It will be Michael Leighton in goal on Wednesday night when the Canes face the Washington Capitals, coach Peter Laviolette said today.
Cam Ward was in goal last week when the Caps rallied for a 3-2 win, and also started Sunday in the 5-2 loss to Atlanta. Leighton was the winner in the Canes' 2-1 victory Friday over Ottawa.
The Canes were on the ice this morning at the RBC Center for a team practice. The lines:
Ryan Bayda-Rod Brind'Amour-Chad LaRose
Ray Whitney-Eric Staal-Tuomo Ruutu
Sergei Samsonov-Matt Cullen-Scott Walker
Wade Brookbank-Brandon Sutter-Dwight Helminen
Defenseman Joni Pitkanen also is at practice.
The Canes are putting in some power-play work. One unit has Cullen and Joe Corvo working at the point, with Whitney, Staal and Ruutu. The other has Pitkanen and Seidenberg working at the point with Samsonov, Brind'Amour and Bayda.

just thinking..
Wed, 11/12/2008 - 09:06 — TarHeelFan05i was thinking...
Maybe if our goaltending tonight is good...
Maybe if our team decides to play a full 60 mins...
Maybe if our Power Play and PK do good..
And Maybe, just maybe! if we score more goals than the other team...
WE WILL WIN!

Not just a Ward Fan
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 19:13 — ward30I never stated that I thought Cam played consistently all last year. What I did stat was that I thought over the past 4 games up until Sunday that he had more than 30 shots and that over a whole he has improved each year. If Leights plays tomorrow good luck to him - the team needs to win. However, I have read the paper and have listened to post game comments / quotes - has anyone noticed that Laviolette praises all other goalies for their good work and doesn't play them for losses when they may have been the reason we lost - Graham and Leights (in the past) but is always quick to blame Cam and never praise him in the media???? Wonder how that builds a team players confidence. Good luck to Leights tomorrow and I truly hope we aren't ruining everything that Cam is working towards by doing what most fans think is"sending a message". Your right it is sending a message but what message is it sending.

Starting Leighton
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 17:42 — abramsdougI agree with the decision to start Leighton. I realize Leighton has not proven he can be a #1 goalie. I also agree that long-term Ward has the support of the Hurricanes management to be the #1 goalie. I also agree that Cam Ward has shown he can be brilliant. In my view Ward's inconsistent play has been detrimental to the team as a whole. I think it is difficult for the team to keep up its energy with a goalie who misses soft shots, even if he can also make spectacular plays. Fundamentally, more games are lost when simple mistakes are made than are won by great plays. I think Ward needs to understand that his first job is to stop the soft shots and to be consistent in his play. I also think Laviolette is sending an important message to Ward in particular and the team in general; and to me the message is play hard and play smart or watch the game while others play.
great comment
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 17:51 — GoShelfI think you're balls on - these guys paid a lot of money to perform.
goalies
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 17:27 — greg_98Cam has not played well of late ,he gave up soft goals against washington on thursday and sunday kinda speaks for itself.. you can be a cam ward fan all you like but Im a canes fan, lavi is the man ...doubt him if you want, I dont
Next year Laviolette will be gone...
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 17:08 — canescupLook nobody can expect Cam to be at the top of his game when Lavi doesnt let him play more than one game in a row. Cam is the #1 goalie but soon Leighton who is #2 (and always will be) will have played as many games. Its simple, Lavi changes his lines as much as the goalies, no one can get used to playing with anyone. This flip flop coaching is'nt going to get us to the playoffs, and we all know he will be gone if that happens (injuries or not).
Goalie Rotation
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 17:06 — GoShelfMost of the comments in here have over exaggerated the point. Most of the teams in the NHL are using some sort of goalie rotation - even Luongo has watched a couple of games this year. It's pretty simple: Ward has struggled at times and Leighton's looked solid. At least this year we have a backup that get wins.
As long as we are winning, I don't particularily care who's in net and based on results so far Leighton gives us the best chance tomorrow. I'm not throwing Ward under the bus because with the exception of Sunday he's played extremely well, but with 2 goalies playing well, you have to go with the guy that gets wins. We don't have the time to let Ward find his form - every game matters (remember last year, can't take off nights, it's too costly).
good move
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 16:55 — vdotuthis is a good move. I think Leighton is more consistent than ward..
I think it is a Mistake but still hope the Canes win!
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 16:07 — Richie7I would prefer Ward as I think that he is our #1 and for that reason should be playing in this game. That having been said I hope the Canes win. I have watched almost every game and do not understand this but it seems like the team plays more consistently well in front of Leighton. Maybe it is because they are more focussed since he is our back-up and they feel the need to be on top of their game? This is not an attempt to knock Leighton who I think has played well but it is merely my observation.
Also we need to start playing D in front of our net like teams play us. Staal is not allowed by other teams to skate right in to a the slot and take a shot unless he is willing to get knocked on his A$$ either before, during or after the shot is taken. We need to have that same mentality, exact a price for coming in there...and yes sometimes it will have to be after the whistle but that is what other teams do to us so why do we not do the same???
ward
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 15:52 — dbhenrygood move, go with the hot hand...quit making excuses for Ward...he's a professional and he plays his best when he's got competition, and quit blaming Ward's losses on the whole team, that same "terrible" team plays in front of Leighton. Ward will bounce back and reclaim number one but you got to sit him when we lets in the goals he did against EDM and WSH at ridiculously crucial times...
Yes Really
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 15:25 — Canes101I am a huge canes fan and always have been. I think that a loss will show everyone that Leighton is not our number goalie nor should he be. And sure I can blame Laviolette for this. How do you not back your goalie? If some of the other #1 goalies in hockey start off 4 and 4 do you see their coaches starting the back up goalies on a consistent basis and sending a bad message to their #1? I just dont like it for the organization's future!
And as far as this past game against Atlanta, were you actually at that game? Do you REALLY think that was Wards fault or do you think the WHOLE team played terrible?
Laviolette did support Ward
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 15:55 — CanarseLaviolette did support Ward by starting him on Sunday after his performance in Washington. Leighton played well on Friday and Laviolette could have stuck with him. I didn't see the game on Sunday, but the statistics were pretty bad.
You forgive Ward's game Sunday because the team played poorly. That's fine, but you rip Leighton for losing in Pittsburgh where the team played what is considered their worst game of the year.
This is the NHL. Unless your name is Brodeur or Luongo you don't have the privledge of playing poorly. Other young goalies such as DiPietro and Fleury have taken a seat when they have struggled. If Ward's confidence is that fragile he doesn't have the makeup to be a #1 anyway.
worst game - Sunday - no doubt about it
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 16:11 — Richie7sorry but if you did not see Sunday's game you can not know what was the worst game...yes they had a lot of shots recorded but most were from bad angles or way out with no traffic. Passing was even worse!
Guppyman
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 14:52 — Canes101So you are one that doesnt think he has played well the past couple of seasons? I guess my only question to you is then why did he finish tied for 4th most wins last season? I cant wait to watch Leighton get pummeled tomorrow night. I honestly hope that we lose the game
7-0 just so that people like you shut up about how great Leighton is. The only good team he has played this year he lost the game 4-1.
Really?
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 15:20 — CanarseAre you a Canes fan or just a Ward fan? You and Ward30 would be the only people I've heard that think Ward played consistently well last year. You can't blame Laviolette for shaking Ward's confidence. Blowing 2 games on soft goals and getting lit up during your next start does that all by itself.
I don't think Leighton is all that, but at this point Ward needs to get his head straight and the Canes can't afford a string of losses while he does that.
wardo
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 14:46 — guppyman45yeah, stick with ward..sorta like saying "i think i'll stay with the titanic, yall take the lifeboats". the kid just doesn't have it anymore.
Goalies
Tue, 11/11/2008 - 14:40 — Canes101I think what Laviolette is doing with the goalies is a big mistake. I have thought that from game 1. He has a #1 and to keep pulling him and switching up the rotation is not allowing Ward to get into a groove. Also I think it puts doubts in his mind which we all know is not good for goalies. I would like to see him stick with Ward and let him get into winning the games and back into top form!
