Maurice atop Isles' list

According to Newsday, former Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice is the first candidate on Islanders general manager Garth Snow's list for the coaching vacancy on Long Island.

The Islanders fired Ted Nolan, who once served on Maurice's coaching staff in Hartford, this week, citing irreconcilable differences in philosophy between Nolan (who wanted more veterans) and Snow (who has been forced by finances to pursue a youth movement).

Newsday has a list of seven candidates:

Gerard Gallant - Current Isles assistant, who coached Columbus for three-plus seasons, has been promised an interview.

Scott Gordon - Won AHL coach of the year honors last season in sixth year as head coach of the Providence Bruins.

Bob Hartley - Fired after 0-6 start in Atlanta after taking Thrashers to the playoffs for the first time; won 2001 Stanley Cup with Colorado; once coached Snow.

Paul Maurice - Fired after Toronto missed the playoffs, but previously had a nine-season run with Hartford/Carolina, reaching the Cup Finals in 2002.

Joel Quenneville - Never had a losing record in 11 seasons with St. Louis and Colorado, but reached conference finals only once in nine playoff trips.

Mike Sullivan - Has two years experience as Boston's head coach from 2003-05, assistant for 2006 U.S. Olympic team, Tampa Bay assistant last season.

John Tortorella - Fired by new Tampa Bay ownership after seven seasons that included 2004 Stanley Cup victory; former Rangers assistant.

Coaching vacancies only

Coaching vacancies only happen when there's a problem, but I hope Maurice doesn't take/get the job on Long Island. That set up is doomed and Maurice doesn't need to go from one lousy organization to another.

Coaching vacancy in Long Island

I agree Maurice is a classy guy...he don't need Snow's guff or grief either...personally give it gallent...he can't do much worse than Nolan did...gee being an internet bench warmer is freakin kool...did anyone bring the root beer & brauts ??? Go Canes !

Maurice atop Isles' list

Somewhere Mike is going berserk. The one area Maurice is well versed in is answering to the holy host of others. Had that with the Leafs and knows how to do the dance. The experience would serve him well if he became the new coach.

Good luck on the Island, Chairman Mo

Gods know you'll need it.
