The Canes have played 11 games, have a 6-3-2 record and the lead in the Southeast Division. They've done it despite injuries, despite a six-game road trip.
OK, it's still early, but who has been the Canes' most valuable player in the first 11 games? Who provides not just the stats, but also the intangibles, and has been the most consistent, game after game?
The floor is open.

the real MVP
Tue, 11/04/2008 - 12:28 — wylde4canes (not verified)Is Lady Luck. I do not think any of the games we have won, except for St Louis, have really been due to any particular outstanding effort by one or all members of the team. The orle palyers have been very good role players, and the stars have been mostly absent. Eventually your role players are going to cool off, then what?
Coaching Staff
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 17:00 — Chard (not verified)Give the MVP to the coaching staff. They've kept this group together through injury and an extended road trip. Not to mention they have a ton of new players since the trade deadline last year, so they are working to get all the pieces to fit. Nice job.
Your all nuts...Esteban has
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 14:48 — Anonymous (not verified)Your all nuts...Esteban has been the MVP so far...in his mind he is the greatest and so far this season...this board and the hockey season in general has been all about Esteban.
Esteban bows and waves to the crowd as he skates off...

Hit the showers...and go see the doc...and get a hi colonic...that might improve your thinking process instead of sitting there doing a "thinker" imitation at a local museum...And i thank you for kindness, openess and being honest as well as your enouragement.
Go Canes !!
Joe Corvo, Wallin or Gleason
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 14:22 — Anonymous (not verified)After watching the game on Sunday against the Leafs, the three of them really stopped the Leafs from about the end of period one to the end. Corvo's shot is incredible. It's got to give goalies nightmares.
These guys finally give us defense and toughness.. now if we can get the boys up front to play.....
Props to Wallin, Bayda
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 13:03 — Anonymous (not verified)Staal is the always the MVP of our team, even if he isn't playing up to his full potential. He's the guy we can't afford to lose, and thus, the most valuable. That said, I think our best players so far, based on meeting and exceeding what was expected of them, are Wallin & Bayda. Wallin (6 A, +8) has been our steadiest defenseman on a lot of nights, and has really responded to all of our questions of whether or not he still belongs on our team. Bayda (2 G, 2 A, +5) has brought consistent energy and a well-rounded game.
I'm going to vote for Corvo
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 13:02 — Anonymous (not verified)He may not have the points on the board, but I think he changes the completion of the game. Unlike the other defenseman, when he tees up it creates excitement and opportunity.
For what it's worth.
Brind'Amour?
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 11:16 — Anonymous (not verified)Yeha, he may be winning faceoffs, but have you seen his +/-? He is a -9. that is the worst on the team. That speaks more to me than winning faceoffs.
Go with consistency
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 11:07 — Fat Eagle (not verified)I have to go with the guys who have been the most consistent. As many have already said, the defense leads the way. Gleason, Wallin and Seids have all been great and we'd have a losing record if it wasn't for these guys playing well at both ends of the ice.
On offence, I think Bayda is making the most of this opportunity in a limited role. But if our stars (Staal, Whitney and Brindy) don't start producing on a consistent basis, the role players won't be able to keep this team afloat.
I also agree that Leighton is a much needed improvement over Graham but how difficult should it be to replace the worst backup in the league?
Interesting
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 10:16 — Anonymous (not verified)Interesting that nobody is naming Staal, and I'm in agreement. I doubt players ever read this board, but I wish once in a while they did. Staal needs to make a decision whether he's going to be one of the leagues best players or simply another solid helper. His work ethic is hurting. He isn't being physical. He cuts corners when he can. He consistently commits a penalty at critical times (2 minutes left in the game, OT, man advantage). And he spends too much time pouting when things don't go his way. If he gets pick-pocketed, he just drifts around until he decides to get back in the game. If he's tripped or hit hard, he glides around on the ground hoping a penalty will be called, and when it isn't, he takes another few seconds to get back up and off the ice. He seems to have a sense of entitlement that is disappointing. I really want to see him play well, not only because his salary could pay for 2 decent players, but also because he IS a good player.
Now this next comment might stir up some old arguments, but I think he's showing the after-effects of rooming w/ Cole for too long (questionable work ethic, selfish play). Hopefully this will wear off and he'll get back to playing for the team and not for himself.
I completely agree with
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 16:48 — Anonymous (not verified)I completely agree with that entire first paragraph. And it's too bad because when he's playing to his potential he can be one of the best in the league.
As far as rooming with Cole, I neither agree nor disagree...., for what that's worth.
Me too
Tue, 11/04/2008 - 00:43 — Anonymous (not verified)I agree, there's so much potential in this team. Sometimes I worry if they've tuned Lavi out?
But the rooming with Cole stuff..what does that mean.
Staal has had one so-so game (Oilers). Otherwise he's been great. He's an awesome player who will just keep getting better. I don't understand, some fans just seem to not like him? I am really asking, what is the story here. He works hard, always has. If it's a personality thing, I have spoken to him many times & he's always been perfectly nice.
Rooming w/ Cole
Tue, 11/04/2008 - 08:53 — Anonymous (not verified)The point of this statement is not simply that he roomed w/ Cole, but that they were close friends. Cole was a sort of mentor to a young Staal. Cole would take an entire game off and then be the last guy on the ice giving high-fives. He wanted to be a team leader, but didn't want to lead. He played when he felt like it. This type of play can start to rub off on others. Staal is a nice guy, and he can demonstrate that in tough times he can bring a team together and lead by example. This year, however, his engine is in neutral.
Plus, the dude looks too skinny. I think he's on the Cam Ward veggie diet. He needs a sandwich! If he could put on 10 lbs of muscle, he'd have a much better presence on the ice.
Irony
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 10:05 — JRs_FaultIn a season where the emphasis was on the addition of the puck moving defensemen, the key guys thus far have been Gleason, Wallin & Seidenberg, in no particular order.
Outside of Bayda & Sutter, I don't think any of the forwards merit a mention, at this point in the year. Virtually all of them are playing below potential.
Coaching Staff
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 09:48 — CC (not verified)I know you did not include the coaches in this as "players" were indicated, However, with the adversity in several areas (injuries)I would give my Kudos to the coaches especially Laviolette and Rowe. I see no clear MVP from the "regular" team players. They are getting the most out of the new ones and the call ups.
Oh my
Tue, 11/04/2008 - 00:17 — Anonymous (not verified)No. The pp & pk are exhibits 1 & 2 for why the coaches aren't in the running for MVP. Want to know why players who've been called up from Albany perform so well? B/c they know they have to work their tails off to stay in the NHL. I mean, Tom Rowe is a swell guy, but Scotty Bowman he ain't. What do Keith Aucoin, Ryan Bayda, Pat Dwyer, Tim Conboy, etc have in common? Well, as far as the kind of game they play, not much. But you better believe none of these guys take a shift off or a minute in the NHL for grante. They do whatever they can to stay here. I agree the boys from Albany deserve a lot of praise, but the coaches? Not so much.
no most improved
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 09:46 — Anonymous (not verified)this isnt most improved,
the question was MVP
your gonna tell me that wallin has been more valuable than Staal?
no way.
staal mvp
really...
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 14:41 — irbefan (not verified)Are you really gonna tell me that you think Staal is an MVP? In my opinion Staal has been invisable during most points of this season! All of his goals have been empty-netters, a lucky bounce, and a great Whitney pass. I believe that Tuomo Ruutu has provided a great spark and Samsonov has actually been a very consistant foward thus far. Thank God for Leighton, Grahame wasn't cutting it!
The Captain
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 09:23 — scomilI'll take Rod Brind'Amour as the mvp at this stage. He has been winning face-offs at a high percentage and, without that, we simply can't win. A couple of the games have been won primarily on goal-tending, so the combined Ward/Leighton approach is working well so far. Seidenberg and Ruutu have really been amazing so far this year too, in addition to others already mentioned here. But as for one player that we'd miss the most - it's got to be the Captain.
BAYDA

Mon, 11/03/2008 - 08:41 — sixnitepkg (not verified)1) D-Berg - not the most improved as some put it, but now getting the icetime to really show what he can do.
2)Wallin - getting put with the right partner has put him back in his element.
MVP Huh ?
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 08:30 — esteban19495. Sutter 4.LaRose 3.Leighton 2.Seidenberg 1.Wallin Then there is the Coach...;-} Go Canes !!
Wallin
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 08:07 — rmmeliWallin - no contest.
Wallin, no hands down at
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 08:05 — FuquayCaniacWallin, no hands down at this point. He is playing some brilliant defenive hockey, and chipping in in the O as well. HUGE suprise over his performance over the past two years. He must have been playing through injury then, and is healthy now. Here's hoping he stays that way!
MVP to Date
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 08:03 — maddertionTie between Wallin and Seidenberg. Wallin has played smart and has even brought some offense to the party. It has also been a joy to watch Seidenberg "cancel" wingers all season. But asked the question again around Thansgiving and the MVP will be Gleason. He's started cruising the blue line like he owns it and I predict a busy November for the cleaning crew as large amounts of slober are deposited on the defensive end glass.
MVP so far
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 07:45 — lewpuls (not verified)The goalies. Easily. If I had to pick one, Leighton, who has done so much better than Grahame.
I agree, what an
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 13:08 — Anonymous (not verified)I agree, what an improvement Leighton is.
I'll say Bayda, too.
Good Question
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 07:15 — Stanley (not verified)I think the consensus would be no one has really stood out offensively. I would have to say Tim Gleason has probably been the most consistent. He appears to have taken on the role of Scotty Walker (since he is out) of the "Hey, no one is gonna mess with our team".
Seidenberg
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 07:02 — Anonymous (not verified)If the coach gave Dennis his due last year in ice time I'd bet the Canes would have made the playoffs. Still has the best clearing and run and gun pass up the middle on the team.
There isn't one MVP thus
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 06:49 — Anonymous (not verified)There isn't one MVP thus far. Collectively, the defense has been good. Bayda and Ruutu consistently bring the attitude and energy I would like to see the team play with. They bring it every game and they hit. No one wants to see their team get pushed around unanswered. Bayda and Ruutu set the tone, in my view.
No MVP in site...yet
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 06:40 — lambo (not verified)There certainly is no forward that deserves MVP status. If I had to choose 1 player, I would say Dennis Seidenberg. He's been eating up minutes, being defensively responsible and getting the job done. It seems to me that he has been the only player that is bringing it night in and night out, with Nick Wallin a close second.
Without looking at the
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 00:30 — caneshockeyfanWithout looking at the numbers... the "role" players are doing a great job, both on offense and defense: Bayda, LaRose, Wallin, Seidenberg, etc. The way Sutter was going before getting injured was great; I hope he can get back to that level soon. Gleason's game seems to be on. Most improved would be Wallin and Kaberle, before he got injured.
But, the best players need to consistently be the best players and that just hasn't happened yet. Staal's numbers have been padded with empty netters. Brind'amour hasn't got going yet. Whitney is brilliant, then disappears. Cullen and Eaves haven't impressed me at all. Samsonov looks good and hopefully that will translate into point production like it did last season.
Somehow, this MASH unit of a team keeps rolling along. The organizational depth has really been the difference between a pretty good start and what could have easily become a disaster with all the injuries.
I agree with caneshockeyfan
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 06:32 — ctillI agree with caneshockeyfan and would add that Ward and Leighton are better than Ward and Grahame were at this point of the season.
I guess that didn't answer
Mon, 11/03/2008 - 00:34 — caneshockeyfanI guess that didn't answer Chip's question, did it? I'll go with Wallin, followed closely by Bayda.
I think the Canes have
Sun, 11/02/2008 - 23:41 — James_I think the Canes have played really like a team- no one has stood out above the rest on a consistent basis. Almost everyone on the roster has had a great game, with only a few exceptions. But I for one don't think I could name an MVP of this team. I suppose a lot of people would say Whitney or Staal.
However, if you asked who the Most Improved Player is so far, that's an easy choice for me: Niclas Wallin.
I have to agree with
Sun, 11/02/2008 - 23:59 — hot rod (not verified)I have to agree with James... no one person has really been a major standout at this point - at least not from an offensive standpoint.
I have to give it to the defense. There are a few who have really stepped up to the plate thus far, Wallin (thank you for showing that you are the player we knew you were capable of being - where was that last year?), Seidenberg (hopefully coming into his own - most improved for my money) and Gleason (looking like a leader and seems like he is becoming as good as I hoped he was going to be).
