Officially, Luke DeCock's shoe size is a 12. Unofficially, when it comes to hockey and the Canes ...
Let's be honest. Does Luke know N.C. State sports and the ACC like I do? No. Do I know the Canes and the NHL like Luke? No. He might have been the best beat writer in the league.
Another confession: his shoes will be hard to fill. One thing I can promise is to work hard on the beat. And part of that, hopefully, will be with your help. Come here often. Talk to me. N.C. State fans sure did. Now, I want to hear from you.
One thing I've learned through the years is that Hurricanes fans are loyal and passionate. I've been in the RBC Center many times and I've always believed the atmosphere and noise level at the Canes games were better than at State basketball games.
I'll be there for you, before training camp, at training camp, at the games. I'll be at the practices and the pregame skates. I'll be on the road. I'll be talking to the coaches and the players, to Jim Rutherford and Peter Karmanos. As much as I can, I'll be posting what I hear and see here for you.
Should be exciting. Can't wait.
A Raleigh native, Chip has worked at the N&O since 1979 and is in his second season as the Canes beat writer. He can be reached at chip.alexander@newsobserver.com. You can follow him on Twitter at @ice_chip.

Wed, 10/01/2008 - 14:26 — caniac1026 (not verified)Chip,
Honestly, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I'll stop at N&O.com everyday to hear about my Canes if you've got something to write. Living out of the Triangle, this is all I've got :-p
Good luck, LukeD
Welcome Aboard, Chip
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 11:46 — Avid Kaniac (not verified)Despite some of the apprehensive comments, there are many of us out here in reader-land that respect your long career in sports writing and welcome a fresh perspective. Luke’s done a great job of covering the Canes and facilitating a great blog. And I’m confident that you can continue the tradition and expand upon it.
So now that you’ve got the position, run with it, and run hard! At the moment, the N&O sports pages are filled with coverage of the Olympics and the upcoming football seasons, interspersed occasionally with a little bit of NASCAR and golf articles. As you’ve seen from the readers’ comments to your introduction, the fans of this blog care first and foremost about hockey (although there are quite a few of us that also care about the ACC. Go Wolfpack!). And we’re not seeing much about hockey in the N&O these days. Show us your stuff.
There are lots of stories to be written about the Canes. Training camp is coming up – give us some previews. There are lots of questions about how the new incoming veterans are going to jell with the existing core. Is Rod really recovered and ready? How are the new youngbloods looking? There were some great looking prospects at prospects camp that didn’t get any coverage – but some of them are likely to play a big role in the team’s future.
And who is going to lead them there? Tell us something we don’t know about new assistant coach Tom Rowe and what impact he is likely to have. What will happen with Jeff Daniels going to Albany? What will Laviolette do differently this year to make sure that the Canes don’t fall out of playoff contention at the last minute? Will the return of Jason Karmanos make a difference? Will it cause Daddy to do something he might not otherwise do?
Those of us that are avid hockey fans are in a hot dry desert of news coverage. Slake our thirst! Chip, please show us that you are the number one choice for this position by giving us lots of coverage. Put that puck in the net, soon, frequently and often.

My Advice
Tue, 08/19/2008 - 08:16 — MR (not verified)Very sorry to see Luke go. His articles were solid but his work on this blog was outstanding. He truly grasped the concept of blogging. Frequent, timely, and very detailed info. The folks who read blogs are not looking for the typical post-game articles, they want line-up info before games, they want extra quotes from players, background on stuff that happens during games, practices, and the like. Basically, this is the place to find stuff that is breaking news and won’t make the cut in the regular articles. It’s a place for folks to feel like insiders.
If you can keep this blog up to that standard, as well as keep personal opinions and vendettas out of your work, I’m sure you’ll do fine. I went to State, but I visit this blog and subscribe to the N&O for it’s hockey coverage. Luke has kept me coming back repeatedly. In fact, I have 3 places I go to frequently for hockey news and this is one of them. Hope it stays that way and doesn’t become an old forgotten Favorite link.
Finally
Tue, 08/19/2008 - 00:34 — IRBEfan (not verified)I look forward to finally having a Canes writer who is consistent in his writing. No offense Luke, but you seemed to be ready for the team to relocate after every loss. Every time we won though - it was like we were shoe-ins for the Cup! All I'm looking for is consistency in the coverage in the N&O. As well as that, I look forward to the N$O's articles and the columns in THN (The Hockey News) in sync up. Best of luck to you Chip! You've got my full support!
Equally important as sharing
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 16:32 — Elsker (not verified)Equally important as sharing his hockey knowledge with the fans (some of whom could easily match or even surpass him), Luke managed to make this a "check first" website for me with his timely and frequent updates. For years, I made the rounds to various fanboards to see what was happening during the day, relying on them to birddog out breaking news first. Luke managed to change that habit into checking his blog first, even before heading to those fanboard sites, because he was quick to post what he knew at the moment, even if it was "not much, but I'm digging for more". I would strongly urge you to do the same. Small bite-sized posts will make this website a reader habit, moreso than longer posts that appear less frequently. Thanks, Luke! Benefit of the doubt to you, Chip...for now. But, have to admit I am apprehensive about this change.
Equality In reporting
Thu, 08/21/2008 - 16:03 — esteban1949Well Chip we'll give a tryout...even though you do have some credentials and some experience that could be an asset...Now don't get me wrong sir...Luke was by no means the triangle's hockey god or wizard...But Luke was better than Tripp...hehehe...So what the heck...seeing i live and play over on the real sports side of the old north state...where real football and sports are played...in the Triad...why not give you a shot at this...heck...you must be better than the rest of us here...right ?? Good Luck...and all Kidding aside...Welcome Aboard Sir !!
Cripes people
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 12:39 — aprince27All he was doing was making an analogy...and you folks go crazy about it.
Talk about being a stereotypical thin-skinned Canes fan.
give the guy a break. Best of luck Chip and I, for one, am lookign forward to your coverage of the team.
It has nothing to do with
Tue, 08/19/2008 - 12:15 — C-Leaguer (not verified)It has nothing to do with an analogy or being "thin-skinned". DeCock became a very well respected hockey writer and the LSB here was fantastic. What is dissapointing to us is that a guy, however nice and competent he may be, who is trained in basketball and the ACC is now going to be writing about Hockey.
There aren't a lot of places to get Canes news outside of Hurricanes.com. That's what we Canes fans have enjoyed so much. Another stream of info and another opinion.
In the end, it's about quality. If Chip brings the same quality Luke did then this won't be an issue. If he asks Ron Francis again if he thinks hockey belongs in North Carolina then he's going to drive traffic away from LSB and subscriptions from the N&O.
Get over yourself.
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 15:31 — acidqueenIt was a bad analogy. Not as bad as Caulton Tudor's pathetic attempt to get out of having called Jose Theodore a frog back in 2002, but still a bad analogy.
oh please
Tue, 08/19/2008 - 07:51 — aprince27it's not something to get all worked up over.
I've gotten a chuckle out of yours and a few other folks reaction to him jsut saying 'NC State'.
I didn't know you couldn't follow one and not hte other down here.
Times They Are A Changing
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 10:41 — Carolina_WhalerGood luck and best wishes to Luke, and welcome aboard Chip.
The biggest thing I can tell you as a "Caniac" Chip, is to just keep it about hockey and it will be all good.
Caniacs are just like any other rabid fans around here, we love our team and we care about our team.
Best of luck and hope to see you at some home games.
Some advice
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 08:53 — acidqueenDon't talk about the ACC in this blog--some of us don't give a rat's hindquarters for the ACC unless you're talking about the ACCHL.
Some of us also don't care that you covered State for the N&O. Unless you're talking about State's hockey club (which is a dern good bunch of folks), of course.
Oh yeah--and don't snark at Ron Francis about whether or not hockey belongs here (I haven't forgotten about that little episode).
Just want to throw that out there.
I care
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 12:36 — aprince27Hey now Camille, I care about the ACC and there are a lot of hockey fans here that do care about the ACC.
Isn't saying that Canes fans could careless about the ACC just as bad as saying no one in North Carolina cares about the Canes?
Same line of thinking...just the shoe is on the other foot.
Would you two take your love
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 15:48 — Blue Liner (not verified)Would you two take your love spat off-line. You're boring me to tears!!
Adam, you're clearly so
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 15:30 — acidqueenAdam, you're clearly so busy showing your hindquarters to everyone that you didn't even bother actually reading what I said.
I said "some of us". As in, "more than one, but less than all".
Looks like somebody needs to get over himself.
:-p
Tue, 08/19/2008 - 07:57 — aprince27I read it. But you got so worked up about it. I just had to tweak you about it. And you continue to take the bait. :-p
But to me being all upset over mentioning 'NC State' makes no sense. It's not like he's from Buffalo and making some comment on how there is no need for a franchise down here.
That's why there's a stereotype that Canes fans are very thin-skinned when it comes to things like this.
Ah, so you admit to
Tue, 08/19/2008 - 08:40 — acidqueenAh, so you admit to trolling.
Thanks for letting me know to just skip over any comments you make in the future.
Welcome Chip
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 12:23 — JRs_Fault (not verified)Wow...
Welcome Chip... you'll come to expect this from certain posters here.
I for one have generally appreciated your columns on the Canes, and I will also respect your longevity on the paper's staff (regardless of your past assignments ;^).
I will also remember that we are dealing with real people (whose profession it is to write here on the blog, in the paper, in opinion columns, etc.) and we're not just typing to some autobot with no regards to common notions of respect, dignity and professionalism.
Congrats Luke, Welcome Chip
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 07:46 — Anonymous (not verified)Luke, I've really enjoyed reading this blog and I've appreciated your coverage of the Canes over the years. Best of luck to you in your new responsibiities! Chip, welcome to the beat. Sorry some seem to have a "chip" on their shoulder and can't understand that college basketball and professional hockey CAN co-exist in the hearts and minds of sports fans here. We have room to support excellence in both sports! Just don't treat hockey as an afterthought and remember that the Hurricanes have very dedicated, passionate, knowledgeable fans and we'll all get along fine. Look forward to your reporting and commentary.
Welcome Chip
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 06:54 — CaniacGuy (not verified)Hey Chip, welcome to the world of REAL sports :-) as if anything else counted.
Well, OK ... maybe the Mets count.
And the Jets.
For all the great work Luke's done in covering the 'Canes, thanks. For all the great work we hope (and expect ... no pressure now) Chip's going to do ... thanks Chip. For all the REALLY great stuff the Caniac's have done to support the team, the blogs, and whatever else there is ... thanks Caniac's.
Chip, we'll be fine ... we're on your side. It'll be a fun ride for you.

Sun, 08/17/2008 - 20:31 — Anonymous (not verified)Folks aren't being rude, just protective. Nervously hopeful, apprehensive, and protective.
To echo most others ...
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 17:27 — Anonymous (not verified)yeah I'm not jazzed that you started off your new gig by discussing your ACC basketball coverage. That's not going to impress a lot of folks here. This blog has become a major source of info about the Hurricanes. It will do the N&O, and the Hurricanes, no good at all to have the Hurricanes coverage diminish in any way. I wish you the best and beg you to be as dedicated, and as highly informed and knowledgeable about the sport of hockey, as Luke. The readers here will not be kind otherwise. Best to you.
Looking forward to your contributions
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 16:48 — rhynorat (not verified)Well if there was anyone other than Luke who was going to be covering the Canes for the N&O, glad to see they tapped you on the shoulder. You've done a great job with your Canes-related work in the past, and looking forward to seeing you in action in your new role.
I second what everyone has
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 16:33 — redblackhockeyI second what everyone has already said. Your alleged vast knowledge of NCSU and the ACC amounts to absolutely nothing in this venue.
Frankly, I think you're off on the wrong foot. I know you didn't mean it to come off this way, but your opening remarks sound almost like you're trying to slight Luke or get into some masculinity contest. While you admitted that Luke's shoes are going to be hard to fill, you really should have left out the "Luke doesn't know college basketball" bit.
Now go out and impress us by becoming a good hockey writer.
oh wah
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 07:48 — aprince27Quit sounding like the defeatist hockey fan, imagine if Luke bacame the State beat writer. IT's the same thing.
Get over it.
How about...
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 08:56 — acidqueen...you get over yourself?
see what i mean
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 12:38 — aprince27Camille,
How you are responding is similar to the folks that say no one cares about hockey down here.
Hockey fans don't care about the ACC.
ACC Fans don't care about hockey.
The only difference it is ok for you to say the opposite now? What if he posts about State's club hockey team?
I'm not Camille, but IMO
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 15:31 — Anonymous (not verified)I'm not Camille, but IMO posting about NC State's hockey team in Lord Stanley's Blog is only appropriate if it has something to do with the Carolina Hurricanes or something in the NHL that is relevant to the Hurricanes. If it doesn't relate to the Hurricanes, then post it somewhere else. At the top of Lord Stanley's Blog it says "Get all the latest info on the Carolina Hurricanes..." not "Get all the latest info on ACC hockey teams".
It seems that a lot of
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 16:23 — CaniacforeverIt seems that a lot of people already have burned their Chip Alexander dolls in effigy. I'm getting shades of Aaron Rodgers for Brett Favre here.
Just in that situation, Caniacs, we can't place unreasonable expectations on the replacement of such a great predecessor. It will only serve to close us off from the team even more to distance our only voice from our opinions and jade him from the very base he is covering. I seem to recall our friend with the unintentionally funny last name getting the same kind of treatment upon his appointment.
If you feel that you know his job better than he does, then be sure to send him emails to keep the lines of communication open and help add direction to his coverage where you think there will be room for improvement. However, this is all very premature as we haven't even given him the opportunity to prove his supposed ineptitude. Tough crowd, indeed.
Welcome aboard, Mr. Alexander. After the initial shock has subsided i'm sure you will get a much warmer reception from the fans in the league notorious for such. As long as the single most important coverage trait is there, which is the desire to constantly improve your scope and understanding of the game of hockey, you will have no problems at all keeping this fanbase happy and informed. Sadly, we've seen examples in the past of sleep walkers and deadline buzzer beaters enough to appreciate what we had in Luke and quite a few of us fear that change and possible regression in coverage. But hey, that isn't really your cross to bear until these concerns are either absolved or confirmed.
Keep it honest, keep it informative, and keep us entertained and you'll win over even the toughest faceless critics of this post. Looking forward to seeing what you've got.
Hockey is Life
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 16:00 — FLA Caniac (not verified)Chip, welcome aboard. A piece of advice though. Hockey fans and especially Hurricanes fans are passionate about their sport and team. To all of us there is NO other sport more important than this one and I for one don't care about the others. PLEASE realize that while your reporting and embrace hockey like we do and all will be well with the world. Good luck...
Good luck and welcome
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 15:59 — Anonymous (not verified)Good luck and welcome aboard! I really hope you surprise me, Chip. Right now, I'm feeling cheated-- going from a guy whose hockey intelligence rivaled the best hockey writers from north of the border to a guy who covered the ACC. I care about the NHL and the Hurricanes and hope you'll be able to develop your own hockey creds that make me want to read the News and Observer's sports section or even come to this blog.

Sun, 08/17/2008 - 15:37 — Anonymous (not verified)Now we have to wait for another beat writer to learn hockey? Bummer.
good luck chip
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 15:21 — brooke (not verified)You're going to do a great job, Chip. But I'm going to miss you over on the NCSU beat. Oh my, did I say a bad word, referencing the ACC? I can actually feel transplants all over the Triangle going apoplectic right now. But forget them - just wanted to say Good luck!
Cheers!
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 15:11 — George Richards (not verified)Welcome to the beat, Chip. Look forward to seeing you and reading your work on the Whalercanes this season.
I'm sure some bean counters see this as a good move, but...
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 14:24 — warrennet... I don't agree from a sports perspective. I have no doubt Chip will put the same effort into this beat as he has done for the ACC. I enjoyed reading his work there often.
This blog has always been a lot of fun, especially this summer with the weekly discussions Luke started. XM 204 is the first place I go for general hockey news. TSN.ca/nhl second. I'm always impressed with the work Luke has done because of how often his articles are referenced. Oh, and for local hockey news, this blog is a daily stop.
From a diehard Cane's and Wolfpack fan, best of luck Chip!
Here's an idea....
Sun, 08/17/2008 - 13:55 — Socalgirl828Now that you've taken over for Luke and you'll be the Canes beatwriter, try not to talk or reference your past gig. Canes fans already have to hear about how this is ACC country and hockey takes a backseat to (insert team here) and blah, blah, blah, so I think we've all got that. You're the Canes beatwriter now and the shoes you reference in your post are completely hard to fill. It almost feel like the N&O has decided to go completely backward in bringing in someone who just admitted he's not a hockey guy; Luke's hockey knowledge is superior to most in the league, and his Canes knowledge is second to none. While I didn't always agree with his slant on things, he did an excellent job over the years so this news and 'change' is extremely disappointing. I guess this falls in line with all the cuts that are being made with this newspaper- although it makes zero sense to bring a newbie into the mix , so I guess eventually we'll have the beatwriter in Charlotte since it appears the sports page is now so heavily Charlotte-centric.
Luke took this blog to a new level, and in the middle of the summer at that; it's now a point of reference in the national hockey media, like TSN & Home Ice XM 204 So you'll have alot of fans expecting the same level of posting and detailed information on all things Canes.
Hey now
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 07:45 — aprince27What about us hockey fans who are also ACC diehards. People who follow both strongly do exist in this area., and there are plenty of them.
Some hockey fans here get so sensitive and insecure on these things.
And what about those hockey
Mon, 08/18/2008 - 11:46 — macsmomAnd what about those hockey fans who could careless about the ACC. This is the CANES blog, a Hockey blog. If I want to read about State or Carolina or Duke, guess what, I'd go to the ACC area. When I come to this blog I want to read about the Canes not the ACC. In my mind there is only one team that bleeds red/black and that's the Hurricanes.
sorry for all you State fans out there ;)

Mon, 08/18/2008 - 12:52 — aprince27Macsmom,
All he did was bring up his experience with State and his interaction with them over the years. It was analogy and what he hopes to do with Canes fan.
