Monday debate: an open forum

As the events of Friday proved again, tragically, there are things a lot more important and meaninfgul than sports. Many thoughts and prayers are with the people of Newtown, Conn.

With that in mind, there is no sense in having a Monday debate on a CBA dispute or canceled NHL games or legal filings. It's an open forum today. Feel free to express your feelings about whatever is on your mind.

Is anyone home?

Tried to log onto the iPad version of the N&O, for which I have already paid for a one-year's subscription, this morning. There's new password protection, but it doesn't recognize the very I.D. and password that I just used to sign in here. Tried calling the paper and the wait was more than 20 minutes of elevator music.

Here's a tip, N&O: If you are going to change the sign-in procedure for paying customers, have someone there to answer the phones when it doesn't work.

I could not even get the

I could not even get the online subscription link to work.

"Negotiation in the classic

"Negotiation in the classic diplomatic sense assumes parties more anxious to agree than to disagree."

 Dean Acheson

There seems little "anxousness" to agree on either side.

Random Thoughts About the USA

The USA as a nation was 236 years old this past July. No one has ever said holding a democracy together would ever be easy. America's survival has been dependent on many sacrifices along the way. I suspect there will be many more sacrifices ahead of this nation.

We are not perfect, far from it. But we are given the right to say we are not perfect and that should mean a great deal. Knowledge that we are not perfect and having the will to correct what can be corrected without undue infringement on the basic individual rights we enjoy has always been the key to what makes America work.

We cannot live in the past totally. We have to keep the best of our past but we also have to evolve and adapt or we die as a viable self-governed nation.

I am optimistic America will survive as a democratic model to the rest of the world.

Happy Holiday Season to All......

Times gone by...

I was in high school in the fifties.  Times seemed easier, more friendly, more caring then.  Maybe because we did not have the media reporting every horrible thing that happens in the world 24/7.  Maybe the world has always been comprised of greedy, out for yourself people who thrive on getting "one up on you".  I don't know.  I don't understand how anyone can kill a child, harm an animal, destroy the lives of people they don't even know.....for what purpose?  I do know that society as a whole has certainly changed over the years.  It seems to have become more uncaring, unfriendly....people that have lived across the street from you or even next door for years are total strangers to you.  People more and more are concerned only about their happiness, their life, their wants.  Today I truly think that there are many more very lonely people around because everyone seems to shut down to everything except their own wants and needs.  It is sad.   If I could have one wish granted this wonderful season of our Savior's birth, I would wish that everyone take a day to really look around them and pay attention to the small things they could do to make someone else's day a little brighter.  I hope all my hockey friends have a peaceful, loving and thankful Christmas.  Let's have a few days of no arguing, no threats, no discussions of money and power.......just a little peace.

Merry Christmas

Have a joyous and festive holiday season filled with love and remembrance, and especially thanks for the gift given to us on this day.
