McBain agrees to two-year deal

Bookmark and Share

The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with Jamie McBain on a two-year contract that will play the 24-year-old defenseman $1.7 million next season and $1.9 million in 2013-14.

In his third full professional season, McBain led all Carolina defensemen with 19 assists and 27 points.

"Jamie is still a very young player who has established himself as an NHL defenseman," Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said in a statement released today by the team. "He moves the puck well and has shown that he can contribute offensively, especially on the power play."

10th-highest compensated player

I think this makes McBain the 10th-highest compensated player on the team, pending UFA actions. That seems about right. I like his play, and from what I can tell he has good character. Does he have room for improvement? Sure. Most of all, if he learns how to play the first 30 games of a season like he plays the rest, he'll be worth more.
