TSN's Darren Dreger is reporting that Dave Lewis will be joining the Canes' coaching staff as an assistant coach and will handle the defensemen.
Lewis, 57, was a defenseman for the New York Islanders, LA Kings, New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings during his playing career. After retiring, he was an assistant coach for the Wings as they won Stanley Cups in 1997, '98 and 2002, then replaced Scotty Bowman as head coach of the Wings after Bowman's retirement in 2002.
Lewis was not retained by the Wings after the 2004-2005 lockout season and served as a scout for the team. He later was head coach of the Boston Bruins in the 2006-2007season, then an assistant coach for the Kings.
Canes general manager Jim Rutherford has expressed an interest since this past season ended in hiring a former NHL defenseman with coaching experience. Tom Rowe has served as the Canes' defensive coach.
