Monday debate: backing up Ward

Bookmark and Share
Tags: Canes Now

Canes goaltender Cam Ward is due to return from injury this week, and likely to start Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils.

Question: who would you rather have as Ward's backup, Manny Legace or Michael Leighton?

Leighton has a one-way contract and Legace a two-way, so it probably will be a business decision for the Canes.  But which one would you rather have as the No. 2 guy?

The floor is open.

business decision

I expect the Canes to waive Leighton (maybe they already have according to AD). If no one picks him up, then I think Legace will be reassigned to Albany as a money-saving move. Initially, that move would just be to buy time and see how well Cam Ward comes back from his injury. If Ward is able to play 19 out of every 20 games, it doesn't matter who the back up is. Legace would still be in the organization and available for a call up in case Cam Ward got hurt again. If Ward isn't able to play as much as he usually does right away, then the Canes will have a more difficult decision to make. I think they will want Legace to be the back up in that case so they will have to figure out what to do with Leighton. Ideally, trade him for a prospect. If that doesn't work, buy out his contract.

Leighton Reported to be put on Waivers

The reports are that Leighton has been put on waivers.

At least that is what Bob McKenzie is reporting. Probably more reports to follow.

Legace - hands down

Leighton: 1-win 4-losses, 4.29 GAA, .848 Save %
Legace: 3-wins, 4-losses, 3.20 GAA, .894 Save %

Legace

As much as I like Michael Leighton as a person, I always feel much better when I see Manny in net. Michael has never proven himself as Cam's backup.

It's Manny

Michael Leighton has never proven that he can do the job between the pipes. Manny Legace, while older, has a ton more experience, and would be a good mentor for Cam, to help him through the times when he struggles. It's a no-brainer to me, it's got to be Legace.

Legace

I don't know if it matters at this point, but Manny's played better and he probably gives a better chance to win on any given night as a backup. In any case, whoever doesn't get the job probably will never see the NHL again.

back up

Based on what I've seen out of Leighton and Legace, I would go with Legace. The players in front of him seem to have more confidence in him and, save for that little episode in the Caps game, he's better fundamentally. The game against Vancouver was Legace's best so far. The first goal was soft, but he made many good/great saves early on to keep the 'Canes in the game and made several more saves to preserve the lead. The other two goals weren't his fault.

I agree

It's refreshing to have "just the facts" articles rather than incessant speculating, rumormongering, and editorializing that goes on elsewhere- most notably in Toronto.

I think Legace will be the back up. Leighton hasn't proven he can step in if needed.

Legace. If there is interest

Legace. If there is interest in either Legace or Leighton prior to the trade deadline, trade him and give Peters a try-out at the end of the season.

Personally, i got it down to

These choices:1. waive both, bring up peters so he can see and find out first hand just what it will take to make it at the NHL level seeing the Canes are in a rebuilding mode.
2.Buy out Lagace's contract and cut him loose so he can go see about catching on with another team someplace, without doing or going through the waiver wire
3. Buy out Lagace's contract, waive Leighton and still bring up peters... and see how that goes...as Peters & Murph are working hard and well there in Albany that's what i'd consider doing...BTW...the rats won again last night...4-1

Manny Legace

although very reasonable arguments exist either way, my belief is that the coaches and management have more faith in Legace than in Leighton. With Peters and Murphy showing signs that eventually they can serve as credible back-ups to Ward, I think Leighton is going to be the one who is put on waivers. Who knows, maybe Laviolette will want Leighton in Philly.

Hey AD

you know you may very well have a good point there...but we'll just have to sit back, wait and see...Murphy in the last couple of outings has donme really well...Peters has too...but if i was on the bench...I'd call up Peters first...why ?/ not sure...just a hunch...nothing more...Thanks again for the added insights..

Does N&O Fear The Canes? What Does the N&O Think?

I understand we're a small market and newspaper budgets have been cut back. And, Chip does a good job "reporting." But what about editorializing? Does the N&O fear the Canes if a bad word was written about them?

Is the N&O afraid they're going to get locked out of the locker room? Rarely do we hear from Luke anymore or any of the others.
If this was a major market, even as far north as Philly, there would be articles abound, dissecting this team, and even ... yes, dissecting the financial future of this team.

During this lousy season, I don't think there's been on article that talks about the team's performance. But for the N&O, it's "just the facts."
The operation of the Canes is one big secret...and there's a hell of a lot of skeletons in the closet, just waiting to be uncovered ... if you've got the courage to do so.

The N&O and the Hurricanes

Luke DeCock has never been known to shy away from rendering  candid, if not harsh at times, opinions about the Hurricanes.  If I am correct, and I may not be correct on this,  Chip is a reporter rather than a commentator.  It also may be that Chip prefers the role of raising questions rather than rendering opinions and judgments.

I like the job Chip is doing in his reporting of the Hurricanes.  I enjoy his insights and appreciate his openness.

Agree on Chip

I agree with you on Chip. Anyone know how the Durham paper covers the Canes or Cary?

Manny Legace

Manny Legace, no questions asked.
