Chad LaRose was among 15 players to file for arbitration Saturday. Dennis Seidenberg, Carolina's other arbitration-eligible restricted free agent, was not.
Hearings are scheduled for July 20-Aug. 4.
What's this mean? Not much for now, because it's mostly administrative. It means if LaRose can't reach a contract agreement before the end of the month, he'll get a contract through arbitration. And it means Seidenberg thinks he has better odds of getting a good deal through negotiation than he does through arbitration.
The Hurricanes have only gone to arbitration once in the past decade, with Jeff O'Neill in 2000.
The deadline for teams to file for arbitration with players is tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Another thing...
Mon, 07/07/2008 - 13:26 — Anthony (not verified)Another thing 99.7% (or more!) of the fans here in Raleigh aren't thinking about, or likely even know, with this issue is actually a good thing for both LaRose and the Hurricanes. Once a player files for arbitration, no other team can tender him an offer sheet. This means he can't receive an offer from another team that the Canes would be forced to either match or decline. This will allow the team & player to negotiate in good faith, without any outside pressure like a ridiculous offer from some other team.
Hold on for a sec
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 22:49 — Shawn (not verified)Wait a minute. I think you guys are reading a little too much into this. This doesn't mean anything except he hasn't signed a deal yet.
I think this is just an insurance policy for Chad. He hasn't reached a contract yet, who knows what offer is on the table...he's just insuring that if contract talks fall off....arbitration will give him a contract.
A lot of players usually file for arbitration, it doesn't mean their team doesn't want them, or is low-balling them. Calm down people.
Also, Seidenberg deciding not to file tells me that he and JR are close to a new contract.

After the All-Star Game
Mon, 07/07/2008 - 09:57 — ldecock (author)Traditionally, the NHL has released the schedule the day after the baseball All-Star Game, which this summer would be July 16.
Usually, though, a few preseason schedules start to trickle out as early as the Stanley Cup finals. None of that this year.
Messing with another fan favorite
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 17:44 — cindee (not verified)What's it gonna take for management to realize that they are getting close to "biting the hand that feeds them??" - First Commodore and Stillman, then Cole and now LaRose. They keep trading all the fan favorites, especially those who do the most with the kids! Do they want to keep the fan base growing in this area? Hockey is still new enough in this area to chase people back to ACC basketball and football if there's no one to cheer for! Rosie should get at minimum what Jeff Hamilton or Tanabe got plus 2 years! He bleeds Hurricanes red!
If the fan base can come
Mon, 07/07/2008 - 11:19 — SubwayScoundrelIf the fan base can come back after sitting Irbe and Frances, I am sure the STH base will live through LaRose moving on. Use to go to the arena and the place was full of Irbe sweaters but you rarely see one now.
I like Larose and he does hustle but he is not a $1M plus player. Fans like him? Yes. Worth a big contract? I don't think so. I would pay him $750 at the most. Jeff Daniels was the Larose of his time (for those who have not been fans for longer than 3 years) and one day they forced him into retirement and got him a coaching jobs.
As much as I know people don't want to hear this but there have been several LaRose's that have come through the Canes org in 10 years.
huh?
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 20:36 — johnnyg (not verified)With all due respect that is the worst argument for keeping a plyer that I have heard.
Cole Commodore and Stillman were all traded not because managment wanted to make the fans mad... but because we had, and did, moss the playoffs 2 years in a row. with the team we have we should have challenged for the cup those 2 years... something had to change. we traded commodore and stillman to fill a major gap in our team, which joe corvo filled nicely. and cole is on the last year of his contract and with that was our only assett as a baragining chip for a decent move to fix the blueline. in the case of both trades we traded the right players available at the time for the best possible fit to help the TEAM.
As far as LaRose, I like him also but he will never be much more than a 4th line energy player and to pay any 4th liner much more than $1mill is insane. While LaRose is a character guy, he is no more than a 4th liner.
I am sorry but if you guys think losing LaRose will diminish our STH base then something is very very wrong.
Plus how many of you know what kind of deal he is being offered and what kind of deal he is asking for to even comment on managment not giving him a fair deal.
Get real people!

It appears he wants to be paid 3rd-line money. But on the Canes, he's going to be a 4th-line player unless the team has many injuries again. That's the problem, folks. JR doesn't want to spend 3rd-line money on a player who will see action on the 4th line -- even if the player is good enough to play on the 3rd line of some teams.
Rosie
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 11:11 — s2lrbarnDoes he have to do something like, say, refuse to report to Albany to get a good contract? Rosie is a fan's player. He knows how cool (and rare) it is to have the opportunity to play in the NHL and he's not afraid to show it.
crowd favorite too
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 09:10 — wjcampThere aren't enough players who can get the crowd fired up like Rosie. As a long time STH who seldom misses a game, I can tell you that Larose's hustle and enthusiasm make him one of the top fan favorites...and he's turning into a damn fine third/fourth line player. He's versatile, always gives 110% and never backs down from anybody. And he's is one of the kids' favorites, and that's what this franchise needs to build a strong STH base ten years down the road and more. If they can find a way to pay Graham 1.8M and Kabs 2.2M, then there's got to be at least 900K worth investing in Larose. After all, didn't they give Tanabe at least that much after a whole lot less dedication and results?
chad
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 08:46 — Chadfan (not verified)Chad has only proved his critics wrong throughout his whole career. Too small? Does Martin St. Louis ring a bell. Not that he is at St. louis talent level yet, but he has the same work ethic to prove his critics wrong. Larose has only gotten better with age and I think it will come back to haunt the Canes if they don't sign him.
Character player
Sun, 07/06/2008 - 00:55 — caneshockeyfanThis reminds of what I think was the biggest front office mistake of the past few seasons: letting Aaron Ward go. Ward was a solid D-man and a character guy. Maybe not a highly sought-after, top-tier guy (well, maybe he is now, which just reinforces my point), but the kind of guy that makes your team better by playing hard and putting it on the line every night. The fact that he worked hard to improve the offensive side of his game during the lockout spoke volumes about his character as a person and player. But I digress. We're talking about LaRose here. The thing is, I think you can say a lot of the same kinds of things about LaRose as you can about A. Ward. He's a character guy that gives you everything every night. And his game is on the upswing. He's improved by leaps and bounds over the past couple of seasons. He stepped up to the 2nd line for a bit last season and had a couple multi-point games. That was not a fluke; this kid's a good player. The front office is making a mistake by jerking him around like this.
We need to keep Chad for
Sat, 07/05/2008 - 23:39 — Anonymous (not verified)We need to keep Chad for sure. Can't imagine that he's asking for something outrageous. He is worth more than his stats suggest, & his stats are actually pretty good when he's gotten a real chance. History says that injuries are inevitable, & he's an excellent option to have in those cases.
The issue with LaRose is
Sat, 07/05/2008 - 21:16 — Anonymous (not verified)The issue with LaRose is likely that he wants more than he's worth. It can't be length that's the problem because arbitrators only award 1 year deals. He wouldn't file if he wanted more years so it has to be the money. I believe the team can also request a 2 year deal but I'm not sure about that. He likely won't be awarded what he's looking for as awards are mostly based on point production. They'll look at what other guys with similar totals are getting paid so he's likely to get what he's worth. If it's too much we walk away. It's more likely he's signed before the hearing, though.
Chad LaRose
Sat, 07/05/2008 - 19:04 — steve henderson (not verified)Man what a bunch of head games the front office is playing with Rosie...I realize also that the Canes Front office could have sent Rosie to Albany too ( couldn't they ?) ...but man...if the shaft him...by letting him go it just goes to prove that Rosie while not a superstar like Staal, but you'd think the front office would be a wee bit more appreciative of his efforts...but I'm just fan...what would i know ?
They need to quit messing
Sat, 07/05/2008 - 18:49 — Anthony (not verified)They need to quit messing around with Chad and give him a fair contract. He's asking for more than one year, give it to him. He's the hardest working kid on the team!!
Chad
Sat, 07/05/2008 - 18:42 — Anonymous (not verified)Sure hope we can work something out with LaRose-- he's a great player and if what he did the last week of the season continues, we'll want him in Canes Red for sure.
Seidenberg
Sat, 07/05/2008 - 18:32 — Vincent Vega (not verified)I think Seidenberg is actually *afraid* he could get a better deal through arbitration. But he knows that if he gets too good a deal, the Canes will walk away and he'll be a UFA with few suitors.
