiss-cheese-defense.
hopefully Joni Pitkanen will adjust well to the fanbase and do really well sort of like Samsonov last season.
I wouldn't depend to heavily on miracles from Melichar or Babchuk but we shall see once the season starts. I'm excited about Corvo (think how good our power play will be) and I think Gleason will be very very exciting. I'm not very excited about Wallin or Kaberle, but hopefully we'll be able to make another deal and dump him.
Hopefully any mistakes made by the d-men will be covered up by the hefty number of goals eric staal will (hopefully) score.

What about the pairings?

i can't believe no one has brought up the most important subject....the pairings. When our D has been healthy and able to develop as a pairing we have seen above average results from average players, ie Hedican-Commodore during '06 campaign, they were awesome the last half of season and into playoffs. Gleason-Wallin during second half of dreadful '07 campaign, these two developed into a legit shut-down pair. Heck, even look to last spring and what Corvo's arrival did to the play of Kaberle....point is we have a very intriguing mix of guys on the blue line. I'll just throw this out there....Gleason-CorvoPittkanen-WallinKaberle-BabchukSubstitute either Melicar or Seidenberg for Kaberle if traded.

Bigger and Younger Equals Better

I like the changes. Overall we have a bigger, younger, and faster group of defensemen. We'll get pucks out of our zone better, keep the goalie harassment level down, and improve the power play. The additions should help Gleason, Wallin, and Seidenberg also because they won't have to log as many minutes and take a beating over the long haul.

It will also help our general toughness greatly. Brookbank will have more muscle around to back him up. This should keep our forwards more healthy too. Teams won't be pushing us around this year like they have in the past, yet we've actually improved the overall team speed of a team already considered to be one of the fastest. That could be a deadly combination from our opponents perspective.

Changes = Upgrade

On paper the changes JR made look to be an upgrade. We finally have a legit top pair in Gleason and Pitkanen. We finally have puck movers in Corvo and Pitkanen. We got bigger by adding Babchuk and Melichar.

As for Wallin, for the price he is good to have. He isn't as bad as most make him out to be. Yes, there were times I found myself screaming at him, but I also screamed at Cole sometimes. Paying Wallin $1.75M to be a third pairing defenseman, is not horrible.

We won the cup with no big names on defense and that's b/c the team played defense by committee. Cullen was on 99.9 and he said during the Cup year, the forwards were just as responsible in their own end as were the defense. If the team buys into that again and the forwards take responsibility on defense, this team will make the playoffs. If not, then we will be on the outside looking in again.

Incomplete

I like the Pitkanen move, but the rest of the moves feel like spare parts and some hope. I think we are missing another top 4 guy to got with Pitkanen, Corvo, and Gleason. The remainder of the guys are bottom pairing/press box guys until the prove otherwise.

I'd love to see us move Kaberle and one of the other guys for a proven, stay at home top 4 guy (probably wishful thinking)--even if he has no offensive upside.

Then, let guys like Wallin, Babchuk, etc. prove their value in a lower pressure role and push the guys to move up. Babchuk could develop still, but needs lower pressure. Same with Seidenberg. We seem to send guys from sitting in the press box to playing 20 minutes a night and then wonder why they make some mistakes. More top end quality would help with that.

Mixed Bag

OK ... Pitkanen was a good get. Carolina has needed this type of defenseman since well before the Whale moved south in 1997, so Erik Cole in his (probable) last contract year wasn't too steep a price. Pitkanen has all the tools and is still a young player despite his experience level. Carolina just flat had to add this kind of player on the blueline. As for the rest ... I really don't think we're hitting on much. Wesley was still a reliable penalty killer even if his wheels had slowed over the last two seasons. Melichar, Babchuck, Wallin, and Kaberle are all 5/6 guys at this stage of their careers and That means that there's no real natural fit for the "other" guy in the top two pairings to go with Pitkanen, Corvo and Gleason. Those three are a nice start, but the depth worries me.

Grading the defense...B

We needed 2 high-end D going into the off-season. The Pitkanen deal was a really good one- he's the go-to offensive/PP guy we needed to add to Corvo. The other guy we needed was a big-time physical presence. I am not sure that Melichar provides that, as I don't know very much about him. I was never fond of Babchuk at all, & he was never very physical for his size. I would've rather had one good player instead of these 2, but I am willing to give them a chance. Hopefully at least one of them will pan-out. Assuming Frank is moved, we've got Corvo, Pitkanen, Gleason, Wallin, Seidenberg, Babchuk, & Melichar. Overall, I think we have improved. All things considered, I think Rutherford does a pretty good job doing the best he can for the $ he has. It is so easy to drool over the big names & dish out $6 or 7 million a year (deals which often backfire), but it takes a lot more savvy to build a team on a tighter budget.

Wrong Guys

I like Pitkanen but don't like giving up Erik Cole, the move makes sense and we probably had to do it. Adding Melicar & Babchuk seems like a waste of money (around $2 million). Both guys have proven at the NHL level that they are too slow, take too many obstruction penalties (hooking, holding , tripping), and combine for career plus/minus totals of -40 (Bab's -14/Mel -26). These two are not going to keep pucks out of our net and will not add significant offense.

Pitkanen may have "crumpled

Pitkanen may have "crumpled under the pressure" in Philly, but that's nothing to worry about here, our fans show a helluva lot more brotherly love than Philly fans. I think he'll do fine, he is ridiculously talented, but apparently is tough to coach. I think PL is good at getting the most out of his players so he should excel here. I have no idea if Babchuk was a good pick-up, but if he hasn't changed much since 2 years ago, it will be a disaster. Still, he is better than Wallin in any case. Seidenberg is our most underrated defenseman- no one gives him any credit but he is a solid defenseman. I really don't know too much about Melichar, but I haven't heard much good... I think as long as Gleason continues his tremendous development and Pitkanen shows up, our defense will be much better than the sorry group of last year.

My Two Cents

Aaron Ward was on the radar, but he re-signed before becoming a free agent. It was never possible to pick him up.

I personally would have liked to of seen us sign Mark Streit. He signed a 5-year 20.5 million dollar deal to play for the Islanders. I have to believe that he'd of signed here for the same terms (unless he drank Garth Snow's Kool-Aid). Signing him would have meant some combination of Melichar and Babchuk wouldn't have been signed. Also, it would have given us a d-corp of Gleason, Corvo, Pitkanen, Seidenburg, Streit and Wallin (assuming Kaberle gets traded, like we know he will) plus a Rat from Albany or maybe Babchuk as the 7-th. Couple that with the offense we have and we're at least in the running to finish second to Detroit.

Also, Keith Aucoin is not a top two line player. He can't replace what Cole did when healthy (which he hasn't been for a while now). He was a good depth guy, but that's it.

I think JR did a great job,

I think JR did a great job, especially with the salary restrictions he was working with. We now have two top flier, young defensemen with Pitkanen and Gleason and one of the best offensive defensemen in Corvo. Anton Babchuck has enough upside to be another top notch defensemen if he matures. Thats some potential elite talent in 4 defensemen. Melichar adds great depth and is still a huge upgrade over a guy like Wesley. Wallin can still play and is a great locker room guy, and Seidenberg has the talent to start but also gives us some great depth that we haven't had in a while. Compare this defensive front to that of 2006 and I'd say JR did a great job. I can't wait.

Melichar can't tie Wesley's

Melichar can't lace Wesley's skates, but I'd rather see Melichar on 3rd-pairing D than Matt Cullen or Scott Walker who are probably our emergency D's, now that Cole is gone.

I have much love and respect

I have much love and respect for Glen Wesley, but perhaps you weren't watching the last couple seasons, because I was and dude looked ooold out there.

I watched almost every game.

I watched almost every game. Definitely, Wesley had lost a step in 2006-07 and lost another in 2007-08. But the comparison was with Melichar, who is a journeyman placeholder... no Lidstrom!

Needs work.

Melichar. Please--the Hurricanes could have done better than him, IMO. And I also think that they could have and should have shelled out the dosh for Aaron Ward, but of course they decided to nickel-and-dime it again.

I reserve final judgment of Pitkanen until mid-season, but I'm also bracing for the inevitable screaming that will ensue when our defence turns out, once again, to be not so great.

Ward Unavailable

Ward is signed by Boston for the next 2 years at $2.5, out of our range.  The Canes are already over budget.  While they could have done better than Melichar - let's keep in mind that even decent defenseman were scoring major jack they had no business getting.  I like Mike Commodore too, but what he got from Columbus was stupid.  Melichar or "Wild Thing" Babchuck may be trade bait somewhere down there line.  As long as Melichar doesn't make stupid passes and blocks shots - I'm good with that.  Why is it that most people think that all d-men need to score 30 points.  Wesley certainly wasn't doing that and nobody gave #2 any grief.  Wallin doesn't score 10 points a year but he is solid and doesn't make mistakes.  That's all we can hope for out of Melichar.

Wallin doesn't make

Wallin doesn't make mistakes?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gt39rrc-bU

That is just one that comes to mind

Ok...

Sorry - what I meant to say is Walling doesn't make too many horrible mistakes.  Yes, just like "any" player, they are going to have moments.  Give Wallin credit though - he doesn't take too many stupid penalties.  Cole had more than him last year.  But like everyone else - he is prone to mistakes.

Wallin will also bang a guy

Wallin will also bang a guy in the corner to keep the cycle down or at least make the other team think about playing the puck in the corners.     At $1.75 a year, he is a steal.

Aaron Ward was NOT the answer

Melichar is about adressing one need and one need only.  Depth.  He is cheep and serviceable as a number 7 alternative.  Seids is going to see ice time over Melichar, unless Melichar proves otherwise.  Aaron Ward is nota  dpeth defenseman at this point in his career and deserves better ( i.e. the deal hegot in Boston)

Aaron Ward plays like an

  • Aaron Ward plays like an All-Star the final year of his contracts and is horrible all other years. Unless he was going to sign a one year deal (not!) this would have been a  waste of $3,000,000.

Gleason, Corvo, Pitkanen and

Gleason, Corvo, Pitkanen and Babchuk are good moves. Wallin's history of groin and "lower body" issues along with Melichar's wonky shoulder, makes me wonder about our stay-at-home, physicality on defense-- is Seidenberg up to the challenge? Wish we'd see a big body-- perhaps a Hal Gill type to compliment the others. Oh, well! Overall, JR's moves for younger guys and getting Gleason and Pitkanen to sign longer term contracts (without offering a no-trade clause/no movement clause) were nice. Given the trades (getting 2 puck moving d-men), bringing Babchuk back and even the signing of Melichar, Kaberle is the obvious odd man out-- too bad two seasons with his shoulder have made him the Cane most likely to be traded.

Great (except for one problem)

I think that Jim Rutherford made the right moves in going out and getting the right guys for our team. Joni Pitkanen is an offensive weapon who struggled last year. So was Sergei Samsonov, and look what happened there. Anton Babchuck had a great season over in Russia, and he needed some serious playing time to get back on track. Josef Melichar is a depth guy with NHL experience. We also resigned Conboy, who played well last year as an injury replacement. This all would be perfect except for the fact that we did not resign Keith Aucoin. He probably would have been a good replacement for Erik Cole. Keith doesn't have the physical side that Erik does, but he has energy that the top 2 lines desperately need with guys like Brindy, Whitney, and Samsonov. Staal needs to become more of an energy player and physical to make the Cole trade worth it.

uhh

Keith Aucoin an Erik Cole replacement? Can I have some of what you're smoking?

Little energy guy ≠ Big power forward.

What I Meant Was...

what i'm talking about as replacement as in replacement in offense. Aucoin showed at the minor league level that he has got skill. And he played well up here last year. That's why I said that guys like Staal have got to add that physical element to their game. Maybe I should have said that in my original post so guys like you wouldn't be confused.

OK now guys

Let's all put our internet muscles away.  Keith is proven at the AHL level but has never show the ability to consistently produce at the nhl level, let alone on a 2nd line.  anyone remember Marty Murray,  He put up good numbers in the A, but they did not exactly convert to success in the bigs. Their numbers are not that different ( barring that 99 point season aucoin had )

I see, but...

Look who all else put up good numbers in AAA and are playing NHL hockey right now. Our own Eric Staal (77 points-77 games), Jason Spezza (117-80), retired Tim Taylor won a scoring title in 93-94. Anybody know who Gilles Villemure is? He was a MVP in AHL play in 1968-69 and 1969-70, and then shared the Vezina in '71 with Eddie Giacomin and made the All-Star Team 3 times. Johnny Bower was a 3-time MVP consecutively in AAA hockey, and he's in the Hall of Fame. True, these guys came from a while ago, but it still existed.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here. I'm trying to prove my point that it can happen.

Lockout Year

If you are you quoting Stall and Spezza's stats in the lockout year, that a bit of a stretch.  These guys were already legit NHL'ers, so it's not like they were playing in the AHL looking to move up.  Besides neither Stall nor Spezza are on the smallish size like Aucoin.

No fight picked =)

i agree, but the fault in your argument is that the individuals you site as examples, Spezza & Staal, boith very quickly seized their r roster spots with there play.  I would say Tim Taylor was always a role player who was an excellent Locker Room guy ( that is the only reason he wore the C).  I really liked Aucoin too, but he is, at the nhl level, a complimentary peice at best.

Since the 2005-2006 season,

Since the 2005-2006 season, the depth of thedefense has been a major concern with all the injuries - the shoulder injuries to Kaberle & Wallin, the back & hip problems to Hedican, and Siedenberg & Gleason foot problems along with the unknown bumps & bruises. With the changes that Rutherford has made to the defense over the last 5 months or so, he has added youth (major need to limit time due to injuries), more puck handling & shooting skills (a depth we lacked for many years) and more physicality (it appeared that some of our defense would rather finesse the puck away from the opposing team instead of punishing them). While we are definitely an offensive minded team, we still need a defense that can hold its own in the defensive end while adding an offensive threat at any given time. While Wes & Brett had the ability to add the offensive threats at times, the seasons took their toll on them and they appeared to lose a lot of that ability as the season wore on.

I agree...

I agree with gofor, while it is hard to say what WILL happen, JR did what he set out to do and that is to change the blueline almost completely. I think overall we have a really good team and players of all sports tend to step it up when they know they have a winning product.

As for the previous comment about Cole being a hefty price to pay, i would disagree. Cole was a gonner next summer anyway and his numbers have been in decline. A souped up defense can now let the offensive lines concentrat on the attack and not having to hang back while we get scored on.

Gamble

I think we are counting on a lot of Ifs. If Babchuck shows up mature and mentally ready, If Pitkanen plays to his potential, If Gleason continues to grow into a shutdown specialist, if Melichar doesn't live up to his reputation as a liability. I would have loved to have seen seen us augment the D with some proven talent, but I aint the one who controls the purse strings or answers for it when paying out does not pay off.

Blue Line Changes

JR has tried to rebuild the blueline this summer, but the proof will be in the pudding once the games begin. Pitkanen was the guy on Rutherford's radar all along, he is young, skilled and still has plenty of upside as a top defenseman in the NHL under the right system. Babchuk has size and strength and a wicked shot, time will tell if he has matured into a regular NHL blueliner. Melichar is a wildcard with his shoulder problems, but he is not a bad option as a sixth or seventh defenseman. I think the Canes needed to swap out either Kaberle or Wallin for a bigger, stronger defensive defenseman, and a guy like Jason Smith would have been the perfect fit this summer to play alongside Gleason, Corvo, Pitkanen and company.

Blue Line Changes

It's Jr's job to be placing anyone anywhere expect on the team Isn't that the Couch's Job ? Peter's Job is to tell Jr what is needed...and JR the gofer dude...is supposed to try and get what is needed...we should have keep Aucoin...and left Mr. bad wris what's his name ( arrrggg a senior moment ! ) alone...as i have said before the team owner Mr. K really must love JR...I still want to tar and feather him...but the prelim out lines of possible 1-4 lines has merit ...even though i do hate to admit that...:-0

Go Canes !!

hm

id say its ok.

erik cole is a hefty price to pay if pitkanen doesnt come through for us.

tim gleason is pullin through, but early on we all wondered if jack johnson was too hefty a price, jack johnson is no where near the price of Col, so who knows.

and there is a lot of melichar bashing going on out there. maybe thats bad, maybe thats good, we will see.

Blue line changes

Jim Rutherford did exactly what he needed to do.   Whether it will turn out as planned depends largely on Pitkanen.  If he plays with passion and intensity, we will look back at the Cole trade as being one of Rutherford's finest moments as GM.  Babchuk showed a great deal of skill and potential during his time with the Canes.  Assuming he has matured some emotionally, he should be good.  I don't know much about Melichar, but I understand he loves to hit.  Adding some physicality to our defense has to be a good thing.

Overall, I think the D's in much better shape than 12 months ago.  If they mesh well, the Canes will be very tough to play against.

Time will tell

I live in Philly, and I can tell you that a young Pitkanen crumpled under the pressure here.  I hope the couple years have toughened him mentally, he has the physical skills to be great. Babchuk could help the power play, Melichar I expect is here for depth only, if everything goes well I think he'll be a healthy scratch. I think we've been stuck ever since Wallin signed that last contract - he's brought the unit down ever since. I think you can look for Seidenberg and Gleason to have good years, and Corvo to help, hopefully bringing Pitkanen up to his potential. I think we'll miss Hedican's skating, so here's hoping the rest of the unit contributes their share.
